Everton hold firm against low-ball bids for Stones and Lukaku

John Stones's proposed move to the Etihad Stadium has hit the buffers for now if reports suggesting Manchester City have issued Everton a take-it-or-leave it offer of £40m for the defender are true.

Both The Guardian and The Telegraph say that the Blues won't budge from their valuation and are holding out for a straight cash offer of £50m — i.e. with no players as part exchange or appearance-related add-ons to the deal.

Everton reportedly rejected a £38m bid from Chelsea in August last year and with Stones having a season's more experience under his belt and given the rampant inflation of the domestic transfer market, £50m is seen as a realistic starting point for negotiations.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are supposed to have offered Everton £57m for Romelu Lukaku as Diego Costa seems to be edging closer to a return to Atletico Madrid.

Antonio Conte will no doubt look to plough the proceeds of that sale into a move to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge but the Goodison hierarchy are reported to have slapped a £75m price tag on the Belgian and could dig their heels in on that, too.

The Mirror claim, however, that Lukaku wants the move, inferring that he would try and force it through but the Blues are hopeful he will sign an improved contract at Goodison Park instead.
