Dick van Dijk next on the list

Defender Dick van Dijk (okay, his real name is Virgil) has claimed that Everton are hoping to strike a deal for his services but a director at his club Groningen insists that they have not received any offers.

"I'm aware of the interest of a few clubs and Everton is one of them", Van Dijk told Voetbal International.

"I hear and read a lot. Soon I have dinner with my agent Henk-Maarten Chin. He will tell me how things are going. I enjoy the interest, but if I leave it must be a good decision when I leave."

Despite the player's claims, Groningen director, Hans Nijland, does not believe the young defender will be leaving the club any time soon, as no official approach has been made.

"I don't expect Virgil will leave. There's not a single club that officially reported so we don't feel like talk about this for too long," he said.

If he's a RB, I'm a bit more interested. Bit disappointed overall to see us linked with all these defenders - get us a midfielder or a forward!

And his cockney accent is terrible!

There, I said it.

I like the sound of him. Ideally, we would team him up with the talented Latvian centre back, Mario Poppinsque.

I have no idea if he is any good or not but another report estimated his value at £1.5m, which is in our price range, especially when reports are saying we bid £4m for Forren and other reports are saying Heitinga is going to Ajax for £4m. This one may have some legs..

He'll be able to SWEEP UP at the back.

[I've capitalised the joke element in case some found it too subtle.]

I see him making up a back four comprising of two brothers from Canterbury - Tim and Tom Chitty - and the noted Cameroon stopper (and ladies man) Romeo Bang-Bang.

And with the mention of puns from Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that, ladies and gentlemen, is where the career references to Dick Van Dijk come to an end...

...unless someone comes up with a Diagnosis Murder pun or a reference to the famous Penis Van Lesbian "joke"

Are we on to anagrams now, Tarty Matron @ 618?

If the above quips are anything to go by he'd be well advised to stay put.

Kev, you're difficult. Best I can come up with is Honk Jevons — good advice to anyone spotting our former striker while driving around Hyde, where he now plys his trade...

Dick van Virgil is a really strange name.

Is he a multi-tasker or does he have a preferred position?

He looks like a decent player, of what info I could find on him. Plays as a central defender, but can play right back. Only 21 years old, got pace, height and a good right foot on him. Be good cover for our defence.

I'm sick and tired of this transfer window already, all the rumours and bull that flies around is doing my head in, we all know that none of theses rumours are true and if and when we do sign or loan someone it will be someone that nobody has heard of or been spoke about.

Its interesting that his Scott Baio says he plays for Groningen.

Best I can do on the Diagnosis Murder front...

I lived in Groningen for eight years in the eighties, saw EFC play a pre season friendly there as well, can't find any record of it on the net and my own memories are h-a-z-y... so if anyone can pinpoint that trip and point me to any web material in relation to it, I'd love to re-live that... this was the time when I had Andy King at our house for Sunday lunch as he was playing in Holland at the time (for Cambuur 84-5 if I remember it well enough), it being at the fag end of his career...

Fucking ace memories, like having the Koeman brothers drinking at my parents pub, and hanging out with ex-EFC trainee Paul Mason who went on from FC Groningen where he was spotted playing in the local amateur leagues. My dad bought him a pair of boots to play in, he ended up later playing for Aberdeen and Ipswich, he now runs a guest house in Southport..... anyway, that has nowt to do with anything!

I just chatted to my friend in Groningen who goes to see FC Groningen (or FC Grunn if you are a local...) and he reckons Virgil is an ace player with potential.... .thinks he'd be a top buy for us.

At Everton we like versatility, and this guy has it all. Accordian, bass drum, cymbals, and harmonica all at the same time.

Brought back!

Who said the joke? Eric Clapton plays guitar and harmonica and everyone says he's a genius. Someone takes a little more effort to strap cymbals to the knees and a drum to the back and he's a pain in the ass.

Enough of this Virgil van Dyke fellow. What about us signing the preposterously named Ricky van Wolfswinkel? Plays for Sporting Lisbon - striker and (at a pinch) Attacking Mid, so he fits the bill in terms of what we need. Imagine the endless hours of fun we could have with that surname!

Of course, in a perfect world, all of the starting XI would have Van in their names: Seamus Colevan, Sylvan Distin, Leon Osvan, Victor Vanichebe - that sort of thing...

Kev, you forgot Nikica Jelavan, Kevan Mirallas, Marouvan Fellaini, and, my personal favourite Apostolos Vanlios.
