The Rumour Mill

Jelavic rift could prompt his exit

27/11/2012 | Comments (56)
An explanation for Nikica Jelavic's poor form has come in the form of a claim by the Daily Express that the Croatian striker "lambasted" his teammate Kevin Mirallas for being selfish during the Merseyside derby against Liverpool last month.

The report suggests that Jelavic has clashed with Mirallas before — it doesn't say when and offers no other supporting evidence for the claims — but this supposed rift between the Croatian and the Belgian was apparently raised on a City Talk discussion forum last week.

The paper also claims that Jelavic could hand in a transfer request and that Arsenal would be interested in signing him.

Greg O'Keeffe of the Liverpool Echo, meanwhile, claimed on Twitter earlier today that the story was untrue.

Indeed, the raising of the Arsenal angle makes this look like a cheap attempt to unsettle a player who, despite a recent dip in form, has been a huge success since arriving from Rangers in January.

I have noticed, and I have read other Toffeewebbers comment, a dip in form from Jelavic. This article appears to shed light on what the problem is.

I have no idea if there is the slightest truth in it. If there is a problem, I would hope it can be overcome for the good of the team. Surely they can be professional?

Maybe he should man-up. Maybe stop him hitting the deck so often.

I prefer my wingers to be selfish, they don't really work any other way.

Haha! The one 'quote' they have is the journalist's own words.

Jelavić has dipped in form, I'm afraid that happens to all goal scorers. I doubt very much that there is anything in this.

This got mentioned Thursday on City Talk's blue room show.

I think Mirallas is getting in and around Jelavic's areas and not passing to him. Surely two players of their quality can work together and click.

Is this yet another excuse for a big-time player to pack his bags and collect a large wad in the process.

Well looks like we'll have to sell half our team: Baines, Fellaini, Howard, Jelavic... anyone else want to leave when David Moyes goes?

No wonder Arsene Wenger doesn't think Everton can be a big club!

We can read a lot into what is rumour, but can't help thinking this is so unlikely that it may in fact, have substance. Where would you come up with such a story otherwise?

Mirallas often tends to look to shoot even spending up a lot of energy to get into a shooting position rather than look for the killer pass, but FFS. Grow up on this!

Jelly looked pumped up enough with his goal v Sunderland; but v Norwich, he was not even attacking the spaces where he coulda got a goal.

Fellaini I think was pushed by the club's PR team to put a dampener on the rumours of his leaving as the press decided they saw legs in how to intemperate his comments. Jelavic will surely take to twitter soon enough!

Doesn't sound too good, but hopefully it's nothing. I'm going to agree with the post by Nick 455 though.

Strikers these days do tend to sulk if things aren't going their way. You only have to look at Fernando Torres. I think the case could be the same with Jelavic. He's going through a sulking stage. A similar thing has happened with Papis Cisse at Newcastle.

I am a firm believer though that if you put the ball in the right areas for Jelavic, he'll score. At the moment, we're not doing that. But the same also applies to him as well, he needs to get in those positions and I think he has become a bit lazy. A typical example was last weekend when Baines was having ago for not moving. Baines is not one to lose his aggro and there did appear to be a bit of tension between both. Maybe his form has dipped due to break down in relationships with certain players, I hope not.

What a load of bollocks!!

If it is true then i'd be glad to see him go, we don't need such childish crap at everton!! Especially when you consider what they're being paid!!
Can you imagine him putting in his transfer request:

NJ: "... hi boss I'm here to hand in a transfer request"

DM: "Why jelly? whats making you so unhappy?"

NJ: "It's Kevin! He doesn't pass to me and its making me sad"

DM: "Grow the F**k up!!"

Think it's bollocks myself as he wouldn't have the excuse of Mirallas putting him off against Norwich as he wasn't even there.

I said to my mate at the Norwich game that Jelavic has gone a bit 'Yakubu' on us. He came in, worked hard, got into good positions and banged the goals in. Now it just seems like he wants to do the latter without the former(s). I hope it is just a blip and we know strikers are a funny lot when the goals aren't going in.

As for Mirallas, I'm glad we have finally got someone who sometimes thinks "I'm going alone". Moyes will reign him in if it gets too much but I've liked what I have seen so far, and can't think of many occasions where I've thought "Pass it, for Christ's sake!"

So what if this is true, top players are greedy and think they're the best, for too long we've had a nice happy stable club with too many slapping each other on the back for mediocrity and being the best of friends. I don't care if they all hate each other as long as they're winning.

Top players respect other top players regardless of what happens on the pitch, if they had a flare up then fine but if they are really two top players they wouldn't let it affect their performances and would respect the value of the other on the pitch. If Jelavic's form is affected by this then he's not the top player we thought he was. Convenient how it's Arsenal interested in him the day before we play them though isn't it?

Mirallas needs to look up more, this was discussed here after a couple of appearances. He's a big asset to us but he should be more aware of what's going on around him.
David Barks
487 Posted 27/11/2012 at 16:12:35
Mirallas has been out for a few matches now and Jelavic has actually gotten worse since then. Mirallas was actually creating good chances, and put good shots on target from outside the box for Jelavic to try to follow up. Jelavic is off his game right now, period.

But this is just getting ridiculous. So the media has us selling our star left back in January, Heitinga in January, our star striker in January, our star midfielder in January. Sure, I can see that happening. We'll sell off the entire team midseason, that's likely to happen, right? Enough of this shit.

I don't think this deserves to be dignified with headline treatment when it just looks like hearsay and rumour-mongering without any tangible evidence to back it up at this point so I've moved it.

Jelavic's poor form is chiefly down to the fact that he isn't getting any service. Granted, his approach play has been sloppy at times, he has had a tendency to take the wrong option and he's missed a couple of good chances.

But if his half-volley against Reading goes in instead of being blocked by Morrison's arm, or that similar chance against Norwich that deflected over then he's a hero and back to his best.

The stuff about Arsenal does sound like utter nonsense as does the fallout between Mirallas and Jelavic, but if there is any shred of truth in there then surely Jelavic is guilty of hubris.

There have been occasions earlier this season when I have thought players such as Naismith and Mirallas should just give the ball to Jelavic in the last third or in the box, but recently I have been less sure as his form has been poor. If he is criticising those around him then hopefully he is being very hard on himself at the same time. He is not in the Lineker or Shearer league yet and he should realise that at the moment he is a very decent striker with room for improvement.

I think we lack a real leader on the pitch, someone who can credibly tell players when they are screwing up. James Martin is right that happy families does not always produce good results

Like most Evertonians, I'm looking forward to the returns of Mirallas and Gibson and hopefully getting back to winning ways, whether there's arguments between players or not.

This story seems a bit over the top, but there is still the possibility that certain players may have to accept an apparently reduced level of importance in order to help the overall team performance.

If it is true that Jelli's ego is threatened by the impact of Kev Mirallas then this is where the manager really earns his money. The bottom line is that results are what matter, not who grabs the headlines, and all need to be convinced that they are employed to be part of a team. In an industry where personal profile and individual glory is so marketable that may be a tricky thing to do.

Dione Dublin was on the radio the other day saying that SAF was brilliant at integrating strong individual personalities into the overall team, which has to be a key skill if some of the maverick players have personalities to match.

Michael Kenrick
497 Posted 27/11/2012 at 16:49:35
My feeling is this one probably has some smoldering embers at least, at the base of the whisps of smoke. The fact that it's been mentioned elsewhere would add to that...

I thought Mirallas was both brilliant and selfish when he finally got playing for us, but he still has a lot of work to do to strike the right balance. Funny how we loved to see Coleman go head down and running at the defence, but if anything Mirallas overeggs it too often, failing to make the pass and running into the brick wall.

And just watching Jelavic's body language and positioning in recent games, it does fit with something not being right. Something more than lack of service.

Interesting this. We obviously bought Naismith because he worked well with Jelavic. Was he recommended by Jelavic himself?

It's one of those situations whereby it's difficult to comment without inside knowledge...

Mike Oates
500 Posted 27/11/2012 at 17:00:50
One problem we now have is that Mirallas's preferred position is wide left, and cutting in to shoot — what it means is that we have lost the best wing partnership (as said by all decent pundits) in the Baines/Pienaar link. It was also this link which basically helped feed Jelavic last season.

In saying that, the odd occasion Mirallas and Coleman have teamed up on the right it has worked wonders — Fulham, Southampton — but Moyes does seem to want to put Mirallas out wide left, and Jelavic suffers.

502 Posted 27/11/2012 at 17:10:30
Are we sure about this? Jelavic hasn't looked right since he whacked his knee on the post against Newcastle. And Mirallas hasn't been in the team the last few games, so he has bugger all to get stroppy about! — i.e. there are possible other explanations for a dip in form...
Michael Kenrick
505 Posted 27/11/2012 at 17:11:43
I thought someone mentioned recently that Mirallas previously played/plays a more central forward role (for Olympiakos / Belgium) — his only Premier League goal was from a perfect central position — in which case, that could add some friction, perhaps?

The pessimism is starting to creep in, especially with the media catching on to that. I just think it's a load of bollocks to be fair, they are grown adults playing football, all players have dips in form where they struggle. Last couple of games we've missed a lot of flair because of injuries so it's not wonder that Jelavic is struggling to score.

My belief is that if we play well against Arsenal and Jelavic scores then his confidence will soar.

It's just all mind games from various 'sources' who want to unnerve the club, team, fans etc. Remember when we were in good form beating teams with ease at the start of the season? The media were praising us from every corner, now that we are in bad form (but still 5th I might add) they are coming up with Baines to Man Utd, Heitinga out, Jelavic leaving because Mirallas won't pass.

Don't worry; when we start getting results, these things will disappear again. I don't read into it at all, and I only concentrate on the positives.

Jeremy Benson
510 Posted 27/11/2012 at 17:21:09
I wouldn't normally read anything into these kind of things. But I am not a fan of strikers who prefer to play with certain other forwards. On the one hand, they may genuinely have a "connection" with another player and it might be a formidable partnership. On the other, they may just like it because they are top dog.

It's a bit like formula one teams I guess — some go down the route of having a Number 1 driver and the second is clearly, well... second, and the other teams who prefer to have two drivers fighting it out. I prefer the latter myself...

Let's say this baloney is actually true and Jelly wants out in Jan. Can we afford for him to remain at the club and sulk/maintain his current form?? If not, we need someone in to replace him, but who??

I'm prepared for pelters but maybe Darren Bent could be worth a punt. Frozen out at Villa, so he should be reasonably priced and you'd hope had a point to prove which could result in a similar sort of scoring record Jelly gave us last season. Or maybe old candle-wax face could get a game.

Mirallas is flavour of the month at present but so was Heitinga not long ago.

I think he is an exciting player but the way he plays has certainly upset the balance up front. It's not just Jelavic — look at Pienaar.

Reads like drivel designed to fill up space in the absence of nothing substantial to write.

Mirallas missed the last two fixtures and Jelavic was unlucky not to score in both. He is an out-of-form good player. Confidence will return when he scores. I guess this will happen when the midfield is back to full strength or something approaching it.

Bjørn-Ivar Pedersen
527 Posted 27/11/2012 at 18:07:08
I have stated before that Mirallas is a selfish bastard, he has blown chances when other players have stood for open goal and onside just waiting for the pass. He lack a lot of vision for the game... and he needs to learn to work as a team player.

And what the heck has he to do on the left wing? But that is DM's fault... he is slowing the game down when he needs to stop and turn the ball to his right foot before he can pass... in the meantime, all our players have been marked out.

No, put him back on the right wing and leave Pienaar as servant for them two in the middle, he knows how it is done, and luckily I saw Oviedo has the same qualities...

So why Moyes is using Mirallas on the left is still puzzling me... but it seem like a sabotage of EFC's chances to get the fourth spot.

So the merry-go-round will begin again in January. Let's see Torres back to Spain, Suarez to Chelsea, Jelly to the Arsenal, Bent to Liverpool on loan, Andy Carroll returns to Newcastle and we'll end up with Demba Ba whose mysterious injury will flare up again after one-half of football.

Baines to United, Cole to PSG, Lescott to Chelsea and Bale to Barca.

Champions League... We're having a laugh... (refrain until boredom sets in).

Mirallas does need to take the blinkers off and build more awareness/execute around him, but others could fall into that category.

He is prepared to have a dig which has been an Everton failing for years, although getting stuff on target is the new Everton issue.

Oliver Molloy
544 Posted 27/11/2012 at 18:31:48
There have been occasions when Mirallas should have passed the ball to Jelavic and others, but he is a new player to the team and the league and is very keen to make a big impression, anyone can see that.

Jelavic seems to be one those players who needs a hand on his shoulder, other than take a bollocking.

Once again, it is up to the manager to find a way of making it work, and we all know Moyes's record is up there with the best... when it comes to destroying strikers.

Jelavic to bang in a couple tomorrow night then!

Some team mates don't like each other – shock! I'll let you into a secret, there's someone I work with who I fucking detest – and he's an Evertonian!! But just like the probably hundreds of footballers out there who don't like some of the squad, I probably won't ask for a transfer just yet. Yet another twatter/tabloid piece if tittle tattle.

Bollocks. More concern for me is Moyes. Here's some tips (wait for the blah blah 3 league managers' awards and shoestring budget):

1. Play your in-form and best centre-half at centre-half.
2. Play Baines and Pienaar on left. Do not swap Pienaar over.
3. Do not play Neville in midfield.
4. Don't cut your nose to spite your face.
5. When it looks like the opposition are likely to score and you're in the 2nd half and have 3 substitutions left, make changes.

Revolutionary advice.

Anyone else think that in the two games Neville has been missing that we've been terrible?

Gibson > Neville > Hitzlsperger.

Effortlessly brushing aside Man Utd and Villa > Playing great deserving to win most but giving away soft points > Not even playing that well, can't defend anymore.

I can see there might be some tension between the two players. Yes, Mirallas doesn't pass to Jelavic in some areas, but we have to remember he's vying for Jelavic's job. Mirallas was a striker back in Greece and now he's been made a winger.

For the Arsenal game we should really mix things up. If Jelavic is having another off game, put Mirallas up front for 20-30 minutes. Could show Jelavic that his role isn't a given every week and Mirallas gets some time in his preferred position.

I think the story is bollocks. The only thing you notice about strikers is when they are scoring goals, it doesn't matter how hard they work. If they aren't scoring then everyone thinks something is wrong.

At the moment, Jelavic isn't scoring as regularly as he was but it's only been two games since he last scored and he will score the winner against Arsenal, City and Spurs so I don't know what the problem is?
Matt Traynor
668 Posted 28/11/2012 at 11:24:35
The Arsenal link has to be bollocks. Podolski and Walcott are crying about not being played centrally in preference to Giroud, so how would adding another striker to what he's got add anything? Every man and his dog knows Arsenal's defence is the problem.

That said, I've noticed since his debut that Mirallas is greedy. Despite what Nick says, wingers are there to create chances for others and score, and Mirallas will always try to score before he passes.

I remember when we signed him some Rangers fans said he'd be an 18-monther, though they never hinted at any problem with him per se, more that we'd be a stepping stone to a CL club.

Moyes and strikers – it never lasts eh? Maybe Ossie or Hibbo should retrain as a striker – solve that problem.
