Heitinga retires and moves into coaching

Former Everton defender John Heitinga has hung up his boots at the age of 32 and will take up a coaching position at Ajax Amsterdam.

The Dutchman spent four years at Goodison Park after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2009 for £6m and was named the club's Player of the Season for one of them but eventually moved on to Fulham in Roberto Martinez's first season in charge.

A spell with Hertha Berlin followed before he returned to his first love, Ajax last year.

John Heitinga – can't we get him to teach them how to defend? He's gotta be better than what we have now.
