The Blues are mentioned alongside a clutch of teams as being interested in the Republic of Ireland international, including Liverpool, Stoke and Tottenham who are all on the look-out for back-up strikers.

Something of a journeyman who has never managed more than eight goals a season, Long has, nevertheless, shown himself to be accomplished at leading the line on his own and that could make him a target for Roberto Martinez who needs cover for Romelu Lukaku.

Long is approaching his 29th birthday, however, and that might make him less attractive to the Blues who have made buying a young a central transfer policy of late.
