Shaqiri u-turn sees Swiss forward end up at Stoke

Everton have missed out on reported target Xherdan Shaqiri after the 23-year-old completed a move to Stoke City today.

The Blues had been linked with Shaqiri for much of the summer after it emerged that he was surplus to requirements at Internazionale, the club he joined last summer after the World Cup in Brazil.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes made the first concrete move to sign him when the Serie A club accepted a 12m offer for the Swiss last month but Shaqiri is reputed to have rejected the Potters without even picking up the phone.

He looked odds-on to seal a return to the Bundesliga and join Schalke 04 shortly afterwards but a fee with Inter couldn't be agreed and the ex-Bayern man was back at square one looking for a new club.

With Stoke's offer still on the table, Roberto Martinez is believed to have thrown Everton's hat into the ring, but only with the offer of a loan for Shaqiri. Perhaps because he didn't want to blow the majority of his summer budget on one player and bow to his reputed 70,000-a-week salary demands or because he wasn't sold on the player's temperament, the Blues boss was only interested in bringing him on for the coming season with a view to signing him in a year's time if all went well.

With both Inter and Shaqiri apparently favouring a permanent deal, Hughes was able to secure his man and land what he has described as the "top quality" acquisition he was looking to make to cap off his summer dealings.
