Is Silva still holding out hope for Zouma?

| Friday, 02 August 2019 38comments  |  Jump to last

Some sources suspect that Marco Silva and Marcel Brands are still holding out hope for Kurt Zouma's return to Everton on a permanent deal.

This would seem to run contrary to all the noises coming out of the Chelsea camp since new manager, Frank Lampard, confirmed his desire for Zouma to remain a Chelsea player.

Everton are still in contact with Chelsea over a possible deal for Kurt Zouma but are looking at alternatives in case the Londoners dig their heels in and refuse to sell him this summer.

Paul Joyce from The Times has tweeted that a centre-back is the next priority for Marcel Brands and Marco Silva, followed by a winger and a right-back, the last position believed to be a loan acquisition rather than an outright purchase.

Apparently, word on the streets is also that Zouma is agitating for a move to us.

Hugh, where is your source?

Same Question, Hugh. Tell us it is a good source and not "someone who knows" ... please, please, please!

I think the "Zouma back to Everton" rumor is revolving around his tweet or something showing his boots with the #5 stitched in, which number he had with us but is taken by someone else at Chelsea.

Steven & Dermot,

Grand Old Team are reporting it but they're not being too free with their sources.

If Brands can pull this one out of the hat I will be extremely impressed. Keane and Gbamin look to be good signings but this would be some piece of work

The worry is a see-saw effect where we are now sorting out our lack of goals but that we will start leaking again , like 1st half of last season

Getting this one done will be impressive work.

I liked Zouma, I thought he did well. I remember a lot of people, not just on here, but other sites, podcasts and other media, voicing displeasure with his quality, during that very difficult period. I was always of an opinion that Zouma is solid. A 7 or 8 out of 10 player, but not spectacular. He's got a lot of physical attributes that are very important to us, not least his pace. But he also has a mistake or two in him. Similar, in some regards, to Joseph Yobo.

I just think that Zouma is going to be expensive, and that he is not worth the money that it would take to persuade Chelsea to sell him. There's talk of Llorente from Sociedad, but he will cost 50m euros. I would expect our scouts to find someone as good as this pair who would cost a maximum of 30m euros, and yet still have Zouma's pace.

It really is about a template, the blend of centre backs we want. So we need a centre back who is quick and at the moment partner Keane, who if he has someone who is good at recovering and can be aggressive, that brings his best attributes to the fore.

A partnership of Mina & Keane, terrifies me, Mina is unpredictable, often too bold and that will absolutely knock Keane’s game back. Uncertainty kills Keane. That really is his limitation.

So Zouma maybe but a centre back with those traits are what we need.

I'm with you Steve - wouldn't surprise me if Gbamin is used as our back up CB and that at most, we bring in a.n.other CB on loan.

Leave him where he is. Keane is improving and we have paid for Mina, they should be our first choice pairing. In the few games that he played last season Mina looked decent. We also have Holgate

Until we confirm that Centre- forward deal, any money available needs to go on goal scorers, not defenders

James, where’s the pace? Both Keane and Mina are dominant heading centre backs they are essentially same player.

As things settled last year we played a much higher line, this allowed keane to be aggressive against most teams as they only had one CF. Zouma covered and often in behind Keane.

When the team is structured like that, as a unit you absolutely need one guy to be very quick.

No way can we play that way with Mina and Keane. It leaves us deeper as a team and further from goal, the knock on effects of that are clear, when we turn the ball over we are miles away from goal. That makes transition with the players we gave much less likely to create a scoring chance.

A centre back like Zouma is a priority.

If Marcel can get Kurt on board our top 4 assault is fully primed.

If Kurt doesn't come, it will be whether Mina can give us the same solidity at the back. If he stays fit I think Mina will produce the goods.

John@13, i am in full agreement with your comment John. I like both Keane and Mina, i really believe Mina will mature into a top defender. Keane has already shown us what he can do. But he does need that cushion of someone with pace to cover for him.
Mina, or Keane at the back, just not together for me. I really hope Mr Brands can work some more magic for us before this window closes and provide us with a high quality, speedy centre back.

There can be no doubt that on last seasons form Zouma was head and shoulders better than Mina who looked clumsy, slow and lacked concentrat

The jury is out as to whether Mina can get to Zouma's level.

I would think from Silva's demands for a new CB he doesnt think so.

We should also remember we have lost Jags, Williams and Pennington as backup.

'Hey Everton, now Malcolm here are you now going to sign Zouma? #freezouma

We definitely need some more (recovery) pace in our CB pairing if we are to play a high line.

I can't see Zouma coming. In this window. Reckon we may get a loan or be tempted to use Gbamin there as cover and get Zouma in January, by which time he could well be out of the Chelsea starting line-up.

Or there may be another CB out there who Brands/Silva like with pace but not sure who it might be.

Loving this. #freezouma
Can't believe anyone wouldn't want him back. We need competition / cover (in all positions).

Fingers crossed.

David, I don't think there's any blue who doesn't want him back, but what's our top line? How much is the most you would pay?

For me, it's £30m. I believe Chelsea want £40m. I would not pay that. We can get someone else for £30m.

And yes, #FreeZouma!

No doubt M & M have a back up plan but Kurt must surely know that Everton will finish above Chelsea this season

The good businesss donee so far has been on realistic fees. I would splash the 55 to 60 mill on Zaha on Zouma. The Maguire fee has now push Zoumas value up by 10 to 15 million

Would have liked us to go forno Webster, who at 20 million I think is astute business. You see with Maguire that it doesn't take much for a young English centre half to get crazy figures

Think he would be an excellent player to battle it out with both Keane and Mina, with Gibson in reserve

We all enjoyed Zouma with us last season, and yes it would be good to get him back, but I am with Steve Ferns, that there should be a limit to the fee, assuming that Chelsea would allow to him to leave, which I doubt, while they have the Transfer Ban on incomings of their own.

How about Alfie Mawson, or Jamaal Lascelles?

Regrettably your right.

If and it’s a big if Zouma became available, the £30 we may have paid or other similar figure, has just gone up £10-£15m due to the Maguire transfer.

If we don’t get Zouma, hopefully Mina will step up to the plate.

Zouma is a must signing for us.

We need a quick centre half who is more comfortable on the ball than Zouma.
I'd move the earth to sign Ben Godfrey - he's quick and great on the ball. Still a bit raw but he's only played about 30 games as a CH, he's going right to the top.

Zouma would be great, Derek.

If you believe the thread, I wonder if there is something still in that. He seems to be following all things Everton on social media & whilst I don't always read too much into things, his new boot post was interesting.

Initials & number 5 (his Everton number), whereas his provisional Chelsea squad number is 15. I believe we're still to allocate the number 5.

Right, enough of me speculating over a picture of some football boots!!

Derek - the Zouma deal is going to happen. He is the only Chelsea player you can’t get on the back of their kit.

if a team struggling to stay in the top 4 sell us a player not good enough for them, then we are primed for top 4? Not sure I concur.

But our weaknesses include lacking a pacy CB and another forward. So Zouma and another forward - and sell the rather slow Tosun, and we are ready for a fight for 6th

Imperative that we #FreeZouma. Its right, fair and just.

The alternatives (apparently Rojo, Smalling, Jones) are too horrible to contemplate, and a travesty of justice.

Kurt Zouma is available in the Chelsea club shop and was given #15. Can we put that rumour (about not having a shirt) to bed please. Of course, we’ve given outgoing players numbers so it doesn’t mean that much.

Of course I'd welcome Zouma's return and see the value in continuity, but this notion of him being the be-all, end-all at centre back that we have to move heaven and earth to bring back at any cost is getting a bit much. If anything, Mina has the higher ceiling long-term.
Paul Bernard
35 Posted 05/08/2019 at 14:44:33
Zouma should be the priority now.

We should also throw in a cheeky £30m bid for Malcolm from zenit. The racist abuse he has reportedly received means we should be getting him to angle for a transfer. His place of work is untenable to work in.

I tried and you're right Chris. You can't currently buy a readymade Kurt Zouma shirt via the Chelsea store. Or a Timoue Bakayoko one, or a Kenedy one, or a Reece James one... Nobody should be getting excited because he's the "only" Chelsea player that you can't buy a shirt for yet.

Silva quoted in The Echo just now on Zouma.

"I don't like to talk about Zouma as he is not our player. It is not fair for me to comment. Zaha is a Chelsea player."

But, I will comment anyway with regard to the #FreeZouma campaign that

"it shows everything about what we as a club and me as a manager think about him. I have to respect the players we have here, even if they know we want one more."
