Updated Barcelona have made John Stones their top defensive target for the summer and are preparing a £25m bid but will have to shell out €80m to get him according to different reports.

One of MailOnline's Sunday stories claims that the Spanish champions "are preparing" a bid of £25m for Stones but that Everton are asking for £45m.

Earlier, Mundo Deportivo in Spain had reported that the price tag was closer to £60m (€80m) for the 22-year-old who is also said to be a target for Manchester United.

Stones was impressive again on England duty in last night's friendly against Australia after a mixed season in the Premier League with the Blues and that has contributed to fresh reports that he could be lured away this summer.

Barca were linked with the England international last autumn and were then thought to have dropped their interest when he began struggling for form but the former Barnsley player is once again attracting plenty of interest.

Indeed, ex-Everton captain, Phil Neville has openly advocated that United should sign Stones to partner Chris Smalling at Old Trafford, admitting that when he arrived from Barnsley he immediately felt the then teenager was a "Manchester United" player.

"Stones would cost a lot but forget the cost," Neville said. "I was at Everton when he signed from Barnsley sand straight away I thought, 'He's a Man United player'. There are certain players you say he's a Man United player and he looks one to me; he's English, he's young, he's got the confidence, the character and the ability.

"He's Rio Ferdinand-like, I don't like making comparisons but the way he brings the ball out. He's got criticism this year which I think is a bit unjust and cruel. But I think he's a player I'd to see come in."
