McCarthy eyed as Fella replacement

10/01/2013 | Comments (21)
With Marouane Fellaini already on his way, in the minds of the media hacks, numerous dubious links are being promulgated as his replacement at Everton. Both the Daily Star and the Daily Mail claim that James McCarthy of Wigan will get that honour, at the princely sum of £8m.

22 year-old McCarthy joined the Latics for £1.2m from Scottish club Hamilton in 2009 and, with over 100 appearances under his belt, has developed into one of the most promising young central midfielders in the Premier League.

Sources in Belgium, though, suggest that Fellaini looks likely to honour his pledge to repay Everton's faith in him but staying until the summer at least to help the Blues clinch a top-four finish.

This lad is top notch... has a proper engine good vision great touch but in my mind he is more of a Gibson type player than a Fellaini type. Fellaini will be hard to replace no doubt about that; but would anyone cry if we got the likes of McCarthy and Moutinho as replacements?

Him and Michu? Him and Lukaku?

I like Mcarthy but £8m is a lot of money for someone who has not totally proved himself yet. If we did have money to spend then surely Spain, where many clubs are in financial disarray, offers much better value for money with the likes of Baptisto and Jose Canas available for less than £2m each. Michu continues to show that La Liga has some real gems at bargain prices!

I like McCarthy too but would prefer we kept Fellaini. If we do sell Fellaini, I would rather he went abroad where he can't hurt us – better Madrid than Chelsea or Citteh!

And of course if we did get near £30m for him we could get the likes of Moutinho and/or a couple of very good players to fill the void.

Football is weird, I didn't want to see Rooney go but his sale didn't half help the club. Maybe the same will happen if Fellaini went?

£8m — a lot for someone who has not totally proved himself yet? Unlike the £15m we paid for Fellaini when he wasn't proven!

If the inevitable happens and we do have to sell Fellaini (hopefully not until at least the summer) then I have enough faith in Moyes to spend the money wisely — although did we really miss Fellaini as much as we thought we would when he was suspended????

How do Wigan find these guys ? Their scouting system is absolute mustard. They seem to roll off a never ending conveyor belt.

McCarthy looks a ready-made Everton star. It's written all over him. Expensive? yes, Sam, but guaranteed reliability. A trait which does not always accompany Spanish goods.

All the same, with Michu in mind, it's well worth considering.

So this leaves me with McCarthy or "Odd Job" from Club Brugges in the middle and the Norweigan lad at the back... and I'm only warming up.

What I've seen of McCarthy, he has got skill, I remember when we signed Fellaini, fans came on here, questioning the signing, as they had not seen or heard of him.

Martinez is a good judge of young talent, whether we sign the Wigan lad, remains to be seen.

Sam Hoare is spot on here, We should be pillaging the less-well-off Spanish clubs. The TV money in La Liga is nowhere near as equally split as in the EPL which means there are a lot of clubs being forced to sell. We should cash in here.

The trouble with buying from abroad, though, gents, is – for every Michu, there is a Xisco, a Albert Crusat....

At least with McCarthy you have a lad who has amassed a decent number of games in a side that plays good footy and has also showed he can mix it!

I say why not, if we are indeed looking at him?

I think we can do better than McCarthy, certainly for £8M. I'd be happy for another Gibson for a few million to provide a bit more bite in centre mid.

In fact, I think we shouldn't be looking at replacing Fellaini. I think we should be looking at long-term replacements for Howard, Pienaar and Hibbert, while providing cover for Mirallas (or just a new Right winger and shift Mirallas forward with Jelly).

Fellaini is pretty unique in the attributes he has, so we won't easily find a direct replacement to play the same role. I think £25-30M could be much better employed in giving the team youth with pace and creativity, something the team generally lacks and which is holding us back from being a top 4 side.

Not a prayer we'll get Michu. He looks destined for bigger and better things. Then again, it could well be a case of 2nd season syndrome. I mean look at Jelavic. Last season he looked like a world beater... this season he has been very average. Same with Cisse at Newcastle, so be careful what you wish for.

We definitely need another striker though. Anichebe has had a decent season so far but you always get the feeling with him he's one poor game away from throwing his toys out the pram.

Why would we replace Fellaini with a Portuguese midget? I agree with some of the above comments regarding Spanish players. For the money we get for fella we could buy 2-3 top notch Spanish players. That's if BK........

Name all these top-notch Spanish players? Michu is in a golden period; he will tail off, or completely go off the boil next season – just like Jelly has. Every transfer is a gamble – just ask Chelsea with their Ladyboy.

The fact is you have to take a calculated gamble; the fact is the Wigan lad has played over 100 games in the Prem and is getting better and better. He is only 22 and British (Scottish) therefore would have a better sell-on value. For £8 mill he is well worth the gamble.

As well as Spain, Germany is producing talented youngsters by the bucketload. Another place worth looking at. Looks like Moyes seems to be focusing more on Belgians and Scandinavians though. Also good pickings there at the moment.

Wondering what everyone's thoughts would be on making a move for Huddlestone? Similar player to Gibson, so would be a good backup for him. Seem to remember reading he could be available for 2-3 million...

Sean Mckenna, the point is that given buying players is a gamble you might as well buy them when they are clearly undervalued which is the case with several players in Spain. The opposite is true in England. Though I would back McCarthy to the hilt if we signed him I think £8m is a huge amount on someone of his standing for a club with our resources. Whereas Jose Canas for example is apparently available for around £800k and if he didn't work out we could in all likelihood still sell him for a profit. If you're talking about calculated gambles then surely you see the sense in that.

I'm not keen on Huddlestone, Geoff. Beautiful striker of the ball but far too static. So is Gibson for that matter...

I would much prefer someone who defends well but can suddenly burst forward, beat a man, make a pass and try to score whilst moving at pace. These players who need to stand still or slow down in order to read the game and make a pass are not for me...

The powerful, mobile Dembele has given Spurs an added dimension and it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to find that DM is thinking along the same lines. Let's face it, we are playing well but need to go up a notch.

Michael K, when did not for sale mean anything these days. About as much as Blackpool saying they wouldn't let their manager go to Blackburn about 4 hours before he did
