Mata speculation gathering pace
Unsubstantiated rumours on Twitter suggested that contact has already been initiated with Mata's representatives and that an official bid of between £25m and £30m will be forthcoming next week but AS in Spain are also reporting Goodison Park as a possible destination for the midfielder.
Those suggestions have been lent further credence by a tweet from Flora Moussey, a journalist at InfoSport in France who claims that a £25m is indeed in the works.
The Telegraph, meanwhile, report that Everton will try and convince the player to move to Goodison on basis that he doesn't have a guaranteed future at United. Other outlets are suggesting, however, that he could look to return to former club Valencia.
Mata left Chelsea two years ago as David Moyes's biggest signing during his time at Old Trafford but he could be contemplating his next move following the arrival of Jose Mourinho, particularly now that Zlatan Ibrahimovich appears to have taken his No.8 jersey.
Mata played under Ronald Koeman at Valencia and has credited the new Blues boss with helping become the player he is today. Barcelona's reported decision to back away from any deal for the 28-year-old and the fact that Valencia couldn't afford him have enhanced Everton's chances of signing him.
