Moyes on Schalke shortlist

15/03/2013 | Comments (54)
Schalke 04 are reportedly eyeing David Moyes as a replacement for outgoing manager Jens Keller this summer, with Roberto di Matteo and Eintracht Frankfurt's Armin Veh also said to be among the candidates.

Moyes has spoken of his admiration for German football and intimated that he would be interested in managing in the Bundesliga.

And with his Everton future in doubt as his contract offer at Goodison remains unsigned, the drumbeat of rumours linking him with managerial vacancies is likely to increase.

Di Matteo and Veh would have a leg up on the Scot, though, in that they both speak German. A source is quoted as saying: "Ideally, they want a coach who can speak German. That is increasingly the way among Bundesliga clubs, and, if Moyes wants the job, he may have to follow Pep Guardiola's lead and learn the language in a hurry."

That should be enough for the first six months.

Gosh I hate to say this ... but I think I would rather go through another relegation battle (and win off course) than suffer another season under Moyes. I just do not get the media love affair with him... don't get it.. .probably because they see one game a year.

I think he will do well in Germany - he may even win something there because of the more level playing field. But time to start thinking of our own next manager. Roberto Martinez for me, but I fear he may get a 'bigger' offer.

Come on boys, lets not degrade this discussion into an anti Moyes insult fest. He doesn't deserve that treatment at all.

OK, we might be ready to see him leave and it's probably n the best interest of all concerned, but lets look at the bigger picture. He has done what he had to do, no more no less, but I haven't been shitting myself about relegation for the last 10 years like I did before (Brian Roberts – with respect I don't believe you really enjoyed the Coventry or Wimbledon years). There have been ups and downs, which is life as an Evertonian, but overall he has done a good job, and we are sitting we're we probably should in terms of wages spent.

So lets thank him for his job done and let him leave with dignity, no "Moyes out" banners and lets behave with a bit of class. Surely that's the best way to set up for a new manager?

Absolutely right Steve. Moyes has done a really good job for Everton, he won't go down as a legend because he hasn't a trophy to his name. But he has provided more good memories than bad. To say things like good riddance riddance to bad rubbish is just daft

If our board had backed Moyes in January I am sure this situation we are in would have been different.
Moyes knew he needed at least two more new signings to push on, its the board who should hang there heads in shame. Early season football was the best I have seen for years. What happened to the free flowing attacking football of a few months back??? I think Moyes has taken us as far as he can with the backing he gets from our board of muppets.

I hope Moyes decides to take a year out, that would really expose our Board. What manager worth his salt would take on the poison chalice that is Everton? Maybe it would force the fans to realise that it is the Board who are the cancer within our club.

The fans really need to man up and force Kenwright's hand. He is not the World's Greatest Evertonian by a long long way. Get him out; Bring back Moyes with a board who would back him and then let's see what he can do; he would do well, I'd bet.

Agree with you, he may not have been brilliant but I haven't woken up in cold sweats dreading relegation like I used to! For that, I thank him for what he has done and personally I hope he stays.
Whoever comes in will find they have the same restraints he has, although I do admit they may try to play a more positive way!

In conclusion, it is the Board that should be changed and it is they who I show my hatred towards.

Steve Jones
764 Posted 16/03/2013 at 11:35:34
Paul and Eric, totally agree , our complaints should be against the board for not backing us in January, that lack of activity signals the end not just for Moyes, but also our best players.
Just think about the pressure Moyes has tried to bring to bear - refusing to sign a contract unless its based on successful performance, and he has still been ignored by the board. His position is untenable now, it's fait accompli that he will leave if we get sixth or below, and I can't blame him.

However I do recall in the past, at this time of the season, trying to calculate where we would get 4 wins from to get to 38 points, and biting my nails watching for other teams results. Thank God I haven't had to do this in the last 10 years or by now I would be a quivering wreck - so lets let him leave without any protests.

I have to agree with the Moyes Out brigade. He has had a fair crack at it and consolidated the Blues in the right half of the league. What never ceases to amaze me is his dogged persistence in picking Phil Neville and Leon Osman week-in, week-out. What does he see in Naismith that nobody else can see?

Arrogance is the word that comes to mind. However, would we be posting these comments if our Mule-like centre forward had converted a mere 15% of the sitters he's missed? It's safe to say we would be looking at at least 10 more league points. WHAT IF?

Fail to understand the blame being pinned more on Moyes than the board, as many on this thread are saying. It's almost like people have given up hope of getting a new board/more investment, so have resorted to mudslinging at Moyes instead. Bit of perspective please- it's only some new investment that's going to lead to an improvement in fortune, not a change in manager

Steve #764 Thanks for echoing what I have been saying for ages.
This board do not invest at all, they give back a fraction of what they take and NEVER dip into their own money.

The FANS are the investors in EFC by paying to watch and buying merchandise.

The likes of Newcastles Ashley and Wigans Whelan put our multi millionnaires to shame.
DM definitely made a stand because of the lack of transfer funds and I for one do not blame him.
He has his best first eleven since he became manager and wanted money for two maybe three fresh faces to maintain our impetus...he has ambition and so do the fans but unfortunately this board are satisfied with survival and just take anything more as a bonus.

The castgation of Moyes by the baying idiots who write their vitriolic comments on the site are totally uncalled for.
I do not see Moyes as arrogant, I see him as a frustrated manager who wants the best from his team.
Earlier in the season we scored more goals from open play than we ever did under previous managers who relied on corners and free kicks to score goals.
We played really attractive, attacking football reminiscent of the 60's.
All we needed was a couple of decent signings and the sky could have been the limit.
Personally Im as disappointed and frustrated as Moyes obviously is.

We could have been contenders.... Charlie !!

Two points.....

Many have said that this is the best team we have had for a long time and this can be attributed to Moyes. He is meticulous in his planning and detail. All of those who want Moyes out should be clear that he has done more with less for 11 years.

Kenwright should do more to get investment and do what this team needs to move into the top 4. We are close.

It should be done with Moyes, although I would argue that much of the success Moyes has had over the years have resulted from Kenwright giving Moyes the run of the team.

I'm not part of the MOB brigade but I'm coming around to the idea that something needs to freshen up.

Moyes is a man I respect a lot, but media fawning over him makes me sick.

Today's media is all about how the City game proves he's the best man for the job due to getting the players up after last week. How about if he'd just got them up for the game that had a chance of silverware?

I have just watched his interview on the BBC website after yesterday's game and I am struggling with his use of the comment "Everton". I know he uses it quite a lot lately but it is almost as though the fans are seen as side of the club that have nothing to do with the football club.

I believe he will be gone 100% in the summer and I do believe the club has known this for a while, I think he is running his contract down so that the club don't need to pay compensation, an honourable thing to do.

Anyone who doesn't get what I am saying please watch the video.

A little hint that he's looking beyond this season, perhaps?

This rumour might actually have some legs to it.

For my sins I follow the Bundesliga and over the last 6 months there has been numerous articles/ reports linking DM and shortlists for Schalke 04.

In fact they have had 4 managers/interims since Felix Magath left in 2011, and there present manager/interim Jens Keller has lost 5 out of his first 12 games and of course they where knocked out of the Champions league by Galatasaray.

They have a massive Stadium play regular Champions league football or at least they expect too and have what appears money to burn, tempting for DM probably?!

If he does not perform however he might only get 6-9 months in the job.

If DM leaves who should we approach to replace him and thoughts folks?

Will I be shot down for suggesting Martinez?

I do agree with most threads that we need a management change and I do anticipate seeing Moyes go at the end of the season; however, I feel Moyes has been let down by the board for the lack of ambition and investment over the years, and probably more noticeable in January when a couple of new faces could have been the difference to us getting a CL spot.

My fear when Moyes does go is that he'll either take some key players with him or we'll lose the same players to other clubs; in a nutshell — the future for the club post the close-season looks grim!

Why is Kenwright always equated with not backing us?

There are two options
a. the club is sold to someone else who has money
b. the rest of the directors put in money - because for sure, Bill doesn't have it.

Now the other directors are here for . . . . well presumably making money. Forbid the thought that they are the directors for the love of the club. And please do not think for one moment that anyone purchasing this great club of ours will be doing it for the love of the team, the history, the people of Merseyside - they will also do it for making money. Now if a few of our more famous supporters put in few million each and a lot of our less famous supporters put in a few thousand each, then perhaps we would have a board that supported the club - but they would be just as strapped for cash as we are now having used all the money to pay the ones who currently own the club.

It is probably all Bill's fault that he is unable to presuade Woods and Earl to put more money into the club. But Company Law makes this a complicated business as more money from one of them will mean a greater holding for them - unless it is done as a loan, which is probably now illegal under UEFA Fair Play.

So blame Bill for not persuading his rich fellow directors to invest more of their money into a company where they are hoping to sell at a profit or
for not being able to persuade them to take a lower price and so not make as much money as they would expect from selling a premier league football club.

I do find it amazing that all (OK a sizeable number of) the people here on Toffeeweb would rightly expect to sell their house/car/x-box for less than what they thought it was worth because their neighbour/mate/friend though they should sell it to someone they liked rather for a lower amount than hold out for the highest price.

So blame Bill for not persuading Woods and Earl to accept less money - but not for him not investing.

And one question would smoke him out. Bill - if you sell the club for £150m - you will earn £37,5m. After deducting your initial investment, plus a reasonable level of interest, say 5% per year, would you be prepared to give that money back to the club as a gift? A no answer will mean he is in it for the money, a yes answer is he is being a custodian to take us from Agent Johnson to the promised land of wealth.

I think the 12 years of angst could equally be attributed to the long suffering supporters, Billl knew exactly what he was signing up for at the time, he hasn't helped himself or improved his image with some of the statements he is credited with.

If Moyes moves on then so be it, contrary to the media spin, the world will not end upon his departure, but equally any sucessor will be saddled with the same clueless set of individuals who masquerade as the Everton FC board.

I can just picture the hand wringing and shoulder shrugging from the board room over the summer break, heaven help us.

Christine Foster
364 Posted 17/03/2013 at 21:25:38
Richard, I doubt anyone would begrudge BK making a "bob or two" when he sells but we are talking about what amount.
If a company has been successful and made good and strong profits under a chairmanship tenure then he or she should be rewarded accordingly. As a major shareholder if you sell shares in a profitable business the you expect to make a profit on the purchase of your shares. No problem with that.

The difference is of course markets will only pay a price that is based on performance and it's future scope based on its asset value and potential. The lower the assets the less you would pay, the lower the potential, the less you pay.

This is the way it is because any buyer will tell you that their ability to raise capital in any new purchase of a company is directly related to the above criteria.

So, the greater the debt, the fewer assets the less the potential.

Hence the value of the business is reflected in the price, and that's where we are today, you can't sell a property that's in poor repair for top dollar, but our chairman and the board have based their value on a business that does not make a profit, has sold all it's assesses, cannot borrow the money it needs to improve its potential.

So what will the market pay? Obviously a lot less than what is being asked because it hasn't sold and doesn't look like being sold in the near future for the price being asked. (whatever it is)

There are those who think that given all our financial constraints that the club has managed itself well, the fact that those constraints where imposed because the club was not run well and the directors failed to bring in investment is somehow lost on many.

They have missed their gravy train because they gambled on DK and failed to manage the club well over more than a decade. Their tenure and responsibility.
Should they be rewarded for such? Well we are in the top league of the top clubs worldwide and in the running for a CL place, that's impressive, given the circumstances, but their is nothing underpinning the club any more, no assess, no funding, no access to further money, private or commercial. We are losing money year on year, commercially stagnating and time is running out for the manager and playing staff.

All in all heavy investment is required to underpin success. Whoever comes in has to first buy the boards shares to gain a majority interest because that how they would do it, to ensure they have a controlling interest for the level of their investment.

None of that money spent on shares makes any difference to the clubs status. That's just to remove the current encumbents.

Finally, what's fair and reasonable? The values we hear placed on the sale of shares of 125m may only reflect the value of shares that are available, not on the total number of shares available. For instance to get a controlling interest of 51% you would pay 63m based on the above valuation. That may only be the shareholding of a couple of people. However if the number quoted is a value placed by the board as a requirement to gain a controlling interest (125m) then the value is vastly inflated without realistic foundation.

It's debate able that the performance of the board over the years and the management teams have failed to deliver a future for the club. We are a do upper, the price we eventually get will reflect that. This game of chicken has to end soon otherwise the shareholders concerned risk losing all their investment and that's never going to happen.

Steven #409 and that is why Bob Kraft, owner of the most successful franchise of the last 12 years in American Football refuses to invest in the Premier League.

NFL has financial fair play - each team only has the same limit on the amount they can pay players. UEFA just keeps the historically rich clubs rich and the rest falling foul of the rules.

True enough, but the US can afford to do that as there is no competing league (or country interested in that sport). I favour financial fair play in principle (and as a blue), however if we (UK) or we (Europe) enact it it, China, Russia or Middle East would just make a market based league that sucked all of the talent there.

Obviously I don’t know for sure, but that is what I feel to be the main difficulty.

I would like Moyes to renew his contract for one year and take a huge pay cut.

Everyone appears to be conned into thinking Moyes is some kind of paragon of virtue. I don't buy it for a second.

If I hear him say 'wonderful chairman' one more fuckin time, I'm learning the rules to cricket. Moyes is the biggest reason Kenwright gets an easy ride. He's a fuckin fraud.

There are no rules to cricket, so it wont take long to convert. However you might struggle with the laws!! They can be rather confusing.
