Pennington joins Saddlers on loan

Everton U21 defender Matthew Pennington has joined Walsall on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old, who has had prior loan spells with Tranmere Rovers and Coventry City, winning the latter's Young Player of the Year award last season, beat today's 5pm loan transfer deadline to sign for the Saddlers.

Pennington is a regular in the centre of the David Unsworth's U21s side and, having already made his senior bow for the Blues earlier this season, now gets the chance to experience more first-team experience in League One.

Checking through his appearances for the Under-21s this season, seems he was out of action for four or five months from September to February — no game time.

He must've been injured but I'm not finding much... See, now that's something Harold Matthews would've been all over.

Agreed Michael, I'm none the wiser myself, Harold will be missed on ToffeeWeb.

Hasn't he been on loan?

Michael, he played against Barnsley in the League Cup, was taken off at half-time. Although Martinez said he had been Everton's best player, he got injured after that, but I don't know when; Harold would have been more precise.

He came on as a sub against Dagenham in the FA Cup, played against Sunderland in an U21 game. So for the lad's sake, he is better off going to Walsall and playing some real football for the rest of the season.

He is coming along nicely but will not help his game by playing U21 football at his age... glorified practice matches.

Harold was great for info on the younger players. Maybe we could dedicate a column on this to him.
