Manchester City join Chelsea in chase for David Moyes

10/02/2013 | Comments (45)
The Mirror claims that Manchester City have joined Chelsea in 'the chase' for David Moyes. The Scot supposedly joins the likes of Klopp, Pellegrini and Mourinho on the Blues owner's most wanted list of next managers.

David Moyes is emerging as a shock target for Manchester City — if Roberto Mancini is sacked. Moyes has yet to commit himself to Goodison Park past the end of the season and is now on Chelsea's shortlist of new managers.

But the Scot may be tempted to see if the City job becomes available before making any decisions about his future. Manchester United have ruled out a move for him as he has virtually no Champions League experience.

Roman Abramovich has supposedly taken soundings from players on his next appointment and Moyes features highly on the list of candidates. Sources close to Moyes claim the 49-year-old would need convincing he would be given a fair chance of becoming a success at Chelsea.

City's owners have proved to be far more patient and the club's manager must oversee a project that will involve trying to bring players through from the Academy, as well as using the massive financial resources more wisely. Moyes has shown, at Everton, that he can find value in the transfer market and promote players from inside the club. But a lack of Champions League experience and global appeal could hold him back.

Please, please, please, take him! Man Utd, RS, Chelsea, and Arsenal — he just cannot win at these grounds and he's had 10 years of trying. I know god loves a trier, but this has gone beyond a joke. I sense the Everton players are feeling sorry for themselves in this game.

I hope Moyes does leave, so he can actually have a chance to win something, it wouldn't kill me if Fellaini and Baines left also. I honestly feel bad for them, they will never finish higher than 6th on this club. I'd like for them to win a trophy one day.

Does Moyes actually own all these newspapers? If he gets a gig at either of these clubs, I hope he gets an 11-year contract without any trophies. Will they keep him that long....

Clarence, you are actually very near my thoughts and feelings about the EFC situation. Our board have been absolutely carried by Moyes for the past 10 years. From the point of relegation and saved by Kevin Campbell to a consistent top 10 team in the Premier League.

The man is castigated by fickle fans and he is a virtual 'punchbag' for the board who are a disgrace.

If he goes then God help us because this board will not contribute any financial support to any prospective manager stupid enough to take his place. He is well paid and his project was and still is to keep us in the Premier League. He has done that and gained himself a very good reputation by neutrals who can see that he lacks backing but has now produced a very good first eleven.

I believe he wants to take the club further but is stymied by this board who are happy with survival, once the 40 points is gained. They will only produce a serious amount of money for transfers if relegation threatens. The fans are ignored and only a big drop in attendances will stir activity from this indolent bunch of multi-millionaires.

Trevor, Clarence, anyone who wants an employee to succeed to spite the club needs to have a major look at themselves.

However, I look forward to Moyes leaving to see if a major English football institution will wither and die just because a manager (one of the highest paid in world football) who has yet to win anything, leaves.

If he gets the job within the higher echelons that you clearly feel he deserves, I also look forward to see how he copes with a board and fanbase who will expect him to cope with the Messi's and Ronaldo's and win away in the Champions League and deliver these trophies . I hope he does better than he did against D.Bucharest, Liege, Lisbon etc.

It will also be interesting to see how he likes the chairman telling him who to buy and sacking him after a losing streak.

I also look forward to seeing how many 'stupid' coaches will want a job that can pay £3million p/year ,have a squad full of internationals on big money and a chairman who is notoriously loyal AND doesn't expect to win anything.

Trevor, these neutrals you talk of, there are plenty who believe the Everton 'model' is the way forward for those with no billionaires to bank roll them. You conveniently ignore that though don't you?!

Man City and Chelsea are graveyards for managers.

No instant success, goodbye.

Moyes likes to build carefully and slowly to blend a team together.

No much chance at City or Chelsea.

Actually Chris I don't want him to succeed to spite the club, all I'm saying is after managing for 10 years with a shoestring budget, and always seeing his best players leave, I'd be happy for Moyes if he got a chance to see what he can do with a lot of money, and if he fails so be it.

I would not begrudge the gaffer an ounce of success he gets anywhere else and there is a case to make that his no-nonsense decent dignified approach would make both Chelski and Shitty better operations.

But their owners are mega capitalists and succeed at all costs mind-sets and our gaffer would (1) not strike the right cords at either place (2) not wish to be put in that position and (3) is a decent and dignified bloke, the main reason I still like him - not the same as supporting him at this moment in time - and will follow his heart not his wallet.

I'm not one who believes that DM deserves a richer club. His forte may well turn out to be an Everton. He has no history of splashing out huge sponds, though I wonder how much input he would have at the Bridge, another reason given his feathered nest in L4 for him to hang on. There is little in DM's CV to say he would make a tip-top big sponds/Champs league gaffer - but if he did, I would be happy for him.

For me, it is time to part company for his ambitions and our sake. But the big question, who else? He's more likely to go than be pushed, so in some respects that's totally fucking irrelevant.

Most likely scenario, DM resigns, so who else doesn't fucking matter, we will be forced to find someone else.

Ha, who else, is always predicated on Moyes being fired and that will never happen.

Can't see Moyes going to an English club as the 'Top 4' all want someone with European experience, which Moyes doesn't have. Everton are one of the best clubs outside of the top 4 and therefore there is not really anywhere for him to go that isn't a step down.

I do think however, there is a reasonable chance, we might see him move abroad, possibly to Germany or if Lennon was ever fired then to Celtic.

City is ran like too much of a circus for them to go for someone like Moyes. Can't see their dressing room take to his disciplinarian approach either. It would take a couple of years for Moyes to impose himself and he just wouldn't get the time.

With Chelsea, I could see it. I think that the quickfire approach just hasn't worked for them and Moyes could get the time there to get all the basics right. A lack of CL experience may count against him though.

Brian Waring
312 Posted 11/02/2013 at 12:57:03
Kieran, you say City wouldn't take to Moyes's disciplinarian approach, but it would work at Chelsea, that has always been one of the problems at Chelsea though, as soon as the manager tries to stamp their authority, players start to turn on him. Also meant to say, Mancini is quite tough and it has been said that he takes the disciplinary side too far at times.

Im shocked at the amount of people on here saying 'let them have him'.

I wonder who these people think would be able to replace Moyes?
Sure we might be able to get Jose in?? haha

Folks, when Moyes goes, we will end up with someone like Dowie or Strachan. We will also have about 5 managers in 5 years!

I like the stability Moyes has brought to the club and that clearly everyone knows there role on the pitch.
I really believe were one or 2 players away from making a serious annual push for top 4.

Go through Moyes first ever Everton 11..think of what he has spent to get to where we are now! Some sensible heads required on this forum!

I just cannot believe people cannot wait to see the back of Moyes, without him were screwed!

Chris Corn
325 Posted 11/02/2013 at 13:14:50
Thomas, please explain why we would only get the likes of Dowie or Strachan?

Moyes is one of the few managers who is paid more than his players. Coupled with a loyal chairman and the ability to pay the better players circa £70k a week. We all know we can't spend £15m-20m every transfer window and even Moyes acknowledges that. But he does get the majority of what he brings in back

I always laugh when Kenwright is criticised for wanting a donor and not selling the club, when that is precisely what many of the same critics crave themselves. Someone who will throw their own money down a black hole for top players, build a ground, operate at a profit and keep season ticket prices stable.

Moyes has it good at Everton. If he goes fine, if he doesn't fine. However you will never convince me that the benefits of being Everton manager will not attract good quality candidates.

Dennis Shaw
329 Posted 11/02/2013 at 13:36:33
Thomas 313 - how on earth would we be screwed without Moyes at the helm? We would attract a top manager as we are a top team the negativity from Kenwright and Moyes are the only things holding us back.

The mighty Swansea, Southampton, WBA have all brought in new managers and have excelled are you trying to tell me them teams are a better prospect than Everton.

It's déjà vu every season now climbs to the top 5/6, a cup run, transfer optimism dashed in the last minutes before it all just crumbles before us. A big change is needed at this Club.

Kenwright, Moyes, Elstone, Anichebe, Naismith, Heitinga and Neville should all be gone by the summer.

Richard Reeves
352 Posted 11/02/2013 at 14:43:57
If Moyes really does know our history then he should do the honourable thing and leave at the end of the season. It's funny how he keeps getting linked to a Champions League club but we all know the score: it's never going to happen and we all know why.

The only clubs in Britain that he might get offers from could be Celtic or Villa but I still don't believe he would leave for either, he's got it too easy here. I think the best thing to do would be to take a year or two out from the game and recharge the batteries.

Martin Handley
418 Posted 11/02/2013 at 17:34:45
Look I've said many times before on here that I don't like Moyes but by the same token I don't dislike him either and it's the same with Bill Kenwright as well.

I read a lot on here about Kenwright turning buyers away from the club but there's never been any hard evidence that anybody has ever been remotely interested in buying our great club mainly and unfortunately because will are not a big worldwide "brand" like our shyster neighbours from over the park. Also the blame for our financial situation lies fairly and squarely on the shoulders of the tosser that is Peter Johnson there was no debt before he arrived but we ended up on shit street when he left. Yes I know people will quote the embarrassments of kings dock and Kirkby and quite rightly but as I say the problems financially began with dj spuddles.

Now on to David Moyes yes he's done remarkably well with what he's been dealt with but and it's a big but he's been extremely close to a trophy on at least three occasions and failed miserably on each of them also his track record against so called big teams is quite appalling ,these are the factors that will count against him. Another thing that will count against ,more so at Chelsea I think than anywhere else,is his like for total control of all footballing matters, many foreign chairman are of the mindset that this is my club and you will put up with how I run it.

If David Moyes stays cool,if not I'll wish him all the best and wave him on his way. Everton was he before and will survive after Moyes ,who may just be shocked at the calibre or lack of clubs that may or may not bang his door down. But please don't keep laying all the blame at Kenwrights door for this situation.

That is laughable. City and Chelsea after Moyes... come on, have a word.

He's won nothing. We are his pinnacle, if he can't do it here then he's got no chance anywhere else.

All those saying what will happen when he goes, we'll get a new manager and we'll move on.

Jamie Barlow
438 Posted 11/02/2013 at 18:47:44
Yeah, he's got no chance after spending £200 million at either club.

He's got a far better chance of winning something at our wonderful club where he gets all the backing he wants.

Michael Winstanley
440 Posted 11/02/2013 at 18:51:41
Do you really believe he'd win anything with City or Chelsea? He's not a winner. He doesn't have it in his locker.

Ten years he's had and when have we ever looked like being winners in any of the big games we've played in?

Everton FC is the best thing that will ever happen in David Moyes's life, we are the biggest and best job he will ever have. He should be on his knees thanking the club for his employment. The only way is downhill for him when he leaves the club.

He would not get his foot through the door in the first place but if he did then he would not last 6 months at Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd. Arsenal might have him but only if the forgot the Wenger years and revert to the '1 - 0 nil to the Arsenal' days.

Sam Hoare
442 Posted 11/02/2013 at 18:58:00
Ray, some could say the complete opposite, that David Moyes is the best thing that has happened to Everton recently and that WE may go downhill without him. Certainly he will be difficult to replace.
Michael Winstanley
444 Posted 11/02/2013 at 19:01:00
I disagree Sam, I think a new manager coming in would shake things up. A fresh pair of eyes, maybe a Plan B and whole new Plan A.

I do agree Moyes has brought stability to the club in the football sense but we've reached the ceiling. Moyes cannot take us any further and for that reason we need a change.

Ray Said
451 Posted 11/02/2013 at 19:11:59
Sam, Moyes did a great job in moving the club on from the position it was in. I just don't see how a manager without any trophy wins, with one 4th place finish and very limited European experience gets the job at Chelsea, Man City or Man Utd. He doesn't have the CV they would be looking for.
Sam Hoare
454 Posted 11/02/2013 at 19:18:21
Ray, I agree he probably won't get any of those jobs. Lack of European experience being the key as you say.

Michael, I'm not opposed to a new manager at all, but I do think whoever comes in will do well to keep us in the top 7 as Moyes has done if he receives similarly poor financial backing.

485 Posted 11/02/2013 at 20:04:41
I don't think so Jamie, we're as good as he is.

Sam, I agree the risk of new manager coming in could see us drop down the league whilst he seeks to impose his own brand of football. However, if he is given ten years then we could expect him to do better than Moyes has.

Moyes has had money and our wages are high, I think and hope a new man could do better with what we have.

Sam Hoare
488 Posted 11/02/2013 at 20:09:25
Michael, in his ten years, with a laughable net spend, Moyes has moved us around 7-8 places up the league. I'll be delighted if the next manager can match that!

Have to admit that it would not be hard for a new manager to improve on Moyes's pretty woeful cup record.

Moyes has brought stability, no doubt about that Sam. And I'm very happy he has. However, I believe he's reached his limit. There's nowhere for us to go from here, he can't do anything any different than he already has. If we as club have any ambition then we should acknowledge what he's done for us and say thank you and find the next manager to take us forward. We have a decent squad, it's small because of the wages we pay, maybe a new manager would mix it up a bit more. The grass may not be greener, we could have a range of managers who fail to achieve what Moyes has, we won't know until we try.

Colin Wainwright #748 please learn to read properly before hitting the sarcasm at no point did I praise Bill Kenwright I just pointed out that he takes an unfair amount of blame for the clubs financial plight when a very large portion of the blame lies elsewhere before his current encumbrance, also I was calling LFC as a club shysters not just the owners so please as I say learn to read a post as a whole not just snippets .

And yes the club was on a solid footing before Johnson arrived that is why I place the blame at his door as do most people, yes Kenwright can be a fool, misguided and liberal/economic with the truth at times but please don't think I blame him for everything that is wrong at Everton as it seems a lot people including you do.

You can't seriously tell me that you would prefer Johnson to still be in charge would you?

Hilarious, absolutely hilarious! The only thing the Moyes sycophants have got in the far too cautious, tactically inept, big game bottlers defense is 'he's had no money to spend' . This pathetic excuse gets trotted out time after time after time by those who are grasping at straws in his defense – so much so that it has become a cliché, a self-serving mantra that just makes me laugh out loud.

Peter Johnson vs bill Kenright. Jesus, the battle of turning footballing wine to water. Reverse footballing Darwinism.

1. 1-2 on failed ground moves
2. 1-0 on actually putting own money into the club
3. Sold ferguson vs sold sky money, sold season ticket loan, sold belle field, sold Rooney
4. Your assets on running around the pitch vs your assets are running around the pitch and we're losing £10m a season, bobby go and get the net.

Colin Wainwright

Martin. The club owned the best part of £30M worth of assets and were debt free, when the greatest Evertonian begged and borrowed his way to the top job. The vast majority of the blame lies at his and his cronies door.
