Forren set for Everton medical
David Moyes has watched the defender play for Norwegian champions Molde and reportedly met with his manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week about the possibility of signing the 24 year-old.
Talks were deemed to be at an advanced enough stage for Molde to allow their player of the year to travel to England and hopefully put the finishing touches on his move to Goodison Park when the window opens.
The obligatory YouTube highlight reel:
If Forren is to arrive in the New Year, it could spur the departure of John Heitinga around whom speculation is swirling concerning a possible move to Ajax. "A done deal," according to the usual "in the know" chatter.
Heitinga recently won back the first-choice berth in central defence in which he won the club's Player of the Season accolade last season, but that followed a few games of watching from the bench and he respectfully aired his frustrations on Twitter.

On paper, looks a good buy.

But if we had to fund the move for Forren then I think letting Heitinga go would be the sensible option.

Based on YouTube, he does appear to read the game well but would have some work to do to cut it with the pace and physicality of the Prem.
I think he would have to do a lot of work with Distin and Weir before he is ready for first team duties so IMO he is not ready to replace JH yet.

He's exactly what we're missing. :D

One point though: I'm just wondering why the club bothers its arse over having a youth academy... I just cannot fathom the waste of staff/youth wages when it's in-your-face obvious that none of them will ever ever come through to the first team. Because of, on the one hand, Moyes's reticence and paranoia of feeding them into the first team, in case they....
A. Displace a favourite;
B. Make nail-biting knife-through-the-heart of the game mistakes; or
C. Ask for a bloody wage rise... à la 'Oliver' (or Baxter!)
Baffling really?....Not.

That is the only way forward for a team on a small budget imo.
414 Posted 27/11/2012 at 07:25:19
£25+ million Rooney
£12 million Rodwell
I think that about covers it.
416 Posted 27/11/2012 at 07:27:46
Certainly looks comfortable on the ball though might give us a few heart in mouth moments as he tries to dribble round ratface in our own penalty box?
I would be happier if he came across more of a young Vidic, a really strong physical man mountain of a centre back who can dominate in the air but am prepared to give this lad the benefit of the doubt if he's coming to join.
417 Posted 27/11/2012 at 08:15:37
No harm having more quality on the books but it's glaringly obvious we need more in midfield, and what's becoming more apparent to me as time goes by is that we need a better keeper than Tim Howard. Too many mistakes, and making good saves after cocking up doesn't make up for letting in a howler! Only scoring makes up for it!
418 Posted 27/11/2012 at 08:29:37
I think any prem striker watching that will just learn to stand off him a yard and wait to receive the ball.
420 Posted 27/11/2012 at 08:59:06
Duffy I feel is a big strong lad who can win balls, win headers, but his distribution is woeful and I'm sure that's what has held him back.
422 Posted 27/11/2012 at 09:19:03
He's the bald one in the centre of defense right?? The one that won 'Fans Player of the Season' last year? The same fella that was at the heart of the Dutch defense when they went all the way to the World Cup Final?
I, for one, would rather not lose him and replace him with a fella I've never heard of from the Norwegian league.
Distin, however, is getting old and wont be around much longer......

That is the most spot-on observation of JH I've seen on ToffeeWeb.
426 Posted 27/11/2012 at 09:31:52
I can remember too many times when he has been beaten in the air or on the ground and lost his man for a goal, Norwich being the last crucial example.
He's not exactly a liability but neither does he fill me with confidence. If we were offered £5m or more for him I think we might be able to find a better replacement. Maybe Forren?
427 Posted 27/11/2012 at 09:40:55
I'm glad Moyes is addressing the position though, and I wouldn't mind if we sold Heitinga too, he just isn't value for money right now. One of the highest earners and lowest performers, get rid whilst we can still make our money back on him.
429 Posted 27/11/2012 at 09:46:06
Did I read Hangeland at Fulham is on a free at the end of the season? Now that would be a quality signing

We could have Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer lining up at Centre Half and Gordon Banks in goal but if we don't sort out basic marking and communication issues we will still ship goals from set pieces. With Stubbs, Weir and Moyes being all ex-defenders it is baffling that we struggle on the basics in so many games. All our centre halves have shown excellent abilities to deal with set-pieces – even Heitinga. He is good at positioning and disturbing the opposition when balls are flighted in.
The most infuriating brain fart Moyes and the coaching team had this season was in the derby, where we looked like we would concede every time there was a corner. Whoever was responsible did not do a proper job that week of preparing the players.

I can see JH leaving in the transfer window and the need for a Central Defender increasing, so probably a lot of truth in this.

I thought he looks okay, he certainly doesn't look slow, his touch does look slightly heavy at times, but then some of his passing looks good. He's also pretty tall and likely to fill out over the next few years.
It's important to note that this is not a best of video, it's his highlights from two games. Also, it should be noted that the quality of the opposition is going to be a big leap for him.

Duffy to me is around the same level as this guy, only problem is Forren is playing in the Europa League and for Norway while Duffy is not getting any playing time at all. With our defence being so poor at the moment I cannot understand why Moyes does not play Duffy. Surely he showed he can take it last season.
By the way, if Moyes is not planning on playing Barkley then why take him away from Sheffield Wed??? Duffy too could be out on loan in the Championship right now, instead he is rotting away at U-21 level.
Moyes and his handling of our young players make me angry, he needs to get some balls and play the likes of Barkley or Barkley will leave to get playing time somewhere else!
