Chelsea could bid as much as £34m for Stones

Newspaper reports continue to peddle the line that Chelsea "are confident" in being able to persuade Everton to sell John Stones with the reported ceiling raised to £34m.

No doubt taking their cue from Stamford Bridge, a number of media outlets are claiming that the Champions will shortly go back to Everton with an offer of £26m despite Roberto Martinez's assertion that the defender is not for sale.

Few commentators believe Everton will consider anything less than £30m and while Everton's only other public denial from boardroom level appears to be a story placed in The Telegraph with Chris Bascombe (one saying that they had informed Chelsea in writing of their intention to keep hold of Stones) speculation will keep churning out numbers.

In that vein, The Telegraph's Matt Law now suggests that Jose Mourinho will recommend to his directors that a deal be structured that would eventually be worth £34m.
