Everton could have to pay Wigan £5million for Roberto Martinez
The paper claims that Martinez will tell Whelan early this week that he wants to move but the veteran chairman won't allow him to go without a fight — or a pay-off. The Wigan boss is on a rolling contract so Whelan holds the upper hand in negotiations over him when Everton come calling. Whelan may want as much as £5M for Martinez.

My preferred choices are Laudrup or Zola. Laudrup is unlikely; however, if Watford don't win today, surely Zola's going to be considered.

If he does have time still left on his contract he would have to give notice to Wigan in accordance with the contract (which is unlikely to be more than 12 months). If we wanted him early then we would have to pay his old salary for the period we wanted him to come sooner. This would also likely affect the salary package that we would agree with Martinez as it reduces his value to us. i.e. we would pay him less than otherwise in order to partially recover the costs we have to bear. This is why it made sense for Moyes to arrange it so that he would be out of contract at the end of the season. He can then be taken on by Man U without his future employer having to pay off his old employer - so no negative pressure on his own salary.
And Peter Laverty - we got no compensation from Utd for Moyes because Moyes' contract simply expired. So there was nothing to compensate for.
584 Posted 27/05/2013 at 08:06:19
I wonder if this explains the current inertia in appointing a new manager - is Kenwright trying to scrape together some money, and also (quite rightly) trying to avoid being taken to the cleaners by I-Broke-My-Leg-Whelen?
I was a Martinez fan but his reluctance to either piss, or get off the pot has left me doubting his drive and ambition to be honest. Look at Moyes, he has left for a bigger job and didn't twat about - and why would you?

I think it's bullshit.
I could live with a it, but still not at all sure Martinez is the right guy for the job.

Vitor Periera is out of contract, better, more successful and available, Bill Kenwright the choice is so simple even you can't mess this up, over to you.
604 Posted 27/05/2013 at 09:07:35
Please, Bill, Pereira: 67% win rate, plays attractive football, has a winning mentality, and free from 1 June — no-brainer for me.
605 Posted 27/05/2013 at 09:02:34
Personal choice would be Di Matteo. Saw a lot of his style at MK Dons snd he is terrific tactically knows how to play decent attacking passing football, exactly what we need.

612 Posted 27/05/2013 at 09:22:16
If we want to go to the next level, then we should look at a successful European-based manager who has the right 'philosophy' regarding how to play exciting football. Favre, Pereira or Jorge Jesus are the type of calibre of manager that should only be considered.

Pereira would cost £0m
Am I missing something???
Surely it would make sense to go for the better qualified man who won't cost a penny!!!
This club makes me sad.
630 Posted 27/05/2013 at 10:03:25
Vitor Pereira is the man for the job, with a much greater record and a reputation for excellent attacking pressured football and developing the youth ayers which we know is essential for us with our lack of funds. Barkley would benefit from an experienced manager with excellent youth management, I think he can be a key player for us next season.
632 Posted 27/05/2013 at 10:04:17
Nobody will ever convince me Roberto is the right man for Everton anymore than Davey`s departure was not a plan put in place months ago.
But then, this is BPB we`re dealing with and we know he has the club in his heart-even if t`s not so near the surface as those crocodile tears he`s fond of shedding!

I want a manager who will give the club impetus. I'd take Mackay over Martinez even though he's unproven in the premiership because he's on his way up. I'd definitely prefer Pereira though.
If Martinez, Stubbs or similar is appointed I'll become more of a passive fan - because I don't want the pain which is likely to follow. If they do well GREAT! But I'm not convinced. Neville I'd watch with intrigue.
638 Posted 27/05/2013 at 10:18:49
Then again, this is Everton, the club with the new badge so anything's possible.
As others have suggested, I don't see what the big deal is about Roberto Martinez. I don't get why he's apparently rated highly. I see several other better candidates - Pereira being at the top of the list - who potentially would cost far less.
With respect to Whelan wrangling over compensation, the bloke's being touting RM for a bigger club for the past couple of years - so do one.

I await with bated breath, our next important decision, which for 24/7's benefit is our

Appoint someone who knows how to win, not some guy who loses every week and only managed to win 6 games a season at Wigan.
How the hell is Martinez a good manager is beyond me. Utterly speechless at his potential appointment. Please no no no.

917 Posted 27/05/2013 at 19:18:14
To be fair we don't know if he was ever offered the Everton position. Doddy's Wigan sources seem to be indicating Martinez has been in the frame for some months.

I know: let's spend it on a new badge... or on new players and get a bloke in to do the job who is out of contract. Periera will do for me!

Everton aren't quite at the Lidl or Aldi level, but they are no better than Kwik Save in terms of where they can afford to shop.

096 Posted 28/05/2013 at 03:24:30
I'm going with here say cods wallop....
But it's does have me thinking as Kendall was the manager a few years back...
Did he cut all his ties with the club?
I sure hope we don't go for Martinez, I understand that he has PL experience, but it's four years of relegation experience.
It will be like going back to the Walter Smith days...
Why would we want to do that.
101 Posted 28/05/2013 at 04:05:24
It will be David Moyes and his team who picks out his successor and determines his 'compensation'.
Blue bill knows fcuk all about choosing a football manager.

If you are a blue stop this nonsense NOW ! Its bad enough waiting for an announcement from the club without you spouting your bullshit.
My guess is you are either a Manc (red) or one of satans slaves from across the park just trying to stir it.
Either evidence your stupid claim or piss off........
196 Posted 28/05/2013 at 11:05:27
Wigan's starting line up in the F.A. cup final cost less than Fellaini!!
He knows the opposition before the season starts, that's got to be an advantage over someone coming in from Europe.
I am sure he would bring in a couple of very good players from that Wigan side, and his free signings have been a revelation. Better than almost anyone in the League for value - this is the market we operate in, except we got McRooney back!
Okay, his defensive record was shite, but don't you think Baines, Distin, Jagielka & Coleman can shore up the back? Heitinga is off this summer, and we can probably get £5m plus £50-60k a week wages freed up, that gets you International quality, not a freebie from the lower Leagues.
It looks like Fellaini will be going, and even Neville was earning the wages of three Wigan first team players.
People really need to start looking at the finances involved, and how much the guy can motivate his team to play, will the players go through brick walls?
It sure looked like they were motivated when they gave us a footballing lesson at Goodison!
His free signings matched that City team man for man. He said he sent them out to play without fear : "Sin Miedo. It means "without fear" in English and is the underlying principle Roberto Martinez applies to football.
Something that has been lacking for the past 11 years if you ask me.
245 Posted 28/05/2013 at 13:01:50
Another point, I live in South West Wales, the media have said Laudrup is staying at Swansea. He's not happy, he hasn't spoken to Jenkins face to face since their final game. Many think he is on his way.
249 Posted 28/05/2013 at 13:12:26
All this ( justified ) hoo-haa over the crest is allowing this sorry situation to come to pass almost without comment.
Damn you Everton!
253 Posted 28/05/2013 at 13:21:02
If we went down, we would be screaming for somebody who has Everton in his heart to bring us back.
256 Posted 28/05/2013 at 13:19:25
The audacity of these blokes is amazing. Moyes, Martinez, Laudrup. They've all had a go of holding the respective clubs to ransom.
