Tosun joins Palace until the summer

Everton have loaned Cenk Tosun to Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season.

The striker has been out of favour at Goodison Park for much of the season and hasn't started a game for the Toffees since the ill-fated home game against Norwich City in late November.

Tosun is said to have been keen to secure a move away from Goodison Park this month, even on a temporary basis, out of fear that his place at this summer's European Championships would be otherwise under threat.

The Turkish international has made just five appearances, two starts and has one goal for Everton so far this season but is hoping to rekindle his campaign with the Eagles.

Tosun was linked with a move to Selhurst Park last summer but a deal for the 28-year-old could not be agreed at the time. There are reports that Palace have negotiated an option to buy him for around €20m (~£17m) at the end of the season if he does well.

The former Besiktas striker goes to London with Carlo Ancelotti's blessing, with the Everton boss confirming that he spoke to Tosun about his future.

“I spoke with him," the Italian said. "He wanted to find a club that could give him the opportunity to play so I think it's a good solution for him and I hope for the best [for him].”

Even though he's gone we still can't invest in a long term replacement as he will likely be back next year.

Good luck Tosun, I hope he does okay, starts playing regular football, and scores a few goals, which will help us off-load him permanently in the summer.

Tosun in the right formation and with players who can feed him might just surprise a few of us, he'll find the the net more than he has with us.

If played correctly a very handy player, just doesn't suit our style of play. Surprised he wasn't used more as a sub, when the game slows, as he is a reasonable striker. Shame.

Palace are desperate. Benteke has been a big flop and Zaha has had his mind elsewhere this season. He may score one or two for them but he is a limited player. Everton still have a few like that.

No pace,no power, not skilful on the deck, no good in the air so has to have chances created for him which we never really have done.
Hope he does well so we can sell him at a higher value.

He's really not a bad player at all, will help them a lot if he just averages the goal every three games he has scored for us. I can see him getting six or 7 for them by the end of the season.

Is it only Evertonians who sing the praises of players who didn’t cut it, are offloaded because they are dross yet are quite happy lambasting players still on the books? Curious. This slow motion guy is absolute bobbins, can’t even take a penalty ffs, good riddance.

After the way Palace pissed us about over Zaha, I'm surprised we've played ball so readily and seemingly on their terms (ie loan rather than permanent deal). Hope we've inserted a clause compellingly them to buy at an agreed price should he play a specific number of games or score a specific number of goals.

After the disastrous transfer window in the summer of 2017 which we are still struggling with, the board compounded it by signing off, under Walsh and the next coach Allardyce, the purchases of Tosun and Walcott in the following January.

Walsh would be dismissed only months later as was Allardyce so why were these two sanctioned when they weren't compatible with what we had or how the coach we had earmarked as the next one - Silva - wanted to play? (Maybe Walcott but Tosun just isn't quick enough).

No, it's not my money but buying even more when the squad had become a bloated mess simply made the legacy issues even worse.

I wish Tosun well yet to not be in double figures for goals scored after 2 years tells you all you need to know.

Palace are the perfect club for Tosun. If Hodgson gives him a strike partner he'll score goals. He isn't a bad finisher but he needs to play in system where he'll be in positions to score. He's too slow to play as a lone striker

Always amusing when our deadwood goes to a team that's higher than us in the table (not that I expect that to be the case by season's end).

(on a similar note, how many remember that Besic is actually on loan at Sheffield United right now?)

I don't understand this at all. Here is a player that MUST play to keep his international dreams alive so he may even take a pay cut somewhere to make it happen. There are teams desperate to avoid relegation and he is a goalscorer. Why can't the club do something which suits Everton instead of Palace and Tosun himself.

Bill #15, I've never considered Tosun deadwood, exactly. He's played about 2500 minutes for us, the equivalent of about 30 full games, and he has ten goals and six assists. Extrapolated out over an entire season, that would be about 13 and 8, which is pretty decent output for a Prem striker. And I'd put him on the short list of those who have played for the shirt every minute he's been on the pitch. Not one ounce of lazy in that man. Palace will be pleased to have him.

Re Besic, not even many Blades supporters know he's there. He's barely been off the bench for them this season.

Good luck, Brillo! He always came across as a decent man who did his best. Sadly he was in a team which has not had a midfield for a few years and given the kind of striker he is, he was never going to be successful.

Matches are won, and teams are run, from the midfield. Forwards will have a thankless task if all they ever see is the occasional cross while in the middle of eight opposition defenders after a five minute buildup from the back, defenders will be in trouble of the opposition can outnumber them in their own last third.

Everton's midfield has been a scandal for the past 3 seasons, with two players, Schneiderlin and Sigurdsson causing more problems for their own side than the opposition, Walcott and Iwobi have been largely useless. Gueye, Davies and Holgate occasionally managed to have some influence, but when you are effectively playing a 4-1-1 formation, or at best a 4-2-1 then you are going to be in permanent trouble.

Good. I'm glad he's gone, the true definition of tits on a bull if there ever was one. Ancelloti must have had a real good laugh when he saw him in "action" (a phrase I used carefully).
Slow, immobile yet looked like a fun chap on our Everton YouTube videos. Exactly the type of player we didn't need in the first place. Anyone who disagrees must be Steve Walsh with a fake TW account.

Another Brands Blunder. As Conor pointed out, Tosun is desperate to play to make the Euro squad, enough to take a pay cut. There was an opportunity to use that to arrange a permanent deal at the right price that could have made the best out of a poor fit signing.

Mike (17) - I actually agree that Tosun's not a bad player (contrary to most of the subsequent comments) and could be very solid for Palace. He always seemed like an exemplary teammate and someone who genuinely wanted to do well for the club - he just couldn't seem to make the most of his opportunities on the pitch.

"Deadwood" sounds harsh, but was more a reflection of the general consensus on TW that his time here is up.

Lets get things straight before slagging him off. He's not the only one who can't score penalties. When you are put on in a match as a lone striker and getting beat it's not your fault you are chasing the game. He did give everything for the shirt but was played out of position a few times so struggled to make an impact. After all said and done he was a panic buy by you know who so wether he was not good enough or was put into a shit team I don't think he deserves slagging off. I think he will go on and score more goals for them if he is played correctly. He was always a good guy to listen to in interviews but I felt sorry for him when he first arrived and reminded me a bit like a rabbit in the headlights scenario. Good luck to him and hopefully there will be some decent replacements coming in soon to steady the ship.

To some TW’s who consider Tosun deadwood, he is way down the list of the current actual deadwood.
I’ve never seen him give less than 100% unlike some.
I wish him well, I guess it wasn’t meant to be, but that doesn’t make him a bad player, and certainly not deadwood.

Ryan @ 35, if this is the case what about the rest of them. They have all had off days, some more than others. He was used as a sub and rightly so but to say he was woeful is a bit damming to say the least. I bet you cheered a few of his goals. He was out of his depth maybe but not woeful. Sorry to all the Tosun knockers but lets be fair to the guy.

I'd have swapped him for Benteke until the summer as I believe he's the kind of striker Ancelotti wants. Big, strong but hopefully mobile with it. Giroud another possibility.

Not what I want but both are better than Tosun and different to what we have. However neither are in form and both have an-anti Everton back story that some fans will not be favourable too.

Sean at 39, Cenk may not be able to run but let's face it, he is in good company at Everton! Schneiderlin, Sigurdsson, Keane, all embarrassingly slow. At least Cenk had a decent scoring record/rate and gave his all in my opinion so I wish him well at Palace. Not the right player for us though given the players we have currently at the club and the league we play in.

Tosun is a better player than Jordan Ayew and he should improve Palace.
I watched the Blades/Hammers game today. Mo Besic came on for the last 20 minutes and he was typically aggressive. He got a yellow for wiping out Fillipe Anderson who looked groggy afterwards and gave away a free kick just outside the area. He has not changed.

Phil - I tell you what I do know and don’t know and my opinion.

I know it’s early in the window we need a new striker even if Cenk had stayed. I know he wasn’t sold so we still have issue about trying to sell him in 6 months time. I know we now only have Niasse, DCL and Richarlison who can play up front now for 6 months. I know relegation still a real possibility. I know fans are fed up, concerned and scared. I know we have no guarantee we can sign any forward during this window.

I don’t know if we will stay up. I don’t know if we are going to sign anybody up front.

My opinion is if DCL gets injured and we don’t sign another forward is that we are fucked. I think we needed at least one more centre forward even before we let Tosun go. I think it’s a risk and consider we should have waited at least til end of window until we got people in or could see if DCL was still fit.

I totally agree with John (22) assertion that seems stupid to let Tosun go on loan now, as end of January approaches, teams get more desperate and we may have had a chance of offloading him and why didn’t we at least wait until end of window before improving a team above us.

I don’t know terms of loan deal but still believe it is yet another stupid decision by our club. Oh by the way, I also think Tosun is average, reports of us valuing him at £20m absurd and my opinion is formed because of the dross and average players I see in our team every week and terrible mess the powers that be have put our football club in.

There’s a lot of hypocrisy on this thread...

The general consensus is that Tosun isn’t a bad finisher. He’s scored 10 goals in 47 games (Slightly better than 1 in 5) and should be in the prime of his career..

Yet Calvert-Lewin is regularly called out for being woeful at finishing, despite scoring 27 in 115 (slightly better than 1 in 4) while learning on the job and often being played out wide.

Off topic did anyone notice how many EFC old and present where on show in last nights Sheff Utd & West Ham game ?

Besic (looked good but still a dirty bastard mind) some would endorse that, Lunstram, looked decent, Rodwell, now with the Blades, Moyes, actually felt sorry for him when VAR ruled against. Just an observation really. Was there anymore ?

Some harsh comments on here.

Turkish striker, champions League experience. Good first touch, can hit the ball with both feet. Likes to link up play.

Unfortunately for us and him we don't or didn't play 2 up top or have any midfielders run off the strikers shoulder.

You could put Harry Kane or Aguaro up front for us and ruin them. So now we Niasse as back up to DCL and Richarleson. Let hope we don't pick up any injuries as it won't be much fun playing without a midfield or a forward line.

Billy Dawber

Looking at the gaffers face on his press conference he knows somethings going to happen very soon in the transfer market be it a striker a midfielder or a defender. Could just see in his expression that things are about to happen. One only hopes he gets it right.

Ciaran - I actually totally forgot about Kean / that in itself is scary. I thought DCL & Kean looked like they could be useful together the one time I saw them at NUFC away / both their movement looked good obviously v raw as a partnership. Point I was trying to make was DCL for me is key for us in striking department - if he gets injured / banned then honestly don’t know what we will do - the others listed need him (why Silva could not see this and didn’t play him god only knows but he’s gone now thankfully). I didn’t rate Tosun much but out of our options if DCL couldn’t play he would have been my first replacement- is we don’t have him.

Darren - don’t know what get paid means.

Tosun might do ok for Palace. Roy keeps things v simple and it means players know their roles. He could potentially have done ok for us if we'd played to strengths. Possibly Tosun and DCL up top with Sigurdsson in the 10 slot taking pot shots, two grafters in centre mid and wing backs putting lots of crosses in (sounds v Martin O'Neill). Since that has never been attempted we'll never know. And the reason its not been attempted is because that system possibly wouldnt suit Richarlison, Bernard, Walcott, Gomes etc. And because no-one likes Martin O'Neill any more. And also because Allardyce was a xxxx and Silva was a 4231 pragmatist yearning to play a preferred 433. Hopefully Ancelotti knows what to do. Encouraging to hear Gbamin is getting closer anyway

Jerome @ 12, at least he's got a locker. Spare a thought for poor Niasse!

Like most on here I wish him all the best and hope he has a good spell there, meaning we can sell him on and recoup some of the astronomical fee we paid.

Also agree that he is a decent striker, not for us though, I believe playing off a number nine he may just score a few goals.

Hope also that we get someone in ourselves, even if it's a loan with a view to buy, we can't rely just on Richie and the occasional DCL goal, and nobody else looks like stepping up to the plate.

Mike (17) - the answer is he has been on the pitch for 2331 minutes in the Premiership.

Scored 9 goals - so one every 259 minutes - - - 1 goal every 3 games.

For those who have scored at least 10 goals in the League over the last 35 years -
Graham Sharp - one every 257 minutes
Duncan Ferguson - one every 265 minutes
Kevin Campbell - one every 244 minutes
Paul Rideout - one every 265 minutes
Wayne Rooney - one every 250 minutes.

Yup, he is a lousy striker with a poor goal scoring record and perhaps one of the worst we have ever signed.

Oumar Niasse 1184 minutes 8 goals, so he is now better than Rooney, Sharp, Campbell etc? Oh no because he didn't score 10?

Peter 47,

The transfer window is still open for about 2.5 weeks, we may sign someone, even on loan. Never know.

Either way, Tosun was gash for us and is certainly not worth anywhere near the £27m we paid for him. It's better he leaves imo, even if only for 6 months, and hopefully gets some game time for Palace. Better chance of selling him as he certainly wouldn't be getting much game time with us.

With or without Tosun, we still need to sign a striker. Get him playing elsewhere and save some wages.

Justin Doone
67 Posted 12/01/2020 at 08:59:42
I use my eyes Tosun isn't good enough to get us the goals to challenge the top 4. But either are many other players in the squad.

Partly this is down to the managers and playing style not suiting each other. I think Schnides (who I can't stand) has also suffered because of this.

He's an old fashioned striker that wants to be played in, not a modern forward who will press and close defenders down all game.

Secondly I'd like a stat on how many good chances players have vs missed target, saved, scored. I believe Tosun would score more but even so there are so many other factors to consider.

Likewise Siggy is having a stinker of a season in terms of assists and goals. But he's probably the only player we have that can score from outside the box.

He needs to play like Lampard, making late forward runs into space and being given the opportunity to shoot.

Our general team play is rubbish. No one knowing who will get forward to support. Likewise our crossing and final balls are poor.

Hopefully Ancelotti will have been working on tactics, positioning, movement day in, day out.

IMO we would have been better keeping Vlasic and Lookman. I still don't think DCL will ever get us the goals we need either. Neither would Tosun. Carlo Ancelotti won't have managed a shambles of a club like Everton in his entire career, I hope he doesn't walk away.
Steve Shave
69 Posted 12/01/2020 at 09:33:28
Joe McMahon, I would argue that the club rated both Lookman and Vlasic but both had poor attitudes and seemingly both wanted the world 'now' but were not prepared to do the hard yards it takes to get them there...Lookman not looking that great in the Bundesliga this season is he? I also think we should stop looking to DCL for fulfilling all our goal needs, he is a 9, he brings (and will enhance what it is he brings as he matures) so much more than goals, hold up play, flick ons, backing into the defence, linking play etc he will only get better. IMHO we should be looking to those paying around him to be bringing more goals, how can we get the consistent best out of Richy? How can Bernard get in on the action more? How do we get rid of Walcott and replace him with a real goal threat ala Everton Soares, Zaha (I know he won't be coming btw) and or even Jarrod Bowen. Even more importantly, how do we get DCL's strike partners to score goals, can Kean really develop into a top striker, if not we will need a top quality goalscorer in the summer for sure I recognise my post throws up more questions than answers and much of that is for our highly decorated and well paid manager to sort out. I'm just saying that it is unfair to place all our goalscoring expectations on DCL who never shirks, is improving day by day and has all the attributes to go all the way.

Maybe your right Steve, we do need more goals from midfield. Also we do miss Lukaku and his goals, and that's a big void to expect DCL to fill. We could do with a younger Gareth Barry also.

Genuinely feel at palace or a team with two wingers flashing crosses in the box he will score 7 or 8 PL goals by the end of the season.

Goals from midfield without breaking the bank, I’ve said it before: Tomas Soucek. We’d get him for just a few million and he would do brilliantly in the premier league. Exactly the kind of player we need. Physical, tremendous work rate, brilliant in the air and is now getting a great deal of goals.

Hand Vanaken is another who I recommended a good while back and would’ve been an excellent addition at just a few million.

Another player I recommended very highly and we should have bust a gut for in the summer was Reece James. That opportunity is now gone but I believe his transfer would’ve been achievable, certainly for the money we paid for Gbamin. James will eventually be a central midfield player, and an extremely good one.

Good luck to him, not the best player but he always tried and gave 100% effort, reminded me of 'Straq'

Tommy Carter 72 good shout on Soucek I know he's a baller playing in a poor Czech league but didn't know he was a frequent scorer? If we signed someone like that what would that mean for Gbamin when he returns?

Soucek is interesting. His stats are excellent but... Looks a bit like a poor mans sander berge on the clips ive seen. Also czech league v light weight. Suspect hes the sort of player who ends up looking unremarkable at mid table bundesliga side. Hans vanaken is too limited for the prem surely? These are more the sorts of signings we'd have tried when we were skint. Hopefully we've gone up in the world now.

Terrence, did you need to say it three times so you could believe it? Probably true but in the Premier League you need so much more to make it. I wish Brillo head all the best, seems a likeable hard-working type, it just didn't work out for him.

Tosun is one of the worst players to wear a blue shirt: he can't dribble, shoot well, head a ball, run and out muscle the opposing centre backs. Whenever he started a match, Everton lost. Yet, Allardyce paid something near 27 million for his services. A complete waste of money that will never be recouped. I no doubt, he will be loaned out to run down his contract or allowed to leave on a free. It is players like him who have got teams relegated in the past. Comparing players like him is an insult to DCL, he can run, he can out muscle the opposition, heads well and does score goals and is just 23 years of age but cost just 1.5 million from Sheffield United. A bargain! If Everton could get all their players at 1.5 million pounds, Everton would not need a billionaire, but a millionaire.

Errr...Terence @ 76 (and 77...AND 78).

The fact you had to go back 18 months and Marco Silva's very first game in charge of Everton to offer an example in 'defence' of Tosun in comparison to DCL might be a bit of a clue that maybe, just maybe, we are wiser to retain Dominic rather than the very charming and likeable Cenk.

I'd suggest you also take a closer look from this season alone at our current number 9 to see many, MANY examples of intelligent forward play and finishing.

Terence#76. Unfortunately unless Tosun is in a team that creates the chances for him then we will never know whether he is a better finisher. What we do know is that DCL is quicker, better in the air and makes more intelligent runs than Tosun. There has been a remarkable improvement in DCL over the last couple of months, probably coinciding with playing 2 up front and closer coaching from Ferguson.

Mike #82. What good Everton team was Lukaku playing in when he was getting a goal every 2 games but cost the same money as Tosun?
Tommy Carter

@ 75 Robert.

Both of them would be a safe punt I think. They are showing all the signs for me of being able to make an impact at a higher level. It’s perhaps 12 months too late for Vanaken though.

I take your point Robert but when we were skint, but our signings were much more considered and as a result we seemed to have more hits than misses.

I’d rather the risk that kind of risk

Steavey#83. Our discussion has been on Tosun v DCL. Lukaku is completely different, the most clinical striker that we’ve had since Lineker and the most powerful that I can remember. If only he had DCL’s work ethic.

I mean, that Lukaku. What's he done since leaving Everton, the lazy good-for-nothing-no-mark?

How can anyone say anything nice about Tosun after he degraded himself with his support for a brutal dictator? And as for paying £27m for his 'services', it makes the Kroldrup deal look almost Colemanesque. Good riddance to second rate crap, and I hope he's never seen in an Everton shirt again
Mike Benjamin
88 Posted 13/01/2020 at 11:50:19
Mick#87. That is unfair. He was not good enough but you could not fault his effort whenever he played. We all know there are players who just don't put in the effort, they are the ones who deserve the that type of criticism

The Athletic are reporting that Crystal Palace will pay all of Tosun’s £100,000-a-week wages, as well as a £1m loan fee. There is also set to be an option included to make the move permanent for a fee of £20m.

That's an amazing achievement by Brands (presumably) if true. Sorry but the lad has never impressed me. The wages and fee are simply ridiculous.

Well unless he's had a whopping pay rise it's not true as he was on £65k a week here at Everton.
More journo shite methinks!

That's interesting if true, Michael. Makes a bit more sense as to why we loaned him... let's hope he scores a bunch because, if we got £20M for him, I'd be utterly amazed!

I like Tosun and think he has had a bad deal with us so far. He is the best finisher we have on the books and not half as bad as some make him out to be.

Strikes me as one of those players that were written off before he even kicked a ball. Hope he does well at Palace where he might actually play some games.

Hard to criticise him at Everton as he was never on the pitch but that doesn't stop some

Michael at 89. Have to agree with Steve Ferns and say that if correct then sterling work done by Marcel Brands. My only niggling concern is the higher the option price the less likely it is that Palace would 'bite' and take up the option. Why start with a '2' as opposed to a '1'? Maybe setting the price at £18M may have increased the chances of a permanent deal, only goals scored in a Palace shirt and time will tell. We do need to offload players and do need to raise funds so fingers crossed for goals and a deal at either price!
