Van Gaal 'enters race' for Stones

That's the claim of The Mirror, whose weekly serving of Sunday transfer nonsense appears to have gone after low-hanging fruit this weekend.

With Chelsea yet to formally follow up their initial £20m bid for Stones – despite the salivating London media corps insisting a £34m offer was forthcoming within days – this latest story appears to be pushing United's supposed interest in an effort to keep the story alive.

They place a rather arbitrary £38m price tag on the 21-year-old England international and assert that Old Trafford representatives have made "discreet contact" with their counterparts at Goodison.
