Exploiting uncertainty over his contract situation apparently fostered by his agent, media speculation continues to link James McCarthy with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Irish international has three years left to run on the five-year deal he signed when he joined the Blues in August 2013 and has publicly said he is happy at Goodison Park.

Noises that he is disgruntled by Everton's supposed failure to offer him a new contract last summer when the likes of Ross Barkley, John Stones and Seamus Coleman were penning new deals, coupled with the recent arrival of another central midfielder in the form of Tom Cleverley, have kept stories of a big-money move to Spurs bubbling up every few weeks.

The Daily Mail are the latest outlet to push this narrative, claiming that the North London side will offer Aaron Lennon in part-exchange for McCarthy thius summer.

The report claims that Daniel Levy is willing to offer a "substantial" sum for him but don't wish to be embroiled in a transfer saga for a player whom Roberto Martinez would hate to lose.

Update The Mirror's John Cross claims that Spurs "are ready to make a £20m move" for McCarthy, with Lennon as part of the deal.
