Blues line up bid for Boro defender

Everton will move for Middlesbrough's Under-21 defender Ben Gibson if they fail to tempt Nemanja Vidic back to the Premier League.

That's the claim in The Mirror's latest transfer story as Roberto Martinez continues to look for defensive reinforcements for the departed Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz.

The media are continuing to press the Vidic angle even though the 33-year-old had, by most accounts, a poor 2014-15 season with Inter Milan and has reportedly rejected the prospect of joining Everton.

Gibson, meanwhile, does not fit the bill of being an experienced centre-half that Martinez is believed to be after while he grooms the likes of Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning.

The report doesn't mention a potential fee for Gibson but it does claim interest from the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool for the 23-year-old.
