Everton are reportedly looking at William Carvalho as Ronald Koeman seeks a top-class defensive midfielder to strengthen his team.

The Portuguese international was first mentioned as a Blues target towards the end of Euro2016 when the first doubts over Axel Witsel's reported move to Goodison started to set in.

Witsel was widely expected to make a big move to Everton from Zenit St Petersburg when he returned from holiday in Sardinia last week after press reports in both the UK and Russia suggested a deal had been done between the two clubs.

The Belgian has yet to make a decision, however, with Napoli, Inter Milan and possibly Chelsea all supposedly in the running and that has led to an increase in talk of Koeman turning to Carvalho.

Record in Portugal are reporting Everton's interest in an £18m deal with Sporting for the 24-year-old who was a mainstay in his country's triumph at the European Championships earlier this month.
