Martinez expects to use full length of transfer window

Roberto Martinez says that he is prepared for his summer recruitment plans to extend to the last day of the transfer window.

The Spaniard cites the usual delay to the player merry-go-round that is caused by the World Cup Finals which will keep the football world pre-occupied well into July as one reason why much of his activity may come later in the summer.

However, he also wants to give his younger players the chance to impress during pre-season and press their claims for a role at first-team level as Martinez aims to boost his squad towards the 27 or 28 players he feels will be needed to challenge on three fronts come September.

"It is a World Cup year and things will get delayed and certain situations will be worth us waiting until the last second to see if they happen or not and that is something we are well in control of," the 40 year-old told PA Sport.

"We have our targets and we have highlighted the positions we need to bring players in.

"But I also have a few young players who will be given an opportunity in pre-season and depending on how they do they will fill some of those positions in the fist-team squad. I think our young players next season will have a massive say in how good we are going to be."

Martinez is typically circumspect about the types of players he wants to bring in, aware as he is of the team spirit and cohesiveness that was such a positive feature of the Blues' 2013/14 season.

Not surprisingly, though, he already has targets in mind amid suggestions from sources close to the club that he hopes to land a couple of them before the World Cup kicks off.

"Recruitment is going to be important," he continued. "[E]very time you bring a player into the club there is always a margin of error in terms of how they will adapt.

"The right characters need to come to the club and we need to be large enough in terms of numbers to face every competition with a real desire to hit good performances.

"I do feel we have to be really clear in what we need, who we bring in, and it is going to take until the last day of the window to finalise the squad."
