Moyes laughs off mistaken Anichebe report
After Nigerian football writer Colin Udoh Tweeted that Reading have made a bid for Everton's Victor Anichebe, "one that's been accepted, it seems," David Moyes rejected the suggestion following tonight's FA Cup win at Cheltenham.
It turns out Mr Udoh meant ex-Everton Academy player Hope Akpan and not Big Vic.
Anichebe has made an impressive return to the Everton side in recent games after recovering from a hamstring strain and, after scoring the winner at Newcastle last week, he laid on two of the Blues' goals at Cheltenham this evening in fine style.

I did hear a rumour a couple of months ago from a so called "ITK" source, that a bid anywhere around Everton's current valuation for Victor would be accepted. Since then, however, he's been playing quite well, so it will be interesting to see if this is true or not.

If we get good money then let him go; still too lazy and buy someone else...
Someone who I would drive to sell is Magaye Gueye he does nothing to show me he is any sort of Premier League standard.

There's no way he's going anywhere... we need the bodies bigtime. He's been very effective for us lately so I'm hoping he stays. Loan out Vellios and give him experience and draft in an experienced striker on loan till the summer, if possible.

Anichibe is fully fit, and by that I mean match fit, sharp, for the first time in years. You cannot progress as a footballer if you are constantly injured or unfit. Especially the way he is built.
The key is staying fit and If he does can be a very, very handy squad player for us, providing much needed depth wide and up top.

To be fair to him, since he dropped the attitude he has looked like the Big Vic from the UEFA all those years ago...

Sell him quick while there is some hype and before he gets injured again. He is a squad player at best who spends most of his time injured. If we could get a couple of million Moyes will find a more useful player.

He's playing as well, indeed better, than he's ever done. He has all the attributes we need, pace, strength and has an eye for goal, He can play up front on his own or with Jelly and does a job in midfield when asked to. Remember his goal against Newcastle at home?
His biggest obstacle is his lack of self belief and it looks like he may finally be realising that's his problem.
After all the time and money we've invested in him it would be madness to let him go now, at a time when he just might be starting to repay the faith. This may be his make or break season but we surely must give him the opportunity.
Moyesy clearly rates him; over to you, Victor!

Agree with Kris (#178) and Derek (#185). People want a clear out when we can't guarantee we would replace those players with better.
Watching tonight's game again. Anichebe has been one of our stand-out players in the first half, and from what I remember of the second-half, he must have been close to MotM. Okay the opposition is limited, but he is working hard and showing a lot more desire and quality. Stupid to be turfing players like this out now, unless better replacements are assured.

After he spoke to ESPN on air, Moyes spoke to the press in the tunnel. He instantly laughed off the Anichebe rumour and reaffirmed his earlier stance – he doesn't intend to sell anyone in this window.
Osman spoke well after the match. In summary, he said it's the best Everton side he's played in, avoiding injuries could be key whilst adding that the team are looking to push on after a decent start.

If Daniel Sturridge is worth £12 million then Victor is worth the same. But, of course, he never will be because he's not playing for England and nobody as stupid as the RS would ever pay that amount.
I'd rather he stayed. Fact is, if we could get double figures from him this season, he is a success.
Go on Big Vic - prove the doubters wrong!

@ Ben Jones
It's not like we all disliked him. Unfortunately he had his critics and wasn't doing much to help his fans come out and defend him. Harking back to 2007/08 was becoming tenuous.
That said, the abuse he has been getting and now Naismith is not on.

Ben (#205) - are you amazed because some of us are really quite pleased when a player comes good, rather than simply wanting them to fail because of past disappointment.
I am astounded that some people have nothing good to say about certain players and seem to delight when they 'don't live up to the hype'. We have far too little resources to accommodate failures and I will continue to be happy when someone performs at the level we require, no matter how long it has taken them to get there.

Matt Traynor, what I'm saying is, a little over a week ago I thought he was nothing but a wage we didn't need to spend. A free transfer or nominal fee would have done for me as 25k off the wage bill every week would have been reward enough. Since he's played an extended (for him anyway) role in the last few games, that opinion has changed, as I think he is maybe showing that he can actually play football. So, yes, £3m+ is probably about right. Maybe by the summer he'll be a hot prospect, fetching close to £5m...

Andrew James, just a question, and hopefully it doesn't sound like a loaded one, but is the collective opinion that Sturridge and Vic should be worth about the same? For me, I don't think so, but I really only know what I know about the former from stats and match reports. I've probably only watched him play half a dozen times. In any case, I'd be surprised to see Vic fetch over £10m

If he becomes a hot prospect Roman, why would we want to sell him? Realistically, what sort of striker would even £5 million bring in today's market (and probably on more than £25k per week as well)?
Why are people obsessed with getting shut of players when our squad is paper thin? The two ways we will survive financially (without a benefactor) is by selling our superstars and getting enough money for 2-3 decent players, and / or by developing young talent to the level were they are properly useful squad players.

Vic deserves 90% of the stick he's recieved...and now I hope he understands why.
He's not a Marcus Bent - a player with limited talent who gives 100% every week.
He's a player with a good deal of talent who gives 10% each week. The abuse he gets is 'Try harder' and 'stop falling over'. The lad is a powerhouse on the training field and now, FINALLY, on a match day. You can see already how a few good games has the fans back on his side. Good on you, Vic, keep working hard.

Last night he stopped at about 85 minutes and sulked out on the right as it was not happening for him. I thought it was the last we had seen of him. Next he is tearing down the left with a lovely set up for Fellaini..... that's more like it.
For me I am afraid I am not yet won over that will take consistent performance and improved commitment. Just maybe?

It was his passes for the Coleman and Fellaini goals last night that impressed me. One off either foot and very precise. He's scoring and making goals at the moment. Can't really ask for more than that.

There is certainly a player in there somewhere. He has got to cut out sitting on his arse & pulling up his socks after he is knocked off the ball — it is infuriating.
He may be destined to be an impact sub for the duration of his career at Everton.

He has proven this season that he he can be a real predator in front of goal. He seems to fail more when he has time to think more about what he is doing and have to make up his mind rather than act instinctively. He is definitely way ahead of Vellios as far as pitch time goes.

Vic's been unlucky with injuries throughout his career so far (something he has in common with a lot of our academy players!). We'd be mad to sell him now he's beginning to realise his potential.

Anichebe's problems were always attitude and application, he's no world beater but when he plays he has value. Remember how Stracq was shite but would literally run himself into the ground, the crowds loved him for that. If Anichebe could do that every week he'd gain even more respect from the fans.

Andrew (#218) – I agree with your view on some fans being unfair to Naismith currently. Whatever standard he may be playing at currently (and he has actually scored a few) – give the guy a break. He's wearing royal blue – let's get behind him rather than undermine the guy. He's coming back from a serious injury, is at a new club and is full of effort. Remember – we're Evertonians – which to me means we're fair minded and get behind our players.

I found reading most of those posts hilarious. His first cross for Coleman was quality, the second for Fellaini was easy. For the rest of the match he ran down blind alleys or looked as if he didn't know what to do with the ball. One good cross against 4th division players and people are going nuts over him.
I agree he looks more determined lately and this has improved his performances but that must be him making a special effort and will soon revert to his natural lazy ways.
Anichebe hasn't enough quality on the ball to play in the top flight, the only attribute I can see is he is big and strong but he only has the desire to use his strength every now and then.

I try not to be too negative on here, but even last night Anichebe looked to me like Bambi on ice, he'd run at people but never seem to have the ball under control. It'll be bouncing in-between his legs and feet like a pinball. He has strength and pace but not much else. People suggesting he's worth £7 mil is just crazy talk.
I'm not saying we should just get rid, but if we were to get £3mil (for example), I'm sure Moyes could find a more natural footballer to take his place.

I just remember the calls from all the ToffeeWebbers saying we should sell him. I remember after the Swansea game, a game in which he played very well, everyone thought he would be a world beater. Then he started the following game, didn't play very well, then its back to square one with him.
Now, he's had a good run of games, and now we're hearing claims that he's worth £7 million, even £12 million!! After what, 5 or 6 good games? How long is it going to be before he's back to square one again?
He needs to have a good run of games all season then he will see how good he is. But the praise he is getting now is ridiculous, just like the criticism of Naismith, its all too over-hyped all the time.

Big Vic or a Chelsea reserve? No contest — Big Vic every time... Sturridge is just a bit-part player. Chelsea have been trying to off-load him for ages. If he was any good, then why didnt Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs or any other good team go for him. Oh, hang on — the RS and Bolton wanted him... Says it all.

Although he has improved over the last few weeks, I don't think he did all that much last night, and the sooner we get rid the better off we will be. If we did get an offer of £3m, snap their hands off and throw in some Green Shield stamps as well. People seem to be getting carried away because we hammered a decent League Two side.

It's not funny Brian (#291) — it is pathetic.
If people cannot be objective and give credit when it is due it shows great immaturity. It is kids who have fixed views, adults who bring perspective to things.
Anichebe was instrumental in three goals, put himself about winning tackles and headers, and still all some people can do is point out that he apparently 'sulked' at the 85-minute mark, or doesn't immediately spring to his feet after some challenges (I certainly saw him go to ground in tackles and get up to play the ball on).
Sure the opposition were limited, but Anichebe was one of our better players and has shown marked improvement in Premier League games as well.

Fantastic player particularly when Everton are away from home, a game changer and a match winner. His post goal celebrations suggest that he has been frustrated and to me demonstrate an element of wanting to be respected and valued by the supporters.
Moyes has gone on record many times and hinted that Victor's biggest problems at times has been 'Victor', and if he can get his psyche right that he has many attributes that he can bring to the game. At 24 he is starting to show what his early promise hinted at, with injuries hopefully behind him, renewed vigour and confidence then hopefully Victor will benefit from increasing game time and Everton are the winner.

Dear Lord (177) — £7 million for Anichebe, not a chance. And — rubs eye to make sure I'm reading this right — Anichebe is pound for pound the player Sturridge is!!!!! What tosh!
Let's have a poll: Anichebe or Sturridge? £7 million!! £2M or £3M if lucky and I would push the button to sell.
He was hopeless and legless in the 1st half yesterday; I remember posting around 38:00 and asking if anyone had seem him touch the ball. Yeah made a couple of goals in the 2nd half, fair dos, nice one. But although I love a nice blue lens, putting VA on a level par with DS... sides splitting.

I cannot change my stance on Victor, sell for whatever we can get! I ask you this. Does Victor get you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of brillance? Or do fall about laughing or shaking your head in disbelief as he fails to control a simple pass, or gets easily knocked off the ball by someone like Leon Brittan or squanders that shot on goal ?

Si Cooper, my tongue was firmly in my cheek with the post you responded to.
When Vic and Vaughan both were new prospects, I thought I liked Vic better, as he was a presence, showed some work rate, and just seemed like a better fit. In contrast, Vaughan always seemed a show pony who was more focussed on reducing his jersey number than on actually playing good football. Vaughan was also injured all the time and Vic kept fit while they were still teenagers. Now though, at nearly 25 years of age, I think Vic has done all the developing he is going to do, and if what we saw against Cheltenham is the result, then £3m would be a reasonable return, albeit disappointing that almost a decade of investment and quite a few million in wages hasn't worked out how we might have wanted.
To the calls that we are paper thin and shouldn't get rid of players: he has been a "young" player for so long that we could bring through another of our youth strikers and push Vellios up to Vic's apparent position of first reserve striker.
