The assertion is made in the Sunday People who suggest that 22-year-old goalkeeper could be worth as much as £17m, just two years after he left Birmingham for just £3.5m.

Roberto Martinez was said to have lodged a firm inquiry for him at the time but did not follow up his interest and the young 'keeper moved to Stoke City instead. That came a year after David Moyes had tried to buy him while he was still at Everton.

With Tim Howard closing in on his 37th birthday next year, the Blues' boss will need to recruit the American's long-term successor of he doesn't feel that Joel Robles is capable but if Butland is the man, he will command a high price.
