Spurs wait while Osman's new deal stalls?

11/04/2013 | Comments (58)
Leon Osman is in talks with Everton over a one year extension to his current contract but, according to Dominic King in the Mail, the two sides are "at odds" over the terms of the deal, though "more talks are planned."

Meanwhile, Metro report that Tottenham are interested in the England international and are monitoring developments.

The paper suggests that Andre Villa-Boas could lodge a £6m or part-exchange bid this summer if Osman feels he needs a change of scenery with two years left on his current Everton deal.

it would be interesting to know what kind of money he's on. I imagine its got to be 50k a week or so?

Why is he stalling? he's hardly in any position to start demanding a huge pay rise. he's had a half decent season compared to his usual standards, and that's about it.

if he's not happy with the offer then let him go, and get someone young in to replace him it shouldn't be hard.

I've never rated Osman and I'm not going to start thinking he's a great player afer a half decent season for the first time since he's been at Everton.

Maybe something to do with the David Moyes situation?

It's hardly a matter of critical urgency for either player or club, at this stage.

Of course he wants an extension, at his age and skill level. Yes I know he's got ' quick feet ' etc but he's blowing for tugs at 3/4 time. 2 years down the track he won't have any more stamina and strength than he has now.

One year max.

I confidently predict this to be absolute bollocks.

He's already been offered a bumper 5 year deal

Patrick Murphy
770 Posted 11/04/2013 at 09:23:41
2 years is quite enough, this is where the club has gone wrong, too many ageing members of the squad. Which top 6 club is going to offer him a longer term contract? He's been a good servant to us but every player has a sell by date, If he has been offered a new bumper 5 year deal then that is even more ludicrous.

We shouldn't be offering players his age new deals while there is uncertainty over who our manager is next season.
A new manager might not fancy him at all.

England international now, so thats a bargaining tool for the agent.

Ossie wont want to go anywhere, he wont be going anywhere and a 2 year extension seems about right. Can imagine the agent pushing for 3, its the last big Prem contract Ossie is going to get.

He is a senior pro here now and has largely been great for us this season. With our central mid issues thank god he hasnt been injured, as we would have gone from light to wafer thin.

Thomas Windsor
780 Posted 11/04/2013 at 10:06:56
I think Ossie has been okay for Everton but it's true he's been puffing for tugs now after 60 minutes, we can all see it so why can't Moyes?

Time to cash in on him now.

At his age I think 2 years is plenty, no need to discuss an extention. I've never really been a fan if I'm honest, for me all he ever does is stand around waving is arms in the air demanding the ball because he thinks everything should evolve around him.

DM 747 - If he's on 50K I'd be surprised. I wouldn't want him on anymore than 30, 35 at a push.

Wouldn't be losing sleep over Osman with his contract extension either way, once again outclassed by Scott Parker against Spurs. Included in the current England squad due to a lack of real quality or young English players coming through. I would be looking at Maloney from Wigan as a ready made replacement.
John Shepherd
794 Posted 11/04/2013 at 11:27:49
He's 32 in May... or, in Moyes years, more like 36 [joke]. If he's stalling, I'd be surprised, probably the board not willing to discuss anything till the summer. Given the fact Distin only got a year extension playing in a more leisurely role in defence, I can't see Leon dropping any further back as age catches up, which is a pity, so I'd be surprised with anything more than 1 year.

I think he's bailed Bill and Moyes out this season with the two midfielders not coming off that we were allegedly trying to sign that Belgian fella with an odd name having trouble finding a stamp for his paperwork. Also the Dutch player having his X-ray of his knees swapped with Stubbsy's...

It's also been his most consistent season regarding injuries and minutes on the pitch – probably his best season that I can remember – but like I said pity it's come at the wrong end of his career.

This says more about the Moyes situation than it does about the Osman situation. Neville's pulled the plug, now Osman, one of his three favourites. Hibbo next, and the writing's on the wall.

How does this non-story say anything about Moyes, Roman?

It is a bullshit story from a bullshit paper, with no quotes and no "close sources state", yet somehow in your Moyes red mist, it gets turned from a bullshit Ossie story to a conspiracy theory about Moyes....

There is only one good reason to hang on to Osman, if we are going for Euro football, we need players developed by the club...and he is one of the few we have, him and Hibbert...we need them because of that UEFA rule only.
Phil Sammon
823 Posted 11/04/2013 at 13:57:23
I don't think we'd struggle in that department Bjørn.

I think you need four players developed at the club and you get a 25 man squad to go at.

Duffy, Barkley, McAleny, Springthorpe. Just lump anyone in there. We won't need to use them.

Let's just hope this is relevant at the end of the season.

Ernie Baywood
824 Posted 11/04/2013 at 13:54:46
I'm guessing there's something in this. Why would a journo wake up and think "who should I write about today? Maybe that little fella at Everton who has never so much hinted at leaving the club and no-one outside Everton would give a flying shite about"?

I'm getting a sense that we are starting to plan for the next few years and Moyes is involved. Playing Barkley, presumably telling Neville he will no longer feature, and planning on reducing the age of the squad in general.

My spidey senses say that Moyes is staying, Fellaini (and possibly Baines) has told them he's going, and the club has decided we can't challenge for Europe next year and should cash in and make a start on rebuilding.

Might just be bollocks, mind.

I suspect Toffeewebbers grossly overestimate the salaries of our players. To me, talk of Neville and Osman being on £50k a week is ridiculous. I suspect it`s no more than half that figure. I was told not long ago that Fellaini was the only player topping the £50k mark.

Probably Osmans agent (in a effort to get a better pay deal) trying to get some interest in the transfer market due to the newly found England international status. .

So that'll be QPR, Fulham or a 2 year deal at Everton then.

Richard 937 - you are of course correct, the 4m a year salary is too far fetched.

It is actually a more pedestrian 3.3m a year - or if you prefer about 63k a week - they poor guy must be counting the pennies and worried about his mortgage payments I fear...

Do the maths Doddy - average 50k per week for 15 well paid first team players = 37.5m. Wages for the club show we paid £63m in wages, so that fits quote neatly I would say.

Neville, Osman and one or two others that I can think about (maybe)!

Sam @980, spot on. Spurs have way more ambition than to be spending that type of money on an Osman type player.

I could see a newly promoted club spending £2M to £3m for him, or perhaps a Stoke or a Fulham, but certainly not Spurs.

Whoever is managing Everton next year will need to be more active in the transfer market than Moyes to move things on at Everton. There isn’t enough value in selling an experienced and influential player for a few million quid; he is one to keep.

Right now, we need a manager with the acumen to know when an Everton player’s value is at its highest and sell them for as much as we can get in order to buy players yet to reach that point. This time last year it would have been unthinkable to move Jelavic on for £10M, now it’s only unthinkable because we couldn’t get that amount.

Moyes and the coaching staff have done a brilliant job with Baines, and Coleman is heading in the same direction now. If we can keep Baines for another year then we will be looking at silly money from one of the rich clubs.

Fellaini is the cash cow, great player on his day but erratic.

As said, he's 32 next month. He's got two years left. I'd leave it at that. Anyone who thinks Spurs or any other established PL club would pay £6M for him also read Enid Blyton.

Maybe Moyes is changing his ideas; maybe he doesn't want another Neville situation. Was skippy here one season too long?

We have historically kept players past their sell-by date: Radcliffe, Sharp, Campbell etc.
But, it's the Daily Mail????

Roman Sidey
065 Posted 12/04/2013 at 11:59:42
What's to say Baines won't decline between now and then, Ross, and we'll be saying, "Should' ve sold him last year." You are right though. The manager needs to know when to sell on.

Okay then, I was not aware we had so many youngsters who had been here for more than 3 years... well then it could be curtains for both Osman and Hibbert for all I care... and we should be grateful for their contribution to the squad during their years here.

And when I say European football I meant Europa League, cos' it's probably the only competition we still have a chance to reach... unless we let RS overtake on the table... let us all pray for more RS defeats this season.

Steve Brown
079 Posted 12/04/2013 at 12:55:59
Don't buy this, probably a story planted by his agent because Everton won't discuss a contract extension at this time - after all he's 32 in May and still has two years left on his contract.
Ross Kerry
080 Posted 12/04/2013 at 13:01:53
No guarantees that he won't Roman. It’s my opinion that with another similar season Baines will be worth far more but a good manager would now how much of a gamble that is, taking into consideration the possibility that an injury could change things completely. The squad is too small, if a good chunk of Baines money could go towards correcting this then maybe he should go to.
Selling Ossie for £3M (I can’t imagine we’d be offered more) would only weaken the squad.

Every player is available if the price is right. That's because the board of directors at Everton won't be benevolent and put their hands in their pockets and give the manager some extra money above what is expected.

Harry Redknapp wanted Neville at Spurs, lazy journos apply the same scenario to today, oh how about Leon Osman, he's a decent midfielder, Spurs must want him..

Maybe they want him so that Daniel Levy can sell him back to us in a year for an inflated price after Moyes' realises he's cocked up.
