Martinez seeks to clarify Deulofeu situation

Roberto Martinez says that there is plenty of scope for Gerard Deulofeu to return for a second loan spell at Everton next season and suggests that the winger was mis-quoted following a recent interview with Catalan Radio.

Much has been made by the media in the past week of Deulofeu apparently stating his desire to return to Barcelona when his current loan deal at Goodison expires.

Martinez maintains, however, that the door is very much open to him coming back to Everton next season.

“I think he was taken out of context," the Blues' boss says. "[T]he question was ‘Would you like to play one day for the Barcelona first team?'

“The answer is going to be, as a Barcelona player who has been there since he was eight, yes because that's his focus and wish for the future.

“But the interview does not imply he definitely will not remain here next season."

Barcelona elected to farm Deulofeu out on loan to Everton last summer ahead of interest from a host of other clubs, hoping that life in the Premier League would expand his game and experience.

The 19 year-old was just settling into a groove with the Blues when he was struck down with a serious hamstring injury in December that sidelined him for the best part of six weeks.

He is now feeling his way back to form after making a full recovery but his injury layoff could actually have enhanced his prospects of returning to Everton for the 2014-15 season – Barcelona may feel he would benefit from another year in England to make up for the lost time.

“He never said he's not enjoying his time at Everton," Martinez continues. "He has loved the test in the Premier League and being with us.

“We all share the view that nobody will be prouder than every Everton fan, and person connected with Everton, to see Gerard Deulofeu's career has improved here.

“We've benefited from having his talents with us.

“Our agreement with Barcelona was to have him for one season though and that's where we are.”
