Updated Georginio Wijnaldum is the latest midfielder to be linked with Everton this summer, with reports claiming Roberto Martinez "is ready to join the race" for the £15m-rated PSV player.

Newcastle United have been in pole position for the 24-year-old if media speculation is correct but, following a report in The Mirror that the Blues are interested, similar assertions have been made in De Telegraaf and now in the Liverpool Echo.

The Echo "understand" that Everton are pursuing the Dutch international but thus far there has been no confirmation of a bid which leaves Newcastle leading the chase.

There has been nothing beyond the newspaper chatter to suggest Everton are actually interested in Wijnaldum and that should leave the way clear for Newcastle to negotiate terms, barring any late interest from Zenit St Petersburg.

The Barcodes' managing director Lee Charnley is reportedly in the Netherlands this week to hammer out a deal for Wijnaldum who they say would command a £60,000-a-week salary.
