The Dutch forward struggled to make an impact in the Premier League after he was signed for Manchester United under ex-boss Louis van Gaal and has made only figured six times in all competitions so far this season under Jose Mourinho.

The Liverpool Echo report that United could allow him to leave Old Trafford on a temporary basis in January and that Koeman, who tried to sign him when he was at Southampton, is considering a move for his compatriot.

Roma are also credited with interest in the 22-year-old who was regarded as one of the Netherlands most promising young stars until his career stalled over the past couple of seasons.
