Baines set to go if no Champions League

11/02/2013 | Comments (70)
Goal.com make the totally unsubstantiated claim that Leighton Baines will tell Everton he wants to leave if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League. The left-back supposedly believes this summer could represent his last chance of a transfer to a top club.

The England international is under contract until 2015 and Everton are likely to demand £20M in the summer for a player who David Moyes said was ‘as good a left-back as there is'.

Baines needs to be playing CL for his England career. Fellaini (if anyone bids for him) will also be on his way. And hopefully Moyes will be gone in the summer.

The one we need to keep is Jags.

I'm perfectly content if this happens and we get £20 million, same with Felli and £30 million. Combined with the extra league revenue, that's £70 million; let Moyes (or whoever) spend £30-40M of it, put the rest towards the debt and figure the wage bill will go down a little and we will probably be exactly where we are now but with less wages and less debt. Even if we lose a few more games due to lack of quality, we have young replacements getting ready for both of them. Is 10th really so much worse than 6th-7th if it means a better shot at the future?

What future, Joey? Premier League survival? Is that what NSNO means to yo you? Well count me out. I will never accept such a mediocre, snivelling attitude at my club. Are you BK in disguise?

That's all we do now Colin. We won't win anything with Moyes leading the charge. We can only survive by selling our better players and reinvesting.

I'm with you, Colin. But I don't blame any player or manager from wanting away because this board is a disgrace. So long as they cry poverty and refuse to allow the manager to strengthen a woefully small squad its no wonder that any player with ambition wants away.

Baines, Jags and Fellaini could all win trophies at clubs who strived for them. The January transfer window showed the board in its true colours. Now the loan window is open and three players have gone OUT on loan since it closed. NONE have arrived... 'nuff said!

The sale of Baines and Fellaini – and the inevitable exit of David Moyes – would virtually write off the club`s debts and reduce the wage bill by a substantial amount. That prospect might appeal to BK who could recruit a manager for a third of the present cost and give him say, £10M from new Sky dough to build a new team.

Horrified? Maybe, but don`t bet against that scenario!

None have come in Trevor, they wouldn't have got a game anyway lets be honest.
Oveido looks half decent, can't get a game. Hitz can't in ahead of Neville in midfield. Our new right back can't get a game ahead of Neville (and yes I would have played him against Utd). Jelavic gets the service but only when he's on the wing.
Why didn't Moyes bring in a few new faces? Probably because the ones available weren't better then the ones he's already not playing.

It's tragic Harold. The optimism has gone, the harsh reality has finally hit home and folk are upset. I feel aggrieved, so much early season promise, so much to build on and yet we're sliding. Can we turn it around? I doubt it, we don't score enough and worryingly we're not creating. No new faces, no new tactics, we're slowly reverting to type, keep it tight...

Complete space-filler bullshit guesswork by whoever goal.com are, however I can definitely see it happening if a North West side comes in for him (so..er..City or United). Let's face it, for him it'll mean improved England chances, loads more money (one big final big 5-year deal etc) plus the chance of some CL. As for him staying with us, well if we don't finish 4th (and imo we have very little hope) next season he'll be part of a team asked to chase the pack (again) but without Fellaini. Really hope he's not lured away but certainly possible and probably..um..probable.

In agreement with you there Domonic, but not sure on exactly how much would be re-invested back into the team. £25-30M maybe and the remainder going towards the debt. I wonder if the current manager will see it that way or will the funds be used by another manager?

You have to feel sorry for Baines as he is a great professional and very loyal. I think he will go to United in the summer and I don't begrudge him one bit. The January transfer window pretty much showed that we are not an ambitious club at board level, only at fan level. It will be hard for him to leave because of the fans but the crap board we have will lose us any quality players over the next few seasons.
Ian Smitham
597 Posted 11/02/2013 at 23:29:59
Watch the United second goal, imagine he misses and Tim parries it away, who will get to it , Valencia or Baines??

I am beginning to wonder if LB thinks he is off??

Still Domenic, Oviedo must be worth a shout, and like Andy, I do not begrudge him his chance.

As for. Fella, if he has to go then Chelsea it must be, and the deal must include Lukaku coming to us. This frees up a sale of Jelly, who is not as good as Lukaku, we can sell JH and replace him with Duffy who cannot be worse, and introduce Stones at RB as it is another area we are weak at. The above will reduce the wage bill, reduce the age of the squad, allow some spending on extending the squad and even allow some debt repayment. Sounds easy, I am sure it is not, but others get paid a load more than me to sort it.

The transfer window showed us what's what. Ownership is moving on to what comes next.

Moyes is gone. Fella will be sold. Baines right behind, if not in front of. Throw in Heitinga? A major cash infusion (and wage dump) for the owners.

Baines is in his late 20s. He'll stick around for a re-building program? Why?

We should be talking about what comes next. Because next season starting with Baines, Fella, and Johnny still in the squad will be a shock.

Been over a year since I closed with this:

Kenwright et al OUT!

I cannot believe that anyone is wanting Moyes out, just think of how far the club has gone, the players and quality that we have at the club. Even though we don't have much money, we always seem to come up with good bids for quality players. All we need is a new investor/owner so be can keep up money wise with the higher clubs and we will be climbing the league.

Is selling players really such a bad thing? Compare Tottenham and us, the former ran by Levy who is not that interested in football but who is a brilliant business man and us with the die hard fan connection but couldn't run the proverbial decent drink in a brewery.

Tottenham regularly sell their best players, but not before ensuring they have made the other side pay over the odds. I imagine for all talk of £20m, Man Utd will of course start their offer for Baines at £12m. Levy would laugh and refuse to answer the phone, BK would probably get back on and ask them to throw in another fringe player as well.

Tottenham fans know Bale will probably go this summer, and don't like it but accept they will get top dollar for him. If that is then re-invested in the team and they keep contending next season they will be happy.

The trick is not necessarily keeping your best players but ensuring you get the right return and properly investing it back into the team. It will never happen under BK.

For me, we could only have hung on to these players if we had qualified for the CL. Why should they stay otherwise? Sell them in the summer while we can still get as large amount of cash and improve the overall quality of the squad.

Colin @455, NSNO today will only be observed by selling players. It is where the club is at, whether us as fans like it or not. The Board has no interest in putting money into the club and trying to make it the best it can be. Moyes can only do so much and you get the feeling he has been worn down. Any other manager coming in will be asked to work under the same constraints that he has for the last 10 years. Players in this day and age don't just stay at a club for the sake of the badge.

For many fans now, the only way that the club can possibly be significantly improved is for us to sell the likes of Fellaini and Baines in the summer and use the cash to clear debts and improve the squad overall.

I am a fan of Moyes, Fellaini and Baines but think that if we don't make the top 4 then it is time for all three to go.

There is the money we were going to spend on Fer, plus £50 mil for the combined Fellaini and Baines plus nominal fees for Heitinga and Naismith; giving whoever comes in to replace the manager a healthy amount of cash and a fresh start to build a team in his own image.

I still think we can make it to 4th, although it'll be incredibly difficult. If we don't though, we need a fresh start.

Sam Hoare

Baines goes - we'll survive.
Fellaini goes - we'll survive.
Baines Fellaini AND Moyes goes.... we are fucked!

You thought Walter was bad? He did the best he could; Moyes has done wonders and, as good as you may think the rest are, we will have a bottom half squad without Baines and Fellaini and no other manager will keep us top half.

Without Moyes, we are Aston Villa. We have hit our glass ceiling and Moyes deserves credit for us bouncing our foreheads on it. Without substantial backing, no-one could do better.

Colin 455, what Joey was setting out there for you was a business strategy for how a club like Everton can model itself to be competitive in the long-term without a major investment from a overseas buyer. After all, the plan Joey set out is exactly what Lyon and Dortmund have practised for a decade.

Can't stand this emotionalist abuse that the likes of you peddle against other Evertonians who offer realistic views, just so you can position yourselves as the purist conscience of the club. Fuck right off unless you can step up with a realistic strategy yourself that can work in the current situation we find ourselves in.

I think most on here would settle for the loss of Baines and Fellaini –and add Moyes too – so long as a cleaning up of the balance sheet meant Kenwright went with them and steps were taken to establish a functional, business-driven Board without him and his cronies.

If the sale proceeds and he stays, true revolution is in the air!

Joe: some conjecture for sure, but not utter. Left back was Oviedo's position when he played FC Copenhagen. Baines does have his limitations defensively and on bad days he can lose possession a bit too easily as well, as was the case against Manchester United. I have faith in Oviedo.

I think Moyes has taken Everton as far as he can. He was an improvement on Smith but that's it, no win at Old Trafford, Anfield, Stamford Bridge or The Emirates, no trophies and an average finish of 7th. Nothing amazing.

Kendall Mk 2 and Mk 3 was given no support from the board; Smith completely out of his depth. We are comparing him to the experience of them two. Royle won a trophy, was 6th in his one full season, and was hounded out on the back of one set of poor results which happened to coincide with a horrendous injury list.

As noted above, Fellaini, Osman, Heitinga and Baines can leave and a new manager just from the sales of them four would have about £60 million to play with. The banks could have the additional TV revenue, therefor everyone benefits. I personally don't think it would be the end of the world — hardly like when Kendall left the first time... most of us knew it was the end of us being the best side in England.

We'll miss him (Moyes) when (not IF) he's gone – mark my words! Just be careful what you wish for!

Tony Marsh – I hope, and look forward to, you coming on here in a years time (or even two to give the new guy a chance), enthusiastically braying "I told you so"! But I honestly doubt it!

As for Baines, he's the best left back I've ever seen at Everton and I've been here since 1968. He will be missed, but not as much as Moyes.

Joe Clitherow
714 Posted 12/02/2013 at 13:58:26
Dominic you have more faith than me. Sure Baines is not the best defensively but he compensates by attacking so far up the pitch. Don't rate Oviedo so far but he may improve.

Unfortunately we've heard this type of thing a lot at Everton:

"We can sell Gary Stevens, Neil McDonald can more than fill his boots"

"Kevin Sheedy -Ian Wilson"

"Trevor Steven - Stuart someone-or-other"

Etc etc etc

Colin Potter
716 Posted 12/02/2013 at 14:10:02
Mark, will you bugger off with your "Be careful what you wish for" — Moyes is just an average manager who will not take us any further because he hasn't the nouse to, and for nigh on £4m a year, I think we would have quite a queue of potentials waiting to take his place. Jesus, have you ever watched some of the crap he has dished up for us to watch, or listened to some of inane chat, post match? He has never, once took the blame for anything that has gone wrong.
Mark Murphy
730 Posted 12/02/2013 at 15:35:21
Colin, I got expelled by the nuns for using the words "bugger off" at primary school but I don't take the word as literally as they did so I'm not as offended as Sister Mary Jude was BUT...

I think we've played some decent stuff, certainly pre-Xmas actually, and I'll say right now that I am NOT a died-in-the-wool Moyes diehard fan – I often think a bit more adventure and "lets go for it" attitude would see us win the odd game at Old Trafford and Anfield – but I do think that, given the club's situation financially and the lack of backing from this board, and the player pulling power given our circumstances – that Moyes is the best man for the job.

A lot of people who know me and suffer my rantings would be astounded to hear me defend Moyes but I'm also a realist. We are where we are and what we are... and, without funding, are unlikely to get better. I just worry that without Moyes (and Baines and Fellaini) we are likely to get worse.

Dominic Bobadilla
734 Posted 12/02/2013 at 15:47:09
Joe: Lee Dixon was meant as Stevens's replacement, but we lost out on him. It was not McDonald but Snodin who played rightback once Stevens left. Snodin was so good in this position that he got an England call-up, whereas Stevens's England career was on the wane. Stevens's leaving Everton was not a big loss for the club. Ian Wilson was merely Sheedy's cover and I have no idea which Stuart you are talking about. If you mean McCall, then it must be pointed out that he was not meant to replace Steven but Reid. And if you mean Graham, then I seriously doubt that any sane Evertonian thought he would be as good as Steven. I would suggest playing Oviedo on the left, Pienaar on the right, and Mirallas behind Jelavic/Anichebe. Get Fellaini out of the hole and play him in his preferred role.
Richard Reeves

I wouldn't have a problem with selling Baines and Fellaini as long as the money is given to a new manager. Both players are top quality and very important to Moyes and Everton but not necessarily to a new manager who will have his own ideas. Laudrup is the man the board should be going for while there is a chance and the board should back him with the money from any player sales.

I really do believe that there could be a bright future for us if Everton appoint an adventurous manager who knows how football should be played and is willing to bring on some of the youth players and help them develop. We have a fantastic youth academy set up, ridiculously loyal supporters and a chairman who will give the manager time to achieve things.

Crucially as with many business's it comes down to appointing the right man and I believe that man is Laudrup but you could look abroad as there are plenty of managers that would jump at the chance of bossing a Premier League side.

Look at last time, scraped into 4th, needed investment for the CL campaign and what happens, nowt.

Never mind the accompanying Conspiracy Theory, we we just not good enough to compete without new players who never materialised, that showed up when we then got dumped out of the Champions League!

Kenwright was too busy accepting the plaudits from the public following the 4th place finish to bother his arse strengthening the squad.

I think in the end what I suggested is exactly what we have been doing for the past few years, since Rooney has left. But aside from Lescott we have never sold players at their peak. If we had held on to Rooney and sold him with another year of experience or sold Mikel and Rodwell before their injuries we would have gotten much better value. Baines and Felli are our two best players. but so were the rest (minus Rodwell) were as well and we have gotten better without them.

Getting young talent IS the way forward, and if we can wipe out some debt and get 4-5 quality players in by selling 2 players then we should all day, every day. Because no one gives a crap about the europa league and even winning it won't help the budget. And unless something dramatically changes this season, Champions League is not happening.

There is no guarantee that the money that appeared at the end of January is now waiting for the summer transfer window (if it was ever really in place to begin with) nor that we will get £50 million combined for Fellaini and Baines (personally I reckon something nearer £40 million is more likely. Factor in the likelihood that a slice of the pie will be used to pay off some debt, and you could easily be 4 players down come August with no more than £30 million to replace them and bring in a couple more. Not an insubstantial amount but it won't be 6 ten million pound players by any means.

Unless there are multiple suitors or release clauses in place, I wouldn't even bet on the money being available until near the end of August.

I love this idea that 'Moyes has taken us as far as he can'. Can anyone give me an example of who precisely we should be aspiring to, someone regularly challenging for CL places and trophies? Someone working with similar resources and who has achieved this magical 'next step'?

Of course you can't.

I accept that there could be managers who may do a better job, but there aren't any I can think of who have actually proved it to date.

Whoever we get in will be taking a chance. Again, no problem with that but what you/we are aspiring to is something no club has been able to achieve in the modern game. That's the context for our next manager – take us to the next level; take us to the point where we are regularly challenging for trophies and are challenging each season for a top four place. Take us somewhere where no manager has gone before!

We all want the same thing, but for me the real problem, with all Moyes's faults, is surely our board. I don't believe anyone managing Everton, and I mean anyone, would be able to satisfy our aspirations and achieve that kind of status under the current circumstances.

If Baines or Fellaini go the I think Moyes will go. If Moyes goes then I think Baines and Fellaini will go. Essentially I think that all 3 could well leave this summer.

BK will then have a very big decision to get right with appointing a new manager to inherit a good squad missing two talismen but possibly £20-£30m to replace them. With any luck he will also shift Heitinga and any other high wage earners not worth their corn.

The question that I suspect may dominate ToffeeWeb this summer is who will that manager be and which players should he bring in.

For me, even though still new, Laudrup looks the best candidate, with maybe Martinez and Steve Clarke not too far behind.

In terms of players I think we could do worse than follow Newcastle's example and pick up some very talented but undervalued French players. Capoue for one looks class (though why we didn't go for Sissoko I will never know).

The article is bollocks - Baines is a fantastic pro, keeps his head down and shows no signs of using the media to agitate for a move. However, he would geniunely be able to pick from a range of CL clubs should he be available. I think he deserves to be playing on the top stage, he's good enough. Everton are unlikely to provide him with this chance in what remains of his career. So realistically he should want to move on at the end of this season and we should say thanks for his services and wish him all the best and make as much money as we can to re-invest.

Ultimately, it all comes down to ambition. Moyes, Fellaini and Baines are all ambitious. Sadly the board are not. Fellaini will be gone, Baines will see what Moyes does. Moyes will do what's right for himself (rightly so).

I hope Moyes stays and finally gets the chance to spend some decent money. We have already overtaken teams like the Shite in terms of League placings, and who would have thought that even 5 years ago, despite the money they spend? We are now closer to Arsenal and Chelsea than we have been for years, and this all on about an average net spend of about £3m a year.

Show me another manager that has achieved the amount of stability we now have on that shit amount of money. We pretty much know we will finish around the top 6 every year and yes I would love us to do better and win the League or a cup and we should be, we are a massive club, but without the dosh, and with a board that might have good intentions but are sadly lacking in business nous and foresight, Moyes has always had to perform with one hand tied behind his back.

Just to clear another thing up. Moyes is the 6th highest paid manager in the League, which reflects where we usually are in the League. Not that bad a deal is it really?

Dominic thanks for the EFC history lesson, but I don't need it especially when you're wrong. But don't take my personal memory for it, take the Everton Encyclopedia:

"Ian Wilson - Underwhelming understudy to Kevin Wilson" (you'd be gutted if that was your entry!)

"Neil McDonald - faced the difficult if not impossible task of succeeding... Gary Stevens". Snodin (obviously bought as a CM) was switched in there in desperation really when McD was injured.

I suggest you look up Stuart Storer, I know who Stuart McCall and Grah am Stuart are ffs.

Tony J if you tell me to do one once again I shall reel off a list of players to make your toes curl. I'll fire a Jim Pearson across your bows as a warning.

You have been warned!

How about this for a spell of transfer deals (October 1996 to March 1997):

Out
Kanchelskis
Limpar
Jackson
Sideways
Ebbrell

In
Phelan
Claus Thomson
Slaven Bilic, Barmby

What a crock of shit.

Ps that was "Underwhelming understudy to Kevin Sheedy" not "Kevin Wilson". You'd be really peed if you were an underwhelming understudy to Kevin Wilson, whoever he was

Where is all this money coming from that people want Moyes to spend?

People need to wake up and realise that we have a budget and the manager needs to stick with it or we're going into administration.

I think the club is very badly mis-managed by Kenwright, but my beef is that he has allowed the club to take on so much debt and not increase revenues or develop the ground. Pandering to Moyes to put us further in debt(if anyone is stupid enough to lend to us), is lunacy.

If the club's budget isn't good enough for Moyes, better for him to piss off now. I'd rather get someone like Adkins in or perhaps someone from la-liga who are used to managing teams with smaller budgets and getting them to play decent football.

Moyes has been here 10 years, and he has vastly improved the playing squad and kept us in a very decent league position year after year, but he's won bugger all, and doesn't look to have the ability to ever do so. He seems to bottle it far too often.

He also seems completely incapable of developing any of our young players. A club like ours cannot survive by not utilizing our youth system.

Sorry Joe: the Everton Encyplopedia is wrong, which makes me wonder about the knowledge of its editors. Snodin kept McDonald out of the team and was hailed as the finest rightback in the country. Did it ever occur to you that narratives are created on aesthetic grounds?

Sigh. I know he did, I was there. Nothing in the Encyclopaedia contradicts that, the point is that was stumbled on.

But back to he thread and the half term report reads:.

"Brian Oviedo - so far an underwhelming understudy to Leighton Baines"

Let's see what happens with the next three games and a potentially 6th round draw. Let us also see what happens in Europe over the next 3 weeks. I think we will get a good idea how our season will end and the likelihood of keeping hold of our top players. If Baines and Fellaini leave they will go with my blessing. They have given cracking service ( far more than that condescending c!!! Rooney, who still loves the club but he is just too good to play for us, yeah now f!!! Off!) as noted above they will get around 45 million, if we can get fees for Naismith and Heitinga then a manager would be looking at over 50 million to spend. Hopefully the banks will be happy with the additional tv money. As for the right back argument Snodin did ok but he was hardly top class in that role or any other. Harvey tried to sell him to Sheff Wed to fund Gascoigne, but they didn't want to know a la Newcastle who preferred Reid. We have never replaced Stevens, even 25 years on!

Anyone know what our debt actually is these days, last year it was something like £45mil? If Baines and Felli brought that in I wouldn't mind if we paid the whole thing off. Surely even Kenwright couldn't fail to find a buyer for one of those.
