Everton keep tabs on young Belgian defender

Everton have been watching Bjorn Engels of Club Brugge in recent months according to a report in Belgium.

Het Laatste Nieuws claim that scouts from the club have been tracking the 21-year-old centre half who likens himself to John Stones.

"I see a bit of myself in John Stones," Engels is quoted as saying. "Similar in height, in stature, and also a defender who is looking to play out from the back.

"Comfortable with the ball at his feet, strong in the air, occasionally scoring a goal."

Everton have yet to put in an offer for the defender but HLN suggest it could be a possibility during the close season.

Update Everton's Belgian scout Andy De Smet later admitted to Sports/Football Magazine that Engels has "a lot of qualities in the building from behind, so in that sense it [his] profile fits in there," but says nothing is imminent in terms of a bid.

“Now, all English clubs follow a lot of young players long and intensive in order to correctly assess their potential and scope for growth.

“So it is not because a broker in the press throws a scout from a Premier League club often in the stands was a transfer is imminent.”
