Updated: Blues linked with Capoue

14/01/2013 | Comments (37)
Updated After report on a French website claimed that Toulouse midfielder Étienne Capoue will join Everton as Marouane Felliani's replacement for a fee of between €10m and €12m, another source across the Channel says that Everton scouts will watch the 24 year-old in action on Saturday.

Soudoest.fr suggested that Capoue will undergo a medical on Merseyside "in the next couple of days" with a view to making the switch from Ligue 1 to the Premier League and while that seems highly unlikely, Le10's assertion that representatives from the Blues will travel to France this weekend to watch Toulouse take on Nancy does add another tenet to the story.

Capoue, who has four caps for his country, has been described by his club manager, Alain Casanova, as "the best Toulouse player in the last twenty years," and is apparently also being tracked by Arsenal and Hoffenheim.

Fella going for between €10-12M? Why not just give him away? What a load of BS.

Capoue for £10 m, Colin.

Not happening, though.

Sounds like its Etiene, defensive midfielder in the Fellaini mould.

That Etienne is the type of enforcer in centre midfield we need, but lack of funds etc...

All the London and North east clubs have been active of late and we are still in the stalls.

Old Harry does more business than Del Boy everywhere he goes.

He seems to only move to clubs who don't mind spending money so he will never manage EFC.

Its a good job the media don't rely on us for transfer activity, the pages would be blank !

I bet Pompey supporters watch with interest as Redknapp bankrupts QPR with unbridled spending!

Redknapp still up to his old tricks. Transfers, brown envelopes, agents showing their gratitude for 'oiling the wheels' etc, etc.

A significant correlation between this man and increased transfer activity at every club, especially bringing them in from abroad. The other one is Allardyce whose son just happens to be a football agent! It's not the value necessarily, or probably the need of the club, but the sheer volume of deals they do at every club they manage that causes me suspicion

We never did find out who the two Managers were that Sven was talking about in his secretly recorded conversation on that yacht did we?

It's mad, isn't it? Redknapp moans about overpaid players brought in by Hughes... then breaks the bank to pay Remy (who has only started 2 games this season, I think) a small fortune. I'm not a big fan of Warnock, but if they'd kept him last season they'd probably be higher in the table and many millions of pounds better off!

I'd say this story is a load of Capoue!
Anybody?

I don't get why we are so slow in the market, surely we should have identified targets and started talks by mid month.

True or not, I know we cannot spend the amount of money most can, but we must be one of the lowest spenders in Prem. We are sitting at a very big crossroads here. Chance with a little investment of getting 4th, or showing no ambition, and losing Fellaini, Baines and Moyes in the summer.

Now I am not asking for 15 million pound signings, but there are some real bargains out there, i.e. Diame from West Ham, Sissoko from France amongst others. Jela needs a bit of competition and needs a good right winger, as Mirallas has been out forever.

We definitely need to sort out the defence; I think part of that though is Howard on the wain (he seems to have no command of his area... Butland maybe). Also, a tough tackling midfielder.

I just hope Moyes has something up his sleeve, as all the teams directly around us are strengthening.

At first glance, I thought it was Al Capone. It might as well be, as Everton, have as yet, no money to buy anyone.

Due for a medical this week. Selling Fellaini or the Vadis money?
Wayne Smyth

Gavin, we turnover about £80M and 75% if that is available for the first team squad in salaries etc.

We may be one of the lowest spenders in terms of signing players every year, but that is because Moyes has already spent it all. The amount of cash we spend on players per season is probably more than most. There is nothing left to sign new players except what Moyes generates through turning over the playing staff, just like he did with Rooney, Lescott, Arteta, Bily, etc.

Personally I think he should quit griping about lack of cash, make use of what he has and generate funds by selling Heitinga(with his £3m a year salary) and anyone we get a really good offer in for. We don't need world cup finalist defenders who can barely get a game being paid a fortune to sit on the bench. We need a half decent centre mid so phil neville can be benched and someone with pace and trickery on the right wing. Cover can be made up by using our academy players.

I'd be delighted if BK buggered off tomorrow and was replaced by someone who really cared about the club, or was prepared to clear our debts and give us a pile of cash, but that's never going to happen. In the meantime, BK should definitely NOT be borrowing more money to give Moyes a few million quid extra to work with. Our club needs to live within its means, rather than spend while banking on a CL push and then do a Leeds.

I cannot understand why people are suggesting we are particularly slow in the transfer market this window.

You only have to look at todays BBC transfer window deals ("Strachan appointed Scotland manager...") to see that hardly any business is being done by anyone. There's been the odd loan signing, but apart from the usual culprits (e.g. Chelsea), the window hasn't exactly been busy.

Probably because no-one has any money to spend. The old days of being able to borrow dosh from the banks on the never-never are long gone. It's no coincidence that the busiest transfer windows coincide with the arrival of TV money for the next period.

So to moan about Everton being slow is a bit unfair, really.

016 Posted 15/01/2013 at 19:04:03
Jeremy there will be money to spend but it will all be spent in one evening - so that Sky can have their 'Sam and Harrry; show , 'players in need;' or 'red-faced day' or whatever its called - 2 weeks on Thursday, not by us though. I don't know why the window has to last a whole month. Might as well have a 48 hour period in which to buy and sell and then we can all concentrate on the football.

Not that we'll be major players even when it does all start to happen on the last day. Being an Everton fan on deadline day is a bit like being the designated driver on a stag weekend.
Jeremy Benson

Robert, thats the same for any club without a rich benefactor. i.e. anyone other than chelsea or man city.

Given the income they generate, neither Man Utd nor Arsenal flash their cash above their means. Liverpool appear to have wasted all of their "new ownership/honeymoon period" cash last season, the rest of the clubs are just as prudent as everton currently are. Ignore clubs that will desperately spend in an attempt to avoid relegation, thats just a gamble.

Look, I'd like to buy players too, but I think there needs to be some pragmatism from fans when looking at what we have/have not. We are in the same position as the majority of clubs in our division.

There is rarely spare cash in january. And thats how it should be - managers should have used all the available transfer funds in the summer, so that players can be bedded in and get a pre-season in. And be in their plans for the full season.

So when January buying action happens, its quite often down to unexpected player movements which has freed up cash. One transfer kicks off another, which leads to another, and then another...etc. In the absence of sales, its just loan signings which don't cost much. This is the way its always been pretty much, so I'm amazed at the incredulity over how quiet it's been.

Robert we normally leave everything until the last minute of the transfer window meaning that we're usually one of the more active clubs that day.

Would be a very good signing as an addition to the squad (not as a replacement to Felli as he's not going anywhere yet) but as we are skint I can't see it happening.

Regarding QPR, I think they made a massive mistake by sacking Warnock and appointing that chequebook manager Hughes. How many of his signings have really performed at that club? Remy and M'Vila are decent players but they should have strengthened Warnock's promotion squad, not ditched them for a bunch of overpaid, uninterested has beens. In contrast look at how well Norwich and Swansea have done by trusting the core players from their promotion sides. Some want too much too soon!

Fellaini's fee demolishes credibility but he has played like a slow motion non-trying fairy since his suspension. The Croatian lad has been trying to do the work of two men.

Odjidja-Ofoe has been giving the manager trouble at Club Brugge so maybe he's another one with his bags packed.

Even without Fellaini, we still have a pretty good squad. They just need to be coached and used properly. We're still lying handy and it would be wrong for me to say that I haven't enjoyed the footy this season, because I have. Nevertheless, with so much money at stake, it's going to be a real no-holds-barred dogfight all the way.

As for new additions. I'm not the slightest bit worried We'll do fine. I'm an Evertonian so I can dream. It's what we do. A new tall commanding goalie would be fantastic but BK loves Howard. Someone who can supply constant crosses from the RIGHT wing. Mirallas and Coleman like to come inside. A strong midfield dynamo who can win the ball and move quicker than Gibson.. Odjidja or McCarthy perhaps. We missed out on Dembele... what a player.

Let the fella go, please – just let him go. After all, he isn't even on our legend list.... So what? But I don't agree with the fee we are selling him for – at least £20M – that would be better for us to look for more options in the squad.

I know that it is more than likely that we have no money to spend and that, if anything happens, it will be at the last minute and probably end up with a player being sold. I also know that YouTube could make anyone look good but, after having a quick look, I think this lad would be a good signing to play alongside Gibson or Fellaini when one or the other is injured or not on form. We could even play all three and have Fellaini play behind the striker, which seems to be Moyes's preferred choice these days.

How is it that Lukaku ended up at West Brom on loan? Why were we not in for him? Now Livermore is off on loan elsewhere too.

Surely it's better to bring young players in rather than give jobs to the likes of Hahnemann, McFadden and now Hitzlsperger? We do not need other teams' cast-offs, it's embarrassing.

Lukaku and Livermore are both young and have distinct promise, especially Lukaku who has looked excellent at West Brom; he has more promise than either Wellbeck or Sturridge and would have been fantastic business. I'm sure we would have won quite a few of those drawn games if he had been up front for us.

Bringing in the three mentioned above has shown a distinct lack of real ambition. All are stopgaps and have not enhanced the team at all. I want us to keep the players we have and get in a couple of decent loan players like the two mentioned and stop wasting what little money we supposedly have on paying wages to crocks and has-beens.

Hopefully Capoue will come in to fill the gap in midfield and not to take over from Fellaini. Perhaps he is the replacement for Odjidja-Ofoe?

Trevor (#127),

As I understand it in order to get Lukaku WBA had to pay a loan fee in the region of £2 million for the season and also pay the players wages (estimated to be £30,000 a week). I doubt we could afford that during the summer when the loan was agreed.

Even loaning players has its cost, and if they are already considered Premier League quality that cost isn't insignificant!

Our friends across the park lost £5 million over all on Nuri Sahin!!!!

The problem with Everton, unlike even the likes of QPR, have to sell the better and more promising players to bring other ones in. It's like one step forward, then one step backwards.

The problem for Everton is that we can't just magic up £10m on one player for one fixed position. We have been so broke for so long that we need to plan ahead for six months just so we can decide how much we can spend on a player who can do ten different jobs. Then we have to figure out who we sell to raise the funds and then who exactly it is we are buying.

Wayne 011 - "We may be one of the lowest spenders in terms of signing players every year, but that is because Moyes has already spent it al" — how's that then?

I didn't realise he controlled the money at the club as well as the players contracts... hmmmm, no wonder he gets paid so much a year, he does everything!

Trevor,

Just to add to Steve's point, I imagine its because of Steve Clarke's history with Chelsea as well. He was assistant to Mourinho for a while.

And with Livermore, well, aint that obvious? Spurs are probably our closest rivals to us, it wouldnt make sense for them to give us a player to improve our squad.

This Capoue is very good though, do hope we get him. He's that midfield dynamo we have been missing for a while.

Someone said Fellaini and Pienaar are on about £80,000 a week. Is that right? If it is I'm not surprised we're in a mess. Doesn't the little fella feel shame when he flashes his "God is great" tee-shirt ? He ought to.... and where is he with the camel and eye of the needle thing? Dodgy stuff indeed!!!

Capoue looks good but Moussa Sissoko who is out of contract this summer is a similar player and would probably be about 1/3 of the price.

I suspect that unless we make CL then this summer will see a bit of a clear out with high wage players (like Fellaini) making way for more affordable alternatives. Certainly we cannot carry on as we have been.

Ben Jones
247 Posted 16/01/2013 at 22:09:02
Maybe more rumours, but M'Vila aint going to QPR and apparently Fulham want him, but cant afford, but some guy on BBC said an unnamed PL club want him on a loan then buy option.

Could that be us? Would be a hell of a buy if we got him. Maybe getting a little too excited, but Moyes does always pull these loan deals out of the bag, and it is exactly what we're looking for in centre mid.

It just kills me that we are always skint yet we don't look to better our commercial figures for more funds. The only way we ever have money is player wheeling-dealing.

How about we penetrate the US and Asian markets more?? Why do we never have jerseys for sale anywhere?? After all of the bloody Americans that we've had over here, we should've been "America's Team". Instead, we haven't capitalized on any of it. (We signed Joe Max fucking Moore for crying out loud!)

20 years of Americans coming though the system yet it's Liverpool who have a fucking series on TV in America. Beyond ludicrous. We'd have a lot more money if we just had some brains.

I see this (along with all players linked or scouted that would cost big money) as no more than DM and his scouting team doing their research on players they are monitoring... IF any departures occur this window and they have to move fast.
