Pereira remains in the running for EFC post

30/05/2013 | Comments (71)
Though Roberto Martinez appears to be the front-runner, Porto boss Vitor Pereira - a favourite among Everton fans - is still very much in the running for the Everton manager's role.

The 44 year-old is very keen on the position according to this report by Greg O'Keeffe in the Echo and has met with Bill Kenwright already.

Pereira, who has led Porto to two league titles, shares an agent with Everton stat, Kevin Mirallas.

I'm one the few that don't want him. He's done nothing to say he'll succeed in the Premiership. Porto are always going to be in with a shout of winning the Portuguese league. He has very little experience and personally I think it would be a massive mistake, despite all the clamour to have him at Everton.

It's not that I definitely don't want him, he is just a much bigger risk than some seem to anticipate.

For every Mourinho and Wenger there is a Juande Ramos or Jacques Santini or even Christian Gross. Hmm, bit of a Spurs thing developing here

but you'd rather have a Martinez who cannot defend whatsoever.

I wouldn't be so sure Stuart. I think there is a minority who are very unsure on Pereira , and a significant minority (like me) who are dubious at best. Of the ones who are for him I would hazard a guess that a number support the idea based on a lack of 'exciting' options seemingly available.

I will nail my colours to the mast, I am pro Martinez, but my ideal candidate would have probably been Lambert had he not have left last year. I liked him at Norwich and think he is building something good at Villa. I will say this quietly but I was also hoping that Benitez may have opted for us rather than leaving his family to go to Italy.

Mourinho isn't bad.

Spurs fans seem chuffed with AVB.

Porto's managerial production line is worth taking a gamble on.

Especially when the alternative is the relegated manager of Wigan.

I live in Portugal and have asked many Portuguese friends their opinion of him and none of them rate him and a lot say he's crazy! Mind you they are nearly all Benfica fans.
Too much of a risk for me.

In fairness Mike the managerial merits of Mourinho in particular are not relevant. Was Pereira even there when he was? By that basis United should have simply promoted Meulensteen or Phelan then surely? And why should we make the same mistake? Steve Round it is.

This needs to be understood.

There is nobody out there who can guarantee us anything.

Trophies, league position, avoiding relegation, Europe etc.

Nobody.

Repeat, NOBODY.

There are enough examples out there of managers who have succeeded then failed.

And there are enough examples out there of managers who have failed then succeeded.

This tells us, to a degree, it's all a bit of a lottery.

Consequently, when managers plus/minus points are being discussed and I see "This plus that plus the other will give us those" I just think 'good luck with that'.

Football (like life) simply doesn't work that way.

How many of the massive Pereira fans on here are the managers agent ?

Could be the Portugese Neil Lennon and if he's so great, why is he available ?

This over-critical stuff is easy.

Eugene (991)

I agree that there are no guarantees.

However, football (like life) is all about probability. For example, if there was manager that had experience of managing clubs in the Premier League, with a similar wage bill to Everton's, and he'd won trophies and consistently finished in the Top 7, there would be a higher probability of him being successful at Everton than a candidate who had never won any silverware.

The problem for Bill Kenwright is that such a manager does not exist. However, some managers will have a higher probability of being successful at Everton than others. Vitor may not have experience of managing in the Premier League, but he has won trophies. Martinez has experience of managing a club with a lot less money than Everton, and he's won a trophy, but he's just been relegated from the Premier Laegue. Laudrup has won a trophy and finished in the top half of the Prem with a limited budget, but he may be a one-season-wonder etc etc. There are pros and cons to each manager, but it basically comes down to probability.

As Eugene indicates, Pereira could be a huge mistake or he could be a great success - likewise Martinez or any of the other names we're supposedly linked with.

Personally, I just like the way Pereira talks about the game...high pressing, control of the ball and a compact midfield. An ability to create various patterns from the same basic formation and a liking for attractive, progressive football helps too.

He's a winner as well - okay, in a league with few great teams but he has finished above a very good Benfica side 2 years running and didn't lose a game this season until it didn't matter.

I'd be happy with taking the risk with an Everton bred number two by his side.

Nice analysis Chris. The last sentence worries me. I don't think that there is any room for the old boys (long term) with Pereira. Certainly not as number two. A manager who has a bit a reputation would not be dictated to on this. It may be simplistic but I hardly see Stubbs (in particular) Ferguson or Weir fitting into a continental system, and I doubt Neville would be interested if he isn't manager

No one in England had heard of Arsene Wenger when he took over in September 1996 at Arsenal. And look how he turned out. Periera could be a Mourinho, or he could be a complete disaster. We just don't know. Anyway, BK is making the decision so he might not go for Mr Johnny Foreigner after all.

Stuart #967, Porto may always be in with a shout of winning the Portuguese League, but it didn't stop Mourhino showing what he could do in the EPL, or latterly AVB.

So Fer, so good (see what I did there?).
There's also a different interpretation...Kenwright is simply going through the motions to deflect criticism when he announces an "unpopular" appointment in due course. His comments that a lot of fans have been expressing their confidence in him picking the right man cos he "got it right" 11 years ago coupled with his labelling of at least some fans as "electricians and plumbers" and of the club as "industrial"...don't exactly fill me with confidence.

You may be right Mark about the number two, although I'm tempted to think Neville in particular would jump at the chance to learn under a guy like Pereira (maybe even Dunc) but it's just guesswork and supposition so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Eh, who's that getting out of the Merc in Goodison Road - oh crap it's Tony Pulis!

Patrick Murphy

£2m smackers may be the stumbling black with Martinez, an internal appointment would not fill the fans with optimism and I think it is just a matter of how much the Porto guy wants in salary and whether he will be able to accept the budget being offered. But like everybody else I really haven't got a scooby.
Unless of course w appointed a joint managership of Martinez and the Porto guy, nah too expensive but it would be fun watching them arguing about whose fault it was if it went pear shaped.

I hope Neville would stay in some capacity Chris, I just think that if he is not the manager he will go to United and be first team coach there. Weir seems an intelligent guy so would be happy with him being involved. Stubbs= legend as a player, but every time I hear him on the radio etc. he seems a bit inarticulate? I know it sounds snobbish but it puts me off him a bit. Ferguson would stay I think but he is some way from being involved in the first team, as far as I am aware he is only starting out coaching the kids?

More importantly they might want it, but it is unlikely that Pereira will want to surround himself with Moyes' men

Chris Kelly
023 Posted 30/05/2013 at 15:52:43
It doesn't really matter who will be manager! No-one can come in and get us the type of positions Moyes got us. I mean, he even got us 4rth! Champions League! Even though we did shite, we were still there!

Without money, we are destined only to 'overachieve' as the pundits like to remind us. Personally I think the league should be, dare I say it, 'americaniZed.' A playoff format at the end of the season would at least give me some hope at the start of the season. It's pretty shitty to start every season knowing that we CAN'T win the league.

Pereira, according to the Portuguese, was the football brain behind AVB...Pereira staying at Porto was the reason AVB failed at Chelsea. He's a proven winner and a known scholar of the game and will go into the dressing room with that reputation.

My view is that more of our current squad would be content to see what Pereira offers than they would with Martinez. Plus quality players would be more interested in signing for Pereira. Of the two the Portuguese bloke is the clear winner to me.

Eric #016 - Mourinho won the Champions League, Pereira has performed poorly when facing teams outside of Portugal. That in itself should sound warning alarms.

I'm not a Martinez fan but we could really benefit from his learning curve. Getting relegated could be the best thing to happen to him and us.

Give him a good defence and maybe his attaking instincts make us a good team. Who knows? but there is a much higher risk with Pereira than even Mark hughes and I wouldn't have wanted Hughes for a second.

The sooner it's sorted, the better; clubs are getting their cheque books out early this year.

Although I accept it's a difficult job to appoint the right manager, I still think this should've been sorted out sooner. DM's move to Man Utd on a six-year deal was clearly thrashed out over a few months so, if BK really didn't know what was going on behind his back, then more fool him.

When the manager has not signed a contract going into the last six months and with no clear intention of doing so, that should've triggered the search for a new manager — not after the last game of the season! These guys out of contract now won't hang around forever, and neither will players looking for a new club.

Mark Tanton @002 — How is BK getting it spot on?

We have been without a manager now for almost a month and everyone except BK knew Moyes was jumping ship 6 months ago. Other clubs are already signing players for next season while Kenwright ponces about... I will tell you what would be spot on:

A chairman, once he knew his manager was leaving, would pick out a couple of names he wanted and go after the first one on his list. If that failed, then the second on the list... and so forth. Getiing the job done quickly and smoothly, like a pro.

What BK is doing is interviewing people and telling them, "We will let you know next week," as if it was for some shelf-stacking job in Tesco's...

Spot on — my arse! Look at how Man Utd conducted business over Moyes: all done in 48 hours. The longer this farce goes on, the more worried I become. In fact, it could be seen as an insult to some would-be managers for being put on the back burner. This whole charade wouldn't surprise me if Kenwright was waiting for Pip's answer once he has his badges. All the rest a PR exercise to appease the fans...

FFS — spot on?!?! Haven't you learned anything about BK in all these years??? The man's an idiot. If he wants Martinez, then give him the job; let him crack on and stop pissing about.

As for BK's "I got it right last time as regards to DM." — Didn't Walter Smith pick Moyes for him?

Eugene Ruane

Gavin (007), agree that we can't ignore probability, but I believe we ALMOST can.

For me probability only really comes in to play at the very top and bottom of the spectrum.

In other words, your chances of success would (in all probability) be increased with Mourinho, Ferguson or Bob Paisley and your chances of failure increased with Claude Anelka, Jim Fallon or Alan Ball.

But a top manager we DEFINITELY won't be getting and (hopefully) not one from the opposite end of the spectrum either.

We will get a manager from 'somewhere in the middle' and that is why I believe we'll be dealing more with luck than probability.

Part of your post actually indicates this very well.

"Vitor may not have experience of managing in the Premier League, but he has won trophies. Martinez has experience of managing a club with a lot less money than Everton, and he's won a trophy, but he's just been relegated from the Premier Laegue. Laudrup has won a trophy and finished in the top half of the Prem with a limited budget, but he may be a one-season-wonder etc etc"

Exactly, I still can't pick one of those based on probability and see none of them offering me a definite anything.

So I'd choose Pereira.

Why?

I read a piece on him that indicated he felt the game should be played the same way I think it should be played.

I know, ridiculous - and I completely understand, if he were to get the job, he's as much chance of failure as he does of success.

But same with Martinez...or Laudrup...or Lennon...or..

Pereira's record in the Champions League this year wasn't too bad!

In the group stage they beat PSG 1-0 at home and lost 2-1 away. They qualified with no other defeats.

In the knock out stage they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Malaga (who, in the quarters were seconds away from dumping Dortmund out). They were 1-0 up after their home leg and lost 2-0 in the away leg, in which their main playmaker Moutinho went off injured at half time and they had a defender send off just after half time.

People have debated as to who exactly BK is listening to. Well I’m placing a lot of store by the ToffeeWeb poll where 10,922 votes were cast and I know Lyndon was sending the results of the poll to the club.

Whoever else BK is listening to I don’t believe he would ignore those kinds of numbers.

I think he is only too well aware that there's a lot riding on this appointment for him personally. It’s not as if he needs to cough up big money as has been the case with other projects which have failed to materialise.

All he has to do to come up smelling of roses is pick someone who features strongly on that list which essentially means one of the top three. Laudrup – 22%; Martinez – 16%; and Pereira -13 % and he can’t fail. Where he’s let us down before is where he’s needed to find cash for a project and, as we all know, he hasn’t achieved it.

Slaven Bilic was 4th in the poll with 7% and Bielsa didn’t even feature. He would need very strong reasons to move away from anyone not in the top three. I don’t believe he would be prepared to risk the mass of opprobrium which would come down on his head if he did.

I reckon Laudrup is a non starter purely for the fact that there is not sufficient evidence to guarantee that he would that much (if at all) better than the other two to justify paying Swansea £10M compo. Nor does he appear to want to move or, more importantly, want to move to us.

I’ve done a quick trawl of other fan/football sites who have polled supporters over past few weeks with the following results:

Vitalfootball – 60% No to an internal appointment

NSNO – Pereira 60%; Laudrup 13%; Martinez 12%

There may be others but I didn’t find them and I expect they’d all be relatively similar.

So if you were Kenwright what would you do? Invite months or possibly years of hassle or give the fans what they want, bearing in mind what they want is an eminently sensible wish. I know what I’d do. So put simply my money’s on Pereira or Martinez, with Martinez maybe just nudging it.

I just voted no in the Poll

Not because I have anything against Martinez, just because the question was "would you be HAPPY with Roberto Martinez". I would not.

If the question was "would you be CONTENT..." Then it would have been a Yes.

Point is, am I excited by the prospect? No. And to me that's the nub of it.

Compared to Pereira (who I'll freely admit to knowing virtually zip about, except what I've read on here) I am not EXCITED by the prospect of Martinez.

The Moyes era left me stone cold bored except for a few patches, but to his great credit, he left a solid base to work from.

I have no faith that anyone could do a better job of 'being David Moyes' - so the ONLY option is risk, else stagnation at best is guaranteed.

And while many might not fancy it, I am hungry for risk, and the more the better _ because it implies CHANGE, which holds hope of PROGRESS.

Without radical change the best we can hope for is stability and 6th to 8th every year.

The foundation is SO solid, there's NO CHANCE of disaster - so let's please have a fucking go at it.

If it fails, Okay, we take our lumps and bruises - and your Stubbs, Weirs and O'Neills of this world will still be there in a year or two if we have to revert to KITAP1

Pereira plus his trainer, plus any one of Nev, Weir or Stubbsy would be ace.

Martinez plus same would do.

It all depends on Bill's risk appetite:

Weir etc: Zero Risk, Zero reward
Martinez: Medium / Medium
Pereira: High / High...

I hope Bill's sense of drama and romance will win over his doubts and the little voices urging safety and caution...

He will be forgiven a brave mistake if it turns out bad, but won't survive a lame one.

I say Fucking go for it Billy - let NSNO guide you.

I would be happy to take a punt on Pereira. And those staking the claims of Bielsa over the last week or so have been quite persuasive. I have reservations about Martinez in some areas, although I would be happy to give him the benefit of the doubt.

After the England debacle last night you wonder about a British manager. If that is really the best we can do, tactically and practically, then we look to have fallen so far behind the rest of the world. The Premiership sold itself to Sky and English football along with it. I am really beginning to wonder whether Moyes isn’t going to struggle. Maybe this will all work out for the best for us.

So much about Pereira fits the bill - especially if you compare him to the hyped, over-rated Martinez: success, good footballing education, substance over style; part of a dynasty which works; builds from the back; held on to a good team and developed it after so many wanted to leave post-AVB.

I'd love to see Duncan as No.2 and Big Nev as goalkeeping coach - both utter legends.

All this consultation business is rubbish!

Which chairman worth his salt would appoint someone to the most important position in his club to on the result of a popularity poll on a fans `website?
And which website would he choose? The one that came up with the name he was minded to appoint or the one in which the favoured choice was someone he`d never heard of? I ask you ?

BK`s job is to do the research and then appoint the person he -and technically his Board- feels ticks all or most of the boxes Not to hide behind the cock-eyed views of people like us on here.

Stubbs,Weir,Martinez orPerreira ? I just hope he listens to what we have to say on them and then comes up with somebody we`ve never thought of.

That`s what he did last time and it worked ,didn`t it?

Phil Neville it is then.

It is time to take a bit of a gamble and give him a go. We will never know if he cuts it in the Prem if he is never given the chance.

Pereira would be great, with someone from the backroom staff as assistant. I go for Neville, but Stubbs would also do.

Article on Yahoo Sports about how Porto have made liver £340M over last 109 years from sale of players and still kept competitive edge.

Surely Pereiro is a must???

What would we do with all that Liver? Mind you, if the manager knows his onions it should sell pretty well in the cafes around Goodison.

Stale et al. I am afraid decent managers ( and with Pereria's reputation in Portugal you have to consider him as such) will not normally accept being told who their assistant is. It doesn't happen often does it that an assistant stays especially after the immediate short term bedding in. Everyone has their team, look at Hughes/Bowen at Stoke, Moyes/Round/Lumsden. With Pereira we are either all in or not at all. There is no halfway house I worry. Make you mind up what you would prefer.

No contest, it's got to be Pereira.

Martinez has his merits but he is not developed enough for our great club. 6 wins a season doesn't cut it. Then Bielsa, he's good but watch his Chile team play A mouth watering Spain 2011. Great pressing game, massive work rate but looked like headless chickens.

Pereira was with AVB almost every step of the way, THEY won leagues and trophies and with AVB gone he, Pereira, under pressure continued to maintain form just as he did when each season his best players were sold.

Another thread on here demonstrated that non-Brit coaches without PL experience had a 67% success rate so I'd take the risk. I don't think our style is a million miles off his so he's a good fit. A pressing high tempo, well drilled approach that Baines, Coleman and Fellaini would revel in. Mirallas, Oviedo, Jelavic, Barkley, McAleny, Vellios, Pienaar and Gibo would be in their element. And me, well I'd just luv it, luv it!

I'm like Eugene in that Pereira sells his brand of football to that which I want to watch, it's got to be attacking and entertaining. I have said before that Morgue Goodison isn't a patch on what she used to be and I personally feel that's down to a lot of the safety first dirge on offer for the last ten years, we actually have fans that haven't seen anything else.

I also posted a mailbag item that never saw light of day comparing the decision making process by BK and his chums to the interview scene in an old 80s comedy Hollywood Shuffle where they ask a load of black guys they want to find another Eddie Murphy with tat like they need to be Murphesque, it could be the same looking for Moyesesque - http://m.youtube.com/results?q=hollywood%20shuffle%20auditions#/watch?v=4l4PlS6E-QY
