French paper claims Fellaini will join Chelsea

10/01/2013 | Comments (29)
According to French football newspaper L'Equipe, Chelsea are on the verge of signing Marouane Fellaini for €27m (~£22m).

The Londoners are the media's front-runners to land Fellaini, either in this transfer window or in the summer, even though the Belgian has insisted that he is happy to stay at Goodison Park for the time being.

And now, with details of an apparent release clause in his contract coming to light in the press, L'Equipe suggest that Chelsea will swoop for Fellaini as Frank Lampard winds down his career at Stamford Bridge.

What price this clause is set at is unclear; David Prentice and colleague Greg O'Keeffe reported/Tweeted earlier today what ToffeeWeb's sources have claimed since he signed his new deal in November 2011 — that the clause is higher than the £22m reported this week and can only be activated by a Champions League club.

Chelsea, of course, are reigning Champions League holders and qualify on a regular basis, but they were eliminated from this season's competition last month.

101GreatGoals.com, who cite the story, claim that L'Equipe have been "spot on" with Chelsea's recent ins and outs, including their acquisition of Eden Hazard and César Azpilicueta. But if Fellaini's release clause is higher than £22m, then their assertion cannot be correct.

So far, none of the major newspapers in England are perpetuating this latest story.

I noticed this extract from the Mirror which is also a dubious newspaper but does quote "sources in Belgium":-

"Fellaini has a buy-out clause in his contract, which Everton insist is higher than the reported £22m and can only be activated by Champions League clubs.

Sources in Belgium last night insisted a January move is unlikely because Fellaini is determined to repay Everton for the faith they have shown in him by helping them clinch a top-four spot.

Moyes also insists he is under no obligation to sell, despite the club’s £9m losses last season.

He said: “There is no pressure to sell (Leighton) Baines or Fellaini, nothing like that.

‘Things can happen quickly, albeit my plans aren’t to sell anybody.”

Didn't Felli claim he would see out his entire contract if Everton so choose?

Am I missing something here because of all the speculation with Chelsea (albeit from them itk) the statement reads:

"Fellaini has a buy-out clause in his contract, which Everton insist is higher than the reported £22m and can only be activated by Champions League clubs"

Chelsea aren't in the Champions League so how can they activate this supposed clause?

Can only happen when the season ends, and that's when CL clubs are confirmed. So it's not going to happen this window.

In this situation is there any advantage for the club not to come out and say "yes his leaving" or "no he isn't" in January?

In my eyes, the chairman and snior management should have decided this already and the speculation becomes nothing but unsettling.

The January transfer window is just a Premier League / Sky / media money spinner that all the clubs have to play to generate cash for media institutions and in turn bump up their tv payments.

Without proper investment we won't be winning this game for very long and stories like this will more often than not be true.

If he goes, so be it. After the Stoke game, I would be happy to bag the fee being quoted and invest in two quality players, central and rightside midfield positions. Rooney, Lescott, Rodwell and Arteta have all gone and the team prospered.

Don't really understand this "can only be activated by a Champion's League club". I mean if any team was willing to pay more than market price, would we say "sorry, no deal cos you're not in the Champions League"?? Say QPR offered 100 million pounds...

Or does this mean Fellaini himself has the final say? How does the clause work?

Marcus, if such a clause exists, then a club in the CL matching the clause amount would be able to speak to Fellaini and Everton would have no choice but to let it happen, it would be down to Fellaini what happens next, be it move or stay. Any other club offering any other amount then Everton would choose to accept or reject the offer.

My worry would be, if he went in this window, what impact that could have on the squad, regardless of who they buy to replace him.

This is Moyes's best team since he arrived. Other than Rooney and maybe Arteta, you would struggle to name a former player who would be in his current first team. I would say only Man City have a better first team than ours when all fit, that is how good I think our team is.

With Moyes's current contract coming to an end and constant speculation around Baines's future, would or could we maintain our form for the last 18 games without Fellaini? How would Moyes perceive his sale, again regardless of how much he would have to spend from the transfer?

He needs money to strengthen now and if that is not enough come May then so be it: Fellaini, Baines and Moyes could leave, certainly with my blessing, as Moyes and this current crop of players have taken the club as far as it can go with this current board and lack of investment.

Excellent points, Gareth, and a very good piece, refreshing to read a sensible thought-out article, well done.

Good sensible comments, Gareth, and I agree.

If this board are not prepared to cash in when we have the best first team we have had for ages then it's time for not only DM to go but me too!

So Spurs have added Fryers, could be bringing Holtby in early and are on the verge of getting Damiao.

What are we doing?

Waiting for our tight-fisted board to look down the back of the sofa to scrape enough to loan some part time Latvian brick layer from BATE Borisov!

[I'm exaggerating yes, but you catch my drift!]

Personally, I'd be very surprised if this £22m release clause is true. That is 'only' £7m more then the original purpose and I'm led to believe there is also a 15% sell-on clause, thus meaning Standard are due £3.3m of any of said deal, meaning our price then becomes £18.7m!

Now I know we have no faith in Bill when it comes to finance but surely he is not this naive to propose such a deal to possible our most valuable asset... I mean, on paper and after debt, he's probably worth as much as the club on a whole, no?

However, after his recent suspension proved, this team can cope without him, I'm even tempted to think that perhaps Darron Gibson is a more important component in this side? We took 6 points from 9 during his suspension, and ironically played our best football in the game we lost against the European Champions.

There's no getting away from his talent and ability, and we'd all much rather have him than not, but I can't help feel at times we are over-reliant on him when in the side and tend to abandon our great link-up play to go long, which often means he plays with his back to Jelavic, who I'm sure we'd all agree hasn't looked close to the player we bought last year so far?

I love the lad, his goals and ability to dominate a back-line are ridiculously good, but this side would still thrive without him, and allow us to build a squad, as surely we could bring in 3 players at least with the fees being quoted?

Gareth, I know it's your opinion, but you say that only Man City have a better first team than us when all are fit. If that's the case, then why do Man Utd sit top of the Prem, a massive 16 pts ahead of us and 7 ahead of Man City?

Brian, maybe because they have deeper, more quality SQUADS. Our best 11 is probably the fourth best in the league in my humble opinion.

Joel (#792) - What if the £22 million figure being touted is actually what Everton would receive if the release clause was successfully activated (the true figure having got distorted)? That gives a rough figure of £26 million, which fits in with the itk belief that the clause figure is higher.

If the clause does exist, then it does solely because the player wanted it as a back-up plan when signing his latest contract. It makes a lot of sense (for the player) to have it at an attractive level rather than top of the market, as then it is more likely to attract a number of interested clubs who would be forced to offer top personal terms to get him to choose them.

It doesn't necessarily matter whether the player enjoys playing for us, and I think that if we don't qualify for Europe this season (and probably CL would be needed) Fellaini will be tempted away in the summer. I don't think he will go in this transfer window unless the club want him to, and it would be bad for all the reasons already highlighted..

Si Cooper (#816),

If the club are guaranteed to receive £22m from the sale after deductions, agent fee's, pay outs etc... Then I believe we'd be in a position that represents decent value.

Now there's no way in the world this whole amount would be allowed for future transactions however, surely £15m would be allowed for the kitty, meaning £7 covers the banks etc...

I worry that people know the situation with Fellaini and will continue to monitor the situation knowing he represents better value come the summer if the club fail to make CL (which given the form of other teams is a very realistic possibility). I say better value knowing that if failing to qualify for Europe makes Fellaini less happy at the club they could perhaps make him force the move, thus open to reduced offers?

On a side note, does nobody find it slightly alarming that his old man is very quiet... he's usually got something to say, unless he knows something?

Hhmmmmmm..... given Chelsea qualified for the Champions League this season and competed in it, are current holders, and are also sat in the qualification places to play in next seasons competition it might be a bit of a stretch to say they're not a 'Champions League' club, don't you think?

If they don't qualify at the end of season then fair enough, but now?

Si Cooper
855 Posted 10/01/2013 at 19:56:30
Joel, let's assume for the moment that Fellaini has enjoyed his time at EFC and appreciates the way he has been treated and around £26 million represents decent value for money in the current market.

If true then I would hope that the offers would come in well before he started agitating for a move in the summer (if we don't make the Champions League ourselves). I would hope that more than one major team would want him at that price and that should be enough to prompt a quick attempt to secure his services ahead of other teams.

Depends if it defined in Fellaini's release clause (if it exists) I would suppose Mike.

James Morgan #791 It would be like signing a new layer. In fact, if we'd signed him when we had the chance when we played them he could've rebuilt that wall at the ParkEnd for free.

* Goes to BATE homepage to check if they have a plumber for the toilets, a caterer for the food and a marketing guru. That would only cost a fraction of Fellaini's 22M AND we get 3 players as a bonus.

Mike Green
895 Posted 10/01/2013 at 22:29:52
Correct Si, it could be defined as a club who've competed in the competition within the last three years etc for all we know.

So I guess to sum this thread up, we're all reading between a lot of lines in a contract we've never seen and assuming the players thoughts for himself?

I'll wait for Skysports or the OS to break any news... Saying that, I'm still waiting for the OS to break the Gosling departure?!?

Stu, if only we could afford his wages. I think he is on huge money at the moment. Still, stranger things have happened. You have to wonder what is going on that Utd or Arsenal haven't come in for him. If Seijder's best option at present is Turkish football then we could well sign the guy yet!!!!

Hi Brian, my point is when Moyes has all his players available we have more than been a match for Utd. Since 09 we have had several wins and numerous impressive draws. As for league position and without sounding like a Liverpool fan Utd have benefitted from the intervention of the referee on numerous occasions this season, notably at Liverpool, Chelsea and City when they easily could have lost all those games. With the exception of RVP and Rooney would you honestly say they had another top quality player? Vidic and Ferdinand are injury prone and the likes of Scholes and Giggs are well past there best. I really do believe when Gibson and Miralles return we are a match for anyone.
