New man won't be on Moyes's wages

It's not clear what they have to support the suggestion but the Mail report that Bill Kenwright will likely only offer Everton's next manager half of the £4m salary David Moyes has been drawing on his current contract.

The paper raises the usual three suspects as the leading candidates for the position: Malkay Mackay, Neil Lennon and Robert Martinez, whose stock rose higher yesterday with Wigan's FA Cup triumph over Manchester City.

Well cosidering that Moyes has been in the job for 11 years and has probably had performance based rises as well then it's fairly obvious that a new guy would not be on the same pay unless we were recruiting someone like Mourhino.

I'd like to see managers pay be largely performance-based. Whilst it would be a bit harsh (and probably wouldn't attract managers) to link it to trophy success, it would be relatively straight-forward to link it to final league placings.

Say for example, £1 million per year base salary (I'm sure they could scrape by on that), with an extra £100,000 per final league place. So if you finish 20th you get £1.1 million in salary, if you finish mid table you get £2 million, if you win the league you get £3 million.

Obviously the club could afford to pay these extra bonuses as they'd get better league placing money. Makes sense to me.

If I won the reported annual sum on the lottery it would set me up for the rest if my life. I've always found the money in the premier league a bit distasteful. But now I'm completely sickened by it. Imagine the football infrastructure we could have in this country if wages were realistic.

A man on an annual £4m a year lauded (wrongly) for his loyalty by people who can only dream of that kind of money over a lifetime.

I know a few loyal Evertonians who can't afford to run a car on their wages. I wonder if, as the media says we must, they'll give Moyes a standing ovation before he jumps in his chauffeur driven maybach and pisses off up the East Lancs.

What a surprise, NOT!

I am of the opinion that a Manager should not be paid less than the players so if you have the likes of Fellaini on 75k then why on earth would you not pay that to the manager who is the most important person at the club?

Kenwright will look to the cheap option. Step forward Mackay the choice of the fans he will have you believe.

To be honest, it would have been disgraceful if the new man had walked straight into those astronomical wages. Yes, managers probably should be the best paid member of staff, but that rarely happens.

Save £35k on managers wages
Fellaini goes. £75k
Heitinga fucks off £50k
Neville off the books £35k

That's around £195k p/w and £25 million in transfer fees. Not a bad kitty for the new gaffer. Or a handsome pay day for the board.

More likely the latter Phil.

And here lies a big problem. With the wages Moyes was (IS) on, this Board could go and get a top manager from abroad or even a top manager from this country (eg, Laudrup). I can't see why many managers would turn down the wage Moyes was on to boss a big Premier League club with a good transfer budget.

There could be £40M available after player sales so why couldn't that be available for the next man if there's so much more money coming in from TV rights next season? Where's that extra TV money going to go?

John Gee - "Imagine the football infrastructure we could have in this country if wages were realistic."

A la Germany.

Money appears to corrupt most things in the UK, top 1% and all that. Sadly the next tranche of TV money will end up offshore or sat in the players' car park. £4M a year for Moyes from a club that hasn't got a pot to piss in, is frankly obscene.

I watched Laudrup and Mackay with great interest last night on MotD, both men came across well and more importantly when questioned by Lineker both didn't rule out the possibility they would manage Everton. Lawrenson was still a tool by the way.

Moyes obviously didn't start his career at Everton as 13th best paid manager in the world (I guess he has moved further up that league now!) so it is obvious a new manager would also have to work his way up the pay scale too. Man City can afford to pay of £7-25m in compensation, but if we got in a dud on £3m a year and a 2-3 year contract we would be stuck with them. I'm not sure what Martinez (my personal choice) is on at Wigan, but I'm sure he could get a substantial pay rise at Everton and still be on a lot less than Moyes, initially anyway.

I really like Jeremy Benson's performance based pay idea. Would like to see something similar with the players too. I think Bosingwa would owe QPR money this year!!!
