updated Everton have fired the opening salvo in what could be a bidding war with Chelsea over Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to a report in Italy.

The Londoners are believed to be targeting the Senegal international this summer and the Express claim they've already bid £34m but Ronald Koeman has been credited with interest as well and Calciomercato.it, one a number of rumour-peddling outlets in Italy, say the a Blues have offered €45m (around £38.5m) for him.

This isn't the first time Everton have been linked with Koulibaly but they now have the financial muscle to compete for his signature if he is indeed available.

A source in the UK suggests there could be something to this latest story, however, with the fee potentially rising further with appearance-related add-ons.

Italian outlets have gone as far as to suggest that talks are planned between Everton and Napoli this week to discuss the move, while media in England report that Chelsea could up their offer for the Koulibaly.
