Smalling loan offer rejected

| Wednesday, 07 August 2019 27comments  |  Jump to last

Manchester United have reportedly rejected an approach from Everton to take Chris Smalling on loan for the season as the Blues' search for a centre-half continues.

Sky Sports News reporter Alan Myers, among others, has tweeted that the offer was turned down as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regards Smalling as a vital member of his squad.

United have this week concluded an £80m deal to bring Harry Maguire to Old Trafford from Leicester City and it is believed that Marcos Rojo is the more likely of United's defenders to depart before tomorrow's transfer deadline.

Everton had been hoping to persuade Chelsea to part company with Kurt Zouma this summer after the Frenchman's impressive loan spell at Goodison Park last season but the Londoners' transfer embargo looks as though it might dash the Toffees' hopes.

Antonio Rüdiger's recent surgery means that he will miss the start of the season, leaving new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard with David Luiz and Andreas Christiansen as his only experienced centre-halves following Gary Cahill's departure for Crystal Palace.

Would only want Maguire and no other defender from Man U

Get Ake and Doucoure and I will be really happy this window.

Good. Keep looking, Marcel. We don't want any second rate Man Utd defenders, no matter how desperate we are to beat the deadline.

The clock is ticking and this looks a bit desperate to me. Thank God they said no. It also suggests that Mina and Keane may be the first choice for the season and that we will go back looking for Zouma next summer.

Smalling not good enough. On a side note, just want to say how great it is that Moshiri is flexing his financial muscle and Brands making all these astute moves. We've made many good signings already; now throwing £70M at Palace for Zaha. That's pocket change for us now

Everton are a big club and now acting like it! Swagger! Financial clout! Big balls!

I haven't heard one Everton fan who wants this to happen but, for me, I would be fine with this for a few reasons.

1) If we can't get Zouma, then we need an experienced CB who is injury free to provide competition and capable of settling immediately.

2) The loan suggests it is a stop-gap arrangement, not a marquee signing.

3) The player's ability; I remember his season under Van Gaal when he was as good as any centre-half in the Premer League that season and even in his last 2 seasons he was reasonably solid despite the criticism.

4) Marco's coaching of defenders; our back 4 last season all improved defensively from what I'd seen before. Zouma was immense yet looked awful at Stoke, Keane was transformed from an average player, Digne was shocking at Barca defensively when I had seen him and even Coleman would always rely on his pace to cover his positional inadequacy yet he seemed not to get caught out much in the second half of the season despite his loss of pace.

Obviously if you compare Keane, Zouma and Smalling on last season's performance he clearly comes out worst but in my opinion if you judge the 3 on their performance in the season preceding Marco, then he would easily come out best.

Let me be clear: I'm not advocating us to sign Smalling but, at the same time, I don't think it would be the disaster it is being made out.

Clarence at 7, I love the direction of Brands and Silva, but £70M for Zaha is 'Steve Walsh behaviour'. We should offer Lukaku an escape route or go all in for Zouma.

I actually think he's be a great back-up defender. Bags of PL experience, great in the air and can score the odd goal too. Just prone to lapses in concentration. He's certainly no Titus Bramble though!

Phil #11, "prone to lapses" is diplomatically put.

To me he's the Boeing 737 of Prem CBs. Lovely in flight, right up until the crash.

We have moved on from the ‘special relationship’ with Manure. I.e., they take our best players & give us their dog shit.
He is from the same team that we dicked 4-0 only a few months ago!
This transfer rumour aside, I have never rated Smalling, always looks a disaster waiting to happen. I work with a load of Manc fans & they were pissed off that Manure rejected Everton’s offer, when they heard the news. Says it all really!

I agree with you. Bit of a scapegoat for Utd. I don't mind him, he would do a job. They are a complete mess, like we were a couple years ago, way too many players to make sense of. Strong squad player and maybe a safe option with little time remaining. Not that it will happen.

But something will...

He’s not as bad as made out but we should be aiming higher.

At last some good news regarding a CB, wouldn't have him, Miss Jones, or Spanish Red, for a gold clock and zero wages!

Derek I personally don't know why Umtiti isn't considered considering his availability and relationship with Barca. He is top class

Dont believe a word, Shane Duffy our ex is far better so cant believe we would even consider Smalling.

Surprised by the negativity here. I think it’s not a bad move given just a loan. He’s got tons of experience and won loads of medals. Can’t do that if you’re not any good.

They said no as it is.

Does mean we’re at least trying hard for another CB now that Zoumas not happening. Think we’ll really be in trouble with just Keane and Mina in the middle.

Thank god it was rejected. Can’t believe this had any legs. Wouldn’t want Smalling or Jones at Everton.

Although clearly yet to be proved, the signings so far look like real quality. Why on God's earth would we add Smalling or Rojo to this list? Not good enough doesn't even cover it.

Rojo is a dirty, dangerous defender & I wouldn't like him to be associated with our club. As for Smalling, 'Donkey' is the word that springs to mind. Just inadequate for the quality we want to bring to our club. No thanks. Next...!!
