Pereira next Everton boss – claims A Bola
It has been suggested that contracts were established between his agent, Christophe Henrotay (who also represents Kevin Mirallas), and the Blues and it is also claimed that Pereira signed a pre-contract agreement with Everton two months ago.
The coach has come to the end of his contract with Porto and having won the league title this season, it is now claimed he will come to Everton to replace Moyes.
Pereira has been linked with the post before and the report in A Bola, a Portuguese sports newspaper, suggests a deal is in place for Everton to appoint the 44-year-old this summer.
The article also claims that both parties can keep their options open, in case either side decides to pull out of the deal.

This is the 2nd biggest decision facing the Club since the split of 1892. If it is true and it actually works ( crashes us through the glass ceiling ) I for one
would forgive Bill all his cockups except one.... that being the Kings Dock... that is unforgivable in any way shape of form.

Therefore it must be TRUE.

Also a great idea to keep the backroom staff as intact as possible since this guy doesnt know the premiership - I suspect he would bring his own assistant, but the rest of the staff would be expected to advise, challenge and support him.
Does sound too sensible and logical - but if true congratulations to Kenwright and Elstone for their foresight.
391 Posted 22/05/2013 at 13:26:22
Apparently he was trying to sign Mirallas when we got him which suggests he has an eye for talent.
“Portuguese people are strategic, with a huge work ethic” he said. “I do not have the talent to speak, in public, as finely as they do.
“Andre is very expressive, but I am different. I am a quiet person.
“I define myself differently: I am a tactical coach. For me, that part of the game is not so important.
“It is not part of my personality.”
“I like my teams to have total control, of the ball, of the game,” he said.
“I like to see my teams pressing very aggressively, very high up the pitch.
“The important thing is the balance between the attacking and defensive elements, but pressing high is the best way to defend. We have had the best defence in Portugal for the last two years.”
“There are two parts to our job,” he said. “One is to find the young players before other clubs do.
“And then the other part is to help develop them.
“We look in countries where players tend to have creativity in their game, and then the coach’s job here is to teach them the tactics, the organisation, that you need to thrive in Europe. The players who move on take most of the credit, but for the coaches it is proof that we are doing our job.
“It is an honour for me to have worked with so many fantastic players. It is a point of pride to see them move on, to a better league, because it is a mark of my work.
“But the problem is that every year the best players are sold; we cannot build a team. Every year, we start again.”

Will BK appoint a Director of Football who will act as a buffer between he and the manager (somebody to blame if it goes tits up?

Periera's league record over two seasons is - won: 47, drew: 12, lost: 1.

If, as alleged, there is a clause for either party to back out of the agreement then Kenwright will orchestrate some sort of last minute contractual problem that just couldn't be resolved (see the Leroy Fer transfer), and end up promoting from within. He can then make all the desired noises about the club having the ambition to employ a high-profile foreign manager, but that it just didn't work out. While that may sound far-fetched to some, I think Kenwright is a willing exponent of smoke and mirrors when it comes to the running of the club.
I don't know if I would want Pereira anyway - I mean what do we really know about him? A friend of mine (a football trader) who follows the Portuguese league relatively closely said that Porto have by far the best squad of players in the league (explaining their dominance), capitulated horribly to Malaga in the Champions League, and that the Porto fans pretty much despise him.
For me, these are cynical times I'm afraid.

Pereira was my choice from the beginning but I have experienced too many false dawns with our club to get giddy just yet!
When I see him at Finch Farm I will let a smile form - the potential with him in charge is great, and exciting.
Maybe we aren't that far off the top four after all?

Take a good look in the mirror give yoursleves a slap and remind yourselves, this is Everton we are talking about with Kenwright calling the shots. The nearest he get's to a bit of foreign flair is a chicken tikka pie!
Our last manager was brought in from Preston f.c., before that another jock, couple of old englishmen has been's and so on. Call me a pesemist but I just can't see Bill opting for an exciting trendy foreign manager, only a local based brit.

Vítor Pereira tem pré-acordo com o EvertonPor José Carlos de Sousa e António Casanova
A- A A+

Roughly
566 Posted 22/05/2013 at 18:12:37
It would be a much bigger change than Martinez or one of the current players / ex-players that have been mentioned a lot.
Kenwright has said already that he wants someone who can continue Moyes' work and take it to the next level.
Either way - my first choice (McCall) has never been mentioned by the club or the bookies and my worst case scenario (RB) has never become more than just a horrible rumour.
I'd rather have Neville, but whoever Kenwright picks I will get behind.

I don't recall his name EVER being mentioned in Moyes replacement debates ..... not suggesting he's slipped a few new names onto the boards to get the bandwagon going or anything.

573 Posted 22/05/2013 at 18:20:45
There are 8 candidates on the shortlist for the EFC manager's job 3 internal have already been interviewed: Weir; Stubbs and Neville. The club would like to interview 5 external candidates??? Does that mean they've applied? Who knows!
They include Pereira; Martinez; Laudrup and 2 not so good others others.
Apparently Everton supporters have inundated Bill Kenwright's office with their views and he is aware of their views.
Pereria is apparently currently favourite!
It's a night for prayers.

Neville has his weaknesses but from what I can see he's a true proffessional, has a genuine connection with the club, will work hard to suceed and provide Vitor with the necessary help settling in, communicating with the players etc.
I also think he's a good bloke who knows the top job is too soon for him at themoment so what better start in coaching than assistant at Everton? Loads of exposure to what a big job takes without the pressure, plus will help provide some continuity if thats needed too.
Downside? Not too much continuity please....

"Not sure if it's the right choice, he worked with Vilas Boas and took the main role in FC Porto when Vilas Boas left for Chelsea.
In 2 years he won 2 championships ... But in Porto the difficulty is to lose national titles :-)
Their football is not a joy for the eyes and this year they had the star of luck.
From what I see from Everton you need a coach to bring young players to the main team and don't invest too much in players."
Doesn't prove anything either way , just thought you might like to hear......

New arrival: Everton are set to appoint Vitor Pereira as new boss (Picture: Getty)
Everton are set to appoint Porto coach Vitor Pereira as their new manager after agreeing terms on a two-year-deal.
As Metro revealed two weeks ago, 44-year-old Pereira was among the top targets to replace David Moyes at Goodison Park after he joined Manchester United.
And now reports in Portugal claim that Pereira has verbally agreed to move to the Premier League on a two-year contract, with Abola suggesting the deal will be signed imminently.

We need someone who will hit the ground running; we can't afford bedding-in time or babysitting a rookie. No we would be better off with Neville and Stubbs to be honest — at least we know where we are with them two .I can't believe the hype... probably none of you calling him to come here would know him if you fell over him. Big gamble to say the least.
597 Posted 22/05/2013 at 18:48:57

Don't be silly. Stewart McCall was a good player for but he hasn't featured highly in fan's wish lists.
I still can't get over the way we debate choices on this site and then, out of the blue, someone comes ignoring all previous discussion and suggests a complete non-starter. Why??
Read previous threads before you post what I'm sure are well meant comments. This debate has been going on for almost 2 weeks and we don't need new candidates at this stage!
603 Posted 22/05/2013 at 18:47:21
But two things jumped out reading his profile on wikipedia, one is it says he signed a pre contract with Everton so it MUST be true! It's on wiki!!!? And second it says he crashed out the champions league at group stage, then straight out of the Europa cup, then out of the Portuguese domestic cup.....this guy sounds like Moyes ideal replacement!!!? ......just better looking
In all seriousness the only issue is limited experience at top level 2 years for Porto who aren't in a difficult league) and how much of this success is down to him (or was it more from what he inherited??)

Not a mercenary in-it-for-the dosh or to gain a foothold in the premier league and gone after 3 years.
EFC is not a quick fix.
612 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:08:42
Tony, who would you like to take over then?
613 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:07:11
Anyway, how about Andy Gray. I know he sounds like a closet red and acts like a get but it's better than Rafa who is a CONFIRMED red and IS a get.
615 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:11:36

You say that it would be a big gamble, and I'd tend to agree.
But I'd argue that this is a time when taking a risk is actually a safer option than the "safe option". To change our approach while building on the relatively solid foundations laid by Moyes, rather than treading water in the same way.
"He could be another Christian Gross"; really so could any foreign manager. Just as any British manager we hire could be another Mark Hughes or Gary Megson.
Pereira's just won his second title, while remaining unbeaten. He states a desire to play an attacking, possession based, pressing game.
A "safe pair of hands" isn't going to take us anywhere. A well regarded young manager with a record of success abroad could certainly backfire, but the chances are no greater than any of the other candidates listed; and haven't we been saying for a while that we'd prefer to fail while reaching for something higher, showing some ambition, than being satisfied with the safely mediocre?

I have stated here, on a few threads, that Pereira doesn't inspire me all that much - I have been living in Portugal for some time and I have watched Porto on a number of occasions, but - yes, but! - the recent news on a possible "internal solution" makes me hope that Pereira will get the job.
The Portuguese League ended on Sunday, and so, if there's any truth to these reports, an announcement should be imminent.

However, having supported the blues for almost 50 years I hardly dare get my hopes up and so I await a hefty kick in the slats from Kenwright. The man is just cheap and I can't trust him to make any decision in the best interests of the club. I do hope that for once he can prove me wrong on this most important occasion which is a pivotal moment for the club.
641 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:54:26
I'm kind of hoping that as Pereira is out of contract then we might have a rare situation where the cheap option coincidentally ends up being a good option, too!
642 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:15:25
I am surrounded by other season ticket holders.
At the last home game the talk amongst those sitting around me was who the new manager might be and their preference.
One of them stated that Pereira had been a guest of Kenwright on two occasions at Goodison this season.
And he speaks very good English.
I posted this on another thread and asked if anyone could confirm this.
Hopefully, this article is the confirmation I was looking for as it all seems to fit.
Add Neville as part of his team.

644 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:31:54
It is hard to compare Pereira to any of the backroom staff at Goodison as Pereira has a record as a manager and the others don't. To win two championships in a row and to go unbeaten all season tell's me he isn't a bad manager and to add to that that he likes his teams to attack which makes that statistic all the more impressive.
I think if the club recruit from within then we'll be slugging it out with a lot of effort and commitment but technically we won't improve and I wouldn't expect the team to improve in being able to retain the ball. Laudrup was my first choice but this guy was my second so I certainly won't be complaining if we got him.
646 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:38:38
This Bielsa guy is the one that really excites me, described by Pep as one of the best coaches of the last 20 years, great tactician, doesn't need lots of money to spend to be successful and loves coaching and developing youth. Like Ross says, he will be available on a free and think he's tailor made for Everton.
Come on BK! Lets get this Bielsa on Board

I just know Kenwright will fuck up. I don't think a rookie or someone with no English football experience will suffice. Winning the title in Portugal and trying to compete in the EPL are worlds apart. The pace and physicality of our League can frighten some managers and players to death. Bringing an unknown quantity to Everton FC is a huge risk a massive gamble. If you can't see that then you are dumber than I thought, Doddy.
If we are playing the "Who Do We Want?" game and we keep it within sensible boundaries, it would have to be Martinez for me as he is available and has Premier League experience. He may be not ideal but better than internal recruit or untried foreign coach... That okay for you guys?
650 Posted 22/05/2013 at 19:48:53
Proper succession planning for any SME business is critical if the owners (who are generally the founders) want it to outlive them and form part of their legacy. In that respect, Everton is no different on all levels.

I see where grumpy Tony Marsh is coming from to an extent, as a foreign coach with no experience of English football is always a risk. He could sink or swim. A Wenger or a Gross?
But he has already established himself a fine reputation. If you were a top young player looking for a move to a top English club - which one out of Vitor Pereira and Alan Stubbs would be most likely to tempt you to Goodison?

692 Posted 22/05/2013 at 21:50:25
That's my main concern...perhaps he's simply using Everton to negotiate a better deal at Porto

Anyone know what he's on at Porto, what they pay their top managers? I know Chelsea had to cough up Eur 12.6m in compo for AVB a couple of years back (only to sack him 6 months later), but didn't think they were on a par with the Prem wage-wise.

I have watched Everton for some 60 years and through most of that time we were in fact one of the big clubs in England — at times the top club. But, at present, we are no longer one of the big clubs and certainly not in any position to get near being the top club without a long term solution to the financial/business model so sadly deficient at present. Whatever we think of Mr Moyes he has worked within these limited circumstances exhibiting some degree of realism and understanding of the situation and the board have been very fortunate that he was able to achieve what he did in spite of their dreadful deficiencies. Everton need someone who is acutely aware of the present situation and the constraints within which he will have to work; be mindful of the wider culture of the club and try and marry the two.
i just have a feeling that many are seduced by the "glamour" appeal of a foreign appointment in the hope of emulating someone like Wenger at Arsenal - but Arsenal were not in the same situation as Everton of today! Pereira may well be a good appointment — who knows — but he would need someone like Phil Neville (or someone similarly experienced and aspirational with real insights into the realities of the present Everton situation) to be alongside him. This stage of Everton's history should be one of slow consolidation not risk taking for mistakes now would be truly catastrophic. After all it was a young relatively inexperienced Scottish manager who "saved" Everton from sinking into the mire of mediocrity that threatened during the Walter Smith regime. Of course we finished sixth in the league but it is still a brittle position needing very careful -– and committed – long term handling to maintain it or improve on it.

I'm just expressing an opinion. I don't think for a second that McCall has ever been in the running, but he certainly should have been. I've mentioned him on other threads and I'm not the only one.
He has played for the club and at a time when we were competing for trophies. He is a proven winner and has taken Motherwell to the Champions League. Can't believe he wasn't in the running to be honest.
787 Posted 23/05/2013 at 00:16:43
From Wiki ...
His leadership is based on serious methodology and very formal conversation that seems awkward and odd for players, especially in the beginning. However through these methods of obsessive formality he has managed to convince his players to play attacking football in all teams he has coached. Athletic Bilbao's striker Fernando Llorente said in an interview "At first he seems tough and he may even annoy you with his persistence and don't-take-no-for-an-answer resilience, but in the end he is a genius. he convinces you to keep working and running and it can be seen in his teams' games and practices. He knows more than anyone in the world, he is elite. Once you get used to him you love him."[27] Barcelona's Pep Guardiola called him the "best manager in the world" in 2012.[28] 3–3–1–3 is his signature formation.

However with his odds at 400-1 ( Roughly the same odds as Elvis returning to Earth in a spaceship on Doomsday ) I'm tempted to call the chances of him being in the dugout on the opening day of the season a bit of a long shot.
Pereira is a very satisfactory 2nd choice.

840 Posted 23/05/2013 at 09:43:51
Now AVB is at Spurs, another club with a huge squad and one of the world's top young player Bale, What has AVB actually done? Do you get the picture, Steve? Can you grasp what I am saying.
Everton does not have the massive spending power or squads of Chelsea and Spurs yet you and others are prepared to hand the job to an unknown guy from Portugal just because it looks trendy on paper... How is what Pereira has achieved any different from Lennon at Celtic?
843 Posted 23/05/2013 at 09:52:12
Tony, I agree with you that any internal promotion would be a non-starter for me too, but I'm no more convinced with Martinez, a man with a poorer record than Bruce and Jewel and who has just taken Wigan down, than I would be with Perreira. However, Pochetino (sp) , despite the language barrier and no Prem experience, managed to improve Southampton's fortunes so maybe Pereira might well cut the mustard. Especially if you believe the old adage about football being a simple game, i.e:- Pass the ball to the same coloured shirt, score more than the opposition, let the opposition worry about YOUR game, and not the other way around. I might apply myself...

On a more general point, an Evertonian named Steven Taylor has just shouted out for Pereira on the BBC Sportsday Live page. How come I never see anyone from TW on that page? Has anyone here every been on it?

They got it right with Ferguson retiring / Moyes taking over at utd.
871 Posted 23/05/2013 at 10:57:19
As I understand it, they have their own system of working which ensures that bets are continually placed, so shortening and lengthening the odds (almost at random) helps with that. Someone (I can't remember who) explained it all on TW recently. on.
I tell you what, I could do with some movement on the managerial situation. All this gossiping is a bit too girlie for my tastes!

I agree, I'd love to see it sorted out straight away. I can be arsed with all the rumors and speculation continuing through the summer!
912 Posted 23/05/2013 at 13:46:14
He would be a very dodgy choice as his pedigree is very short albeit a success in Portugal where many teams are really poor outside of Porto,Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.
Communication will be a problem until he learns good English and it is likely he will bring in his own men so expect some staff and players to be on their way soon.
If he comes then lets at least cut him some slack for a while after all Moyes got a lot of slack for 11 years.

209 Posted 24/05/2013 at 08:33:48
AVB had issues adapting to our game but, reading some of the background to his time at Porto, Pereira was brought in as AVB's assistant exactly because AVB was technically weak. Pereira was the brains of the outfit and Villas Boas was the face, charm and charisma. If thats true it could well explain the failure at Chelsea...not because a Portuguese manager would struggle in the Prem...just that AVB wasnt that sharp.
According to the Portuguese press if Pereira has an issue its that he doesnt have the gravitas that the locals over there like in their managers...he's a quiet and a thinker...thats the basis of the issues with the Porto fanbase. Tactically its also said that he doesnt have much of a plan B if his style of possession football doesnt work and he can look a 'bit lost' when it all goes wrong. That said though the stats speak volumes...its not 'all gone wrong' for him very often. Quite the opposite.
We need change, thats for definite, and I cant see another shortlisted candidate with Pereiras qualifications. Simple as that for me.
