Everton to tempt Chelsea icon?

13/02/2013 | Comments (60)
According to the Daily Star, Everton have joined the chase to sign up Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard, who will become a free agent in the summer.

The paper claims that David Moyes's club are willing to offer him a three-year deal on sliding-scale wages, if he agrees to stay within the pay structure, which has a top limit of around £80k a week.

But Lampard, 34, still hopes Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will make a U-turn and offer him a new deal.

So there's paper talk this morning about us offering Lampard a three-year contract. Funnily enough, I could actually imagine him playing for Everton. He always seems to score against us and I think he'd fancy coming here. Chelsea will probably have a rethink and renew his contract, but if that doesn't happen then we're in with a chance. Mind you, three years does seem excessive. I'd give him two.

Lampard – not a chance!

I would like to see him here though – even if just for a season.

Why not, Paul? Chelsea don't want him at the moment, and I think he wants to stay in England, so that narrows the field down to half a dozen possibles - which includes us. Plus, Moyes does like a good pro, no matter what their age, and Lampard is that for sure. Would Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Spurs or Arsenal offer him more than a one-year deal? I doubt it. We might, which could sway it for us. Seriously, if Chelsea don't have a rethink, I could see this happening.

Failing that I think he'd stay in London.

Get him nailed down now, break wage ceilings. His impact on the average age would be simply awesome and, just think, he'll be 37 in three years time.

What better signal to give that we are a senior team, and, nicely symbolic, strippling Barkley has just come back to watch the older guys play on the pitch.

I really hope not. Not that he hasn't been a great player, but this is totally one of those deals that fails more often than not; a good but aging player signed in the hope that he can give one or two years of good service. More likely is that we'd be locked in for a couple of years to view Lampard declining and struggling as part of a less talented overall midfield, and will a smaller squad that gives us less opportunity to manage his playing time.
Paul Ellam

Kev (#911)

His wage demands and the fact we won't be playing CL football are the two main reasons I can think of. If he does go to a non-CL team, it will be to one who is willing to pay him huge wages (LA Galaxy).

There aren't many (if any) players nowadays who are prepared to take huge wage cuts in order to just play and I don't see him being any different. Hope to be proved wrong though, I think he would be great for us.

Fellaini's wages are, I would hazard, not far off the ceiling. We get Lampard (can't imagine Christine B being too keen on buggering off stateside where her career will disappear into the dark depths of nowhere, like a Stuart Barlow shot into the Street end), Chelsea get first dibs on Fellaini. We're £20mill+ in pocket. Or someone at the club is.

You could be on to something there - use any deal that they might want for Fellaini in obtaining Lampard.
I mean, if Fellaini is gonna go anyway then we could try for that.
Think I would prefer Fellaini to stop however

The fact that Lampard has never had an ounce of pace, means that he can't lose it.

He is playing some of the best football of his career at the moment in a relatively poor Chelsea side.

He'd easily light up Goodison for three years if signed.

I can't see it happening though.

I can't see Frank Lampard wanting to leave his London's roots especially as his uncle "arry manages QPR not too far from away from Chelsea by the circle line. Or the other way to West Ham by the district line. Take your pick, Frank.

Paul (933): he won't go to the US because Hodgson has already said that would be a drawback for someone who wants to play for England - and Lampard is very keen to be in the squad for the World Cup next year.

As the report says, this is only a possibility if he lowers his wage demands to fit in with our system. I think he'd consider that. He strikes me as an intelligent but down to earth guy who, first and foremost, absolutely loves to play football. He's got to be loaded already, and I read only the other day that he's written a series of kids books that are going to be published over the next few years, so that will provide an income stream beyond his retirement.

He'd prefer to play for a London team competing in Europe, I've no doubt, but he may not get the choice. As I said, it's a question of which of the top seven teams would offer him two years or more. I can't see him fitting in at Arsenal or Lpool. So that leaves Spurs, Man U... or us.

Michael K - I see you've cut and pasted the first few posts here from another thread. A good idea, although it does make me look like a bit of a divvy, with the press report followed by me saying "Oh, have you heard..."

Guy (10) - I hereby award you "Simile of the Month"! Stuart Barlow will be coming round to yours next Thursday to present the prize.

Steavey, I'd take the overland from Chelsea Wharf to Shepard's Bush, then take the bus up to Loftus Road.

Fulham Broadway to Earl's Court, change to the circle line up to Notting Hill Gate and changing to the central line to Shepard's Bush is too much of a hassle.

He could take a helicopter of course but they don't do too well in the fog.

Hi Kev (#046), Yes, you're right: that can be a problem. At the same time, I didn't want to mess too much with what was submitted.

In your case, I added one word, "So..." at the start and left in the first sentence as it underlines the "paper talk" aspect of this thread. I thought that would neutralize the divvy feeling... but if it's still there, we'll have to come up with a better solution.

Hmmm... what about a big picture of Kev with arrow and "Star Contributor" in flashing blue lights?

Ha-ha! I like the idea of that, Michael. As long as it says "Star" and not "Daily Star".

Alternatively, you could leave as it. I am a bit of a divvy anyway!

Nick - or he could get the District line from Fulham Broadway to Embankment, walk a couple of minutes up to Charing Cross and get the Northern Line to Euston... where his train to Lime Street awaits. Obviously, if he wants to travel around Christmas time then he's going to have to go from London to Liverpool via Penzance, Coventry and Aberdeen. Bloody Virgin trains!

You're not wrong there, Michael. Mr Lyndon, he no like the jokes.

By the way, when I said earlier I couldn't see him fitting in at Arsenal or Lpool, I meant to add Man City. Unless Mourinho goes there at the end of the season, which he may do.

Phil - what is your problem? The only thing he has in common with Neville is that he's an experienced pro - otherwise, it's chalk and cheese. Lampard has the highest IQ of any PL footballer, I read somewhere. Neville, bless him, might just have the lowest.

We need power and pace in our midfield more than anything else, and Lampard would be a luxury we can't really afford.

Even if he didn't break the pay structure he would still be a top earner and a three year deal is too much unless we would hope to sell him on after squeezing something out of him for a season or two.

Karl Masters
078 Posted 13/02/2013 at 19:18:08
Lampard's recent run of good form is

a) because he is desperate to stay there and the writing is on the wall from Abramovich
b) in a team surrounded by young talented players
c) the final flourish in a fading career

We'd be getting a de-motivated ( except by money as has always been the case with him ), rapidly fading player losing his legs and surrounded by Neville, Pienaar, Distin, Jags, Howard etc, all the wrong side of 30.

Bad move. Shades of Ginola in my book. DON'T DO IT!

Richard O'Shea
081 Posted 13/02/2013 at 19:30:13
Doesn't seem like a Moyes signing — he tends to go for younger versatile players who have a sell on value. First thing he did when he arrived was get rid of has-beens like Ginola and Gazza. I can't see it, Tomorrow's fish and chip wrapping.

Si - what, we don't need someone who can score loads of goals from midfield? I beg to differ.

Karl: what are you on about - "recent run of good form"? He's been on good form for about 15 years!

Anyway, he'll probably stay at Chelsea, or go to Man Utd. But if he doesn't, I for one would love to have him at Goodison.

Rubbish story i'm afraid. Lamps is a cockney lad so will stay in London i'd imagine. Even at his age, we wouldn't be able to lure him. What incentive would we offer him and why us? believe it or not even if he does leave chelsea he'd still want to win things and go to a club that has ambitions. We don't end of!

It never ceases to amaze me how many people believe reports in the newspapers...Oh hang on it was in the Daily Star so technically that ain't a paper, but even allowing for that it’s complete bollocks…

Firstly, and it’s already been pointed out, he’s a London boy, secondly the fact that his bird (erm sorry fiancée) Christine Bleakley lives and works in London, so pick any London club (including Chelsea) for Lampard’s next home.

Kev Johnson
131 Posted 13/02/2013 at 22:27:52
It never ceases to amaze me, David (123), how people misunderstand how newspapers, magazines and television work. The Lampard story has been "floated" – that's the term for it. It's a possibility that is being publically entertained... for the entertainment of the public. The journalist who wrote it didn't necessarily "believe" it and he doesn't expect every reader to "believe" it. It's nothing to do with belief at all. He's saying, in effect, "What do you think about this?"

There's nothing idiotic about it, Alexander (118). There may be a germ of truth in it, I don't know – and neither do you. Who knows, maybe Lampard's agent is behind the story, just wanting to "put it out there" and see what the response is. That's sometimes how it works nowadays.

The line between fact and fiction, between news and entertainment is getting thinner and thinner – it's not as simple as "True or false?" It can be both or neither. I wish people would wise up about this and stop making themselves appear superior by slagging off journalists, without showing any understanding whatsoever of how the media industry works.

Oh yeah, and Barkely should go back to Sheff Wed!

Had it not been for Tim Cahill's unique scoring ability Moyes would have been exposed much earlier as being a dour unimaginative imposter. Since Tim left we have tried lots of replacements varying from youngsters of dubious potential to the aged living on past glories. None have come close to filling Tim's boots especially his match winning and Moyes face saving goals.

As Tim did previously, Frank would probably score enough goals to retain our place in the PL. Davy, BK, our shadowy or should that be shady board plus the IMWT brigade will be happy and contented. I long for a new messiah but at my age I can't wait too long.

Paul Ward
144 Posted 14/02/2013 at 00:27:02
I am with you Dick (140) about Moyes. I also think many Evertonians have the same play safe, stay up attitude. For some years now, it has been apparent under Moyes we will be safe from relegation, finish in the top half and never win anything. Because of financial restraints, lies at board level, and a manager who can't change his style.

Should we be thankful for any old player's that are not wanted by their own club? We have enough old men in this team now. I hear debates about players' form, like Howard, Heitinga, Neville, Hibbert and Distin... some of them are not out of form — they are finished. Them and Osman will be selected until they can't stand up and what is left of the once good young prospects will be thrown in at the deep end.

You can have Kenwright and Moyes with a guarantee of mediocrity or clear the whole lot out and gamble on success or failure. I would take a chance.

Anto Byrne
146 Posted 14/02/2013 at 01:38:37
Utter bollocks, we need young players in the mould of Fer or Vadis. A new manager, someone like Adkins, is not going to keep these old players at the club and settle for mid-table mediocrity.
Ian Allaker
149 Posted 14/02/2013 at 01:45:09
Dick, you could say that about a lot of teams. If Chelsea didn't have Lampard, if Liverpool didn't have Gerard, if Man U didn't have RVP, If Spurs didn't have Bale, if Swansea didnt have Michu.

The fact is Dick, Moyes signed Cahill and Arteta and Pienaar and a lot of other good players for buttons.

You say none have come close to filling Tim's boots... How many goals has Fellaini got? Fellaini is about the same age as Cahill when we signed him so has the potential to score more than Cahill.

Ian Allaker
150 Posted 14/02/2013 at 01:55:16
Paul, its not a case of playing it safe, its being realsitic. How many teams have broken the top 4 without spending vast sums of money? Moyes has came closest, so what makes you think blue Bill will find the man to spend no money and finish above Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd or Man City?

Why would you gamble when the odds are stacked so heavily against you?

I'd love to have Lamps until he's 37-38, if only to show Phil Neville what an actual veteran is capable of, not just barely keeping his head above water the way he is.

The thing is, of all the top clubs in England, I think Man Utd would be the only club that is both able and willing to take him. Much like when SAF got Owen in, he seems willing to give a job to an older player with a view of using him as a squadie.

Arsene would never buy someone that old, Spurs just aren't at that point, Man City - probably not either. Moyes would never sign him, using his age against him, whilst hypocritically playing half a squad that is not much younger if not older.

Excellent player but too old.
I always remember Tony Waddington at Stoke built a team around older players in the late sixties. People like George Eastham, Roy Vernon and Maurice Setters and it was very effective.
As a young Evertonian I new that we would only opt for the best young talent under Harry Catterick. Ball, Kendal and Harvey to name but three.
I suppose now we are like Stoke were then. What happened? What a shame!
