Everton Women edge historic derby

Everton Women have achieved what the men's team hasn't managed in two decades by winning at Anfield today.

It was the first ever Women's Super League fixture between the two clubs at Liverpool FC's stadium and the match was settled by a single goal.

Everton captain Lucy Graham's fired home from distance at the end of the first half to earn the win for Willie Kirk's side.

We have finally won a Derby at Anfield. Ok, It was the Women's Everton, but pickers can't be choosers. 1-0 at Anfield, the hoodoo has been lifted, of course the men needed the women to show them how it is done.

Very well done. The girls showing the boys up. Now for these overpaid first team men to follow up this very important victory with a win at Anfield. It is a disgraceful record that needs to be ripped up, no excuses.

what a great crowd that was 23500 fantastic, with an even better picture at the top of the page, with the players celebrating in front of the away end, and thanks for that link Ian, we just need the men to watch it now, followed by “Big Jimâ€ telling them they all better grow a pair of cajones for Anfield in 3 weeks time!

I watched the full game and we scraped by today. Liverpool dominated and we got a flukey goal. Curious to know if that's the level we play at every game on the women's side. Glad nonetheless that we won a derby ðŸ’ª

One of two saying the curse of an Everton team not winning at Anfield has finally been broken. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the U23s win there last season, 2-0 I think it was?

A mate of mine took his ten year old granddaughter. He said it was football as it used to be. No diving, no deafening tannoy, no VAR, no stupid halftime entertainment, a 23,500 crowd and an Everton win at Anfield. This sport could become very popular.

John@19: That's probably only because there's no big money in it. If and when it ever becomes as popular and money-permeated as the men's game, all that would likely change and we'd have diving and all kinds of other cheating. Cheating knows no gender boundaries.

Stan (21) You are probably right. I was in a crowd of 624 at a National League match on Saturday afternoon similarly untainted by the trappings of â€˜Big Event' mania. Fans could celebrate goals without wondering if VAR would intrude. I envied them.

Tony (20) I would support a campaign to outlaw half-time entertainment!

John, yes, that kind of thing is refreshing compared with all the nonesense that surrounds men's top level football. Even the way folks talk about is different. When women's football is discussed, it generally sounds normal and mature, whereas so much commentary on men's football is cringeworthy and childish, the BBC being a prime example.

Great win, and a tonic for EFC. At least the ladies gave it their all and shot from distance for the winner.

Now to beat Norwich and go on an unbeaten run! One game at a time and let's see which team and mindset turns up on Saturday.
