Chelsea make inquiry about buying back Lukaku

Chelsea have made contact with Everton regarding Romelu Lukaku according Belgian newspaper, Het Laatste Nieuws.

The paper's usually reliable London football correspondent, Kristoff Terreur, claims that the former Champions have been in touch to sound out the possibility signing the striker back less than two years after they let him to the Blues.

Chelsea sold Lukaku to Everton for £28m in late July 2014 after sending him out on two loan spells, first to West Bromwich Albion and then Goodison Park for the 2013-14 season, as then manager Jose Mourinho was apparently unconvinced he was capable of leading the line for the title-chasing Londoners.

Lukaku went on to score 20 goals in all competitions in his first season as a permanent Everton player, including finishing joint-top scorer in the 2014-15 Europa League and hit 25 this past season before tailing off badly at the end of the campaign amid poor personal form and the team's struggles in general.

Everton are believed to be looking for upwards of £65m for the 23-year-old who has openly declared his desire to play Champions League football next season.

That would not be on offer at Stamford Bridge until the 2017-18 season at the earliest but he could be drawn back to the English club he supported as a boy nonetheless.
