Everton are attempting to sign Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, according to reports that claim the club have triggered his release clause with an offer.

MailOnline and now Sky Sports say that the 26-year-old could become only Ronald Koeman's second signing of the summer if the Senegal international agrees terms on a £7.2m move.

Gueye was signed by former Villa boss Tim Sherwood for £9m a year ago but the Midlanders' relegation has lowered the release clause in the contract he signed when he joined from Lille.

He has apparently been the subject of serious interest from Marseille this summer but reportedly rejected their advances in the hopes of remaining in the Premier League.
