Everton eye 'out of favour' Juventus defender

| Thursday, 29 April 2021 46comments  |  Jump to last
Everton are reportedly interested in signing Merih Demiral from Juventus if the Italian club look to raise funds this summer by moving the Turk on.

Demiral is considered by Andre Pirlo to be fourth-choice centre-half at Juve behind the likes of Leonard Bonucci and Mathijs de Ligt and the manager is apparently looking to shake his squad up after a disappointing 2020-21 season.

MailSport are one of the outlets reporting that, if the Blues come in with a bid of between £22m and £27m, they could secure Demiral who is 23.

Anyone got any views on this Turkish defender that we are getting strongly linked with from Juventus?

Tony

Seems a strange one. Only played 20 times for Juve — fourth choice. Built like Mina, apparently a big fan of Erdogan the Turkish fascist president. Maybe he’s a Godfrey who’s flown under the radar? But didn’t Carlo say he doesn’t want to sign a CB after Koubilay rumors?

Dave A., agreed.
Tony A., agreed.

Kieran and Tony, I watch most Juve games. Demiral is really impressive defensively -- young, strong, aggressive, good pace, excellent ballwinner in the air and on the ground, blocks shots, very intense. But he's not at all attack-minded, does nothing with the ball at his feet, not remotely the passer that Keane and Mina are. If you hate CBs who crab-pass sideways, Demiral will drive you crazy. That may be why a passing-oriented manager like Pirlo is willing to sell him.

Kieran, he's had a few injury problems which is probably why he's down the pecking order. He's rated very highly by Juve fans apparently, and was meant to be unsellable prior to these recent stories. If Mina is going in the summer I'd be happy with this signing as long as he's got his injury problems behind him.

Gavin

Thanks for the info. That explains why he’s been compared to Chielini — solid CB as you can get

Centre half not a top priority this summer so hopefully there is enough money in the pot for more important priorities if this has legs.

He and Deligt were supposed to be the natural heirs to Chiellini and Bonucci. He's an excellent player but seems to have injury issues. The injury and Juve's need to raise cash for rebuilding (and post COVID-19) is probably the only reason he's remotely gettable. Personally I'd rather persist with what we have and invest in our threadbare forward line. Buying Demirel won't help us win the games we've been dropping points in. A more potent attack is needed for that.

I fail to understand why we keep getting linked with CBs- in fact, I would rather we sell one of our CBs to generate some funds to strengthen other more pressing needs. Remember, we have 2 very decent CBs coming back from loan. Granted, Branthwaite and Gibson did not set the Championship on fire, but Branthwaite impressed everyone when he was called upon towards the end of last season. Gibson has had injury problems, but has played a fair few games for Reading and I am sure can be called upon in an emergency. Having said that, I think Carlo might know a little bit more about football than I do! So, if he wants to stock up with about 10 centre backs, I will still continue watching Everton play.

I think that is common in many of the Turkish footballers Kieran. They all have a habit of getting involved in politics.

I don't know a lot about him, so thanks Gavin & Robert.

If he's not going to provide the option of having the defence player higher up the pitch, then not needed.

I have repeatedly said central defence is not a priority, but if a genuine improvement that enables us to have that tactical option in games where appropriate, I'd take it.

As for Carlo, if his team selection poker is anything to go by, I would take his comments on transfers with an equal pinch of salt!

Another injury prone CB. Just what we need.

It is probably what a few of us see Ajay, although if true, then only Carlo knows.

With the centre backs we have, we generally defend well around our own box. But the moment we try to be more expansive and play a higher line, we are exposed. That could be what we are trying to address.

In fairness to Turkish footballers, they're in a very difficult position. The former Galatassary striker Hakan Sukur is now, I think, an Uber driver in Florida and estranged from his family in Turkey because he spoke out against the regime. The public support may be a case of trying to keep loved ones safe.

Can we have Rabiot instead?
Mike Gaynes
14 Posted 29/04/2021 at 16:28:31
Tony, as a Juve watcher, I would MUCH rather have Demiral than Rabiot. For all his dazzling skills, Rabiot produces nothing. I predict he would be a vastly overpriced disappointment at Goodison.

That said, the injury concerns about Demiral are valid. Thigh muscle problems, one after another. Strange at age 23.

Personally, I'm very happy with our current CBs and would much prefer we spend our money on the midfield attack and a right back.

Tony Everan
15 Posted 29/04/2021 at 18:38:53
Mike, To be honest I haven’t seen enough of Rabiot to have a firm opinion of him, the above was a bit of a flippant reaction. I do think we need an attacking midfielder with goals and assists in him and I too can’t think why we keep getting linked with centre backs, when the three positions you mention are surely the priority. It could be that they are expecting one or two departures in that department ?
Mike Gaynes
16 Posted 29/04/2021 at 18:58:45
Tony, that's my point about Rabiot. He's brilliant on the ball and fun to watch, but totally nonproductive. As an attacking midfielder in a passing club with Cristiano, Morata and Chiesa combining for 42 goals ahead of him, Rabiot has zero assists this season. None. And only two goals. Statistically he produces considerably less than Aaron Ramsey, who doesn't have half Rabiot's talent and plays much fewer minutes. It's Cuadrado who triggers Juve's attack, not Rabiot.

I have the same curiosity you do about our center-backs. We have four plus Branthwaite. and I think three are very good. Unless somebody wants to leave or Carlo is unimpressed by one of them, I'm bewildered too.

Robert Tressell
17 Posted 29/04/2021 at 19:24:14
Mike you'll have seen plenty more of Rabiot than me, but he seems like he's often the one left to do the dirty work for bigger stars. If he had Doucoure and Allan doing that for him, he'd have more freedom to be productive. He is really talented.
Andrew Keatley
18 Posted 29/04/2021 at 19:34:11
Mike (16) - I’d include Aaron Ramsey in a list of the best 10 or so midfielders that the UK has produced in the last 15 years. He’s had horrendous injury problems throughout his career. A deficit of talent has never been one of his problems, and I’m not sure there is anyone who has double his talent.

Erdogan fan? No thanks, we already got one.

Out of favour? No thanks, we got too many out of favour already.

Another name, please...

Don't need him. Move on.
Mike Gaynes
24 Posted 29/04/2021 at 23:40:29
Robert #17, perhaps so. I can only go on my inexpert view. Carlo certainly appears to like him, having managed him before, and City and Chelsea are rumored in for him. But personally I've never seen Rabiot do anything worth the rumored £30 million transfer fee and £120,000 a week.

Andrew #18, okay, I'll accept your assessment and correct myself to say current talent, given how little pace Ramsey has these days. I happen to like him a lot and he often shows well in his limited minutes... although he still misses lots of time with injuries.

Coutinho rumours still bubbling.
Kevin Prytherch
26 Posted 30/04/2021 at 09:59:21
I don’t see this defender coming, but If we did land some of the names we’re constantly linked with (and Coutinho), how would Aarons, Raibot and Coutinho fit into our current team?

Aarons is obvious, but we’d have Allan, Doucoure, Raibot, James, Coutinho, Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin all going for 6 spots. Would be interesting

Danny O’Neill

Depth of squad, Kevin, especially if we do qualify for Europe.
Howard Sykes
28 Posted 30/04/2021 at 13:31:34
We have more CB's than you could shake a stick at. RB is the area where (well one of the areas) we have a problem.
Thomas Richards
29 Posted 30/04/2021 at 13:52:18
Howard,

Three of the centre backs having the stick shaken at them are not good enough imo

Danny O’Neill
30 Posted 30/04/2021 at 13:55:17
But if you have the chance to improve in any position you do Howard. Especially if it takes you up a level.

Only one of those centre backs is top 4 standard. For all his improvement, we saw the flaws that remain in Michael Keane's game against Tottenham, ably assisted by Mason Holgate.

A priority? Maybe not. But if we have an opportunity to get a genuine top draw centre back alongside Ben Godfrey. Then Keane and Holgate are the backup as I suspect if one is coming in, it would be Mina going out as we are more likely to get interest in him.

Still Koulibaly for me. If I say it enough, click my heels 3 times and follow the yellow brick road, it may happen!

Robert Tressell
31 Posted 30/04/2021 at 14:04:27
I agree that none of Keane, Mina and Holgate look like an ideal partner for Godfrey. However, signing Demiral seems unlikely to win us the sorts of games we're dropping points in. After all, we're doing pretty well digging in against so called superior teams. Our big problem is seeing off mediocre and poor sides. Demiral might make us better but won't help with that particular problem.

Unfortunately, I don't think we'd get enough games out of Coutinho to help much either.

32 Posted 30/04/2021 at 14:17:39
A CB is only 4th on the list for me. If there are funds left after a quality RB, an excellent striker to complement DCL, and creative pace in midfield. Then if finances allow, upgrade the centre of defence.
If we leave it for another year it may well be that young Welch could make the leap, but probably not under current management. He's a big lad already and well thought of, just needs to fill out a bit.
Danny O’Neill
33 Posted 30/04/2021 at 14:25:13
Absolutely understand the priorities Stephen and wouldn't disagree.

I just don't know if I can stomach another season of being camped around the edge of our own box and defending deep to suit the defenders we have.

Alan Johnson
34 Posted 30/04/2021 at 15:37:31
Looks like the Coutinho rumours could have legs. Thought he was ace at liverpool. Unsure why he's not succeeded with two top European clubs?
Danny O’Neill
35 Posted 30/04/2021 at 15:54:10
The question is. Will he be an improvement on what we have? Assuming he's being brought in a a number 10 who could also play wide, I think he adds value and creativity to the squad.

Believe it all, when and if he is confirmed either in a Chippy near Goodison, or Finch Farm, or is seen holding the shirt up with his name on it! 😜

If he frequents the chippy it may explain why he’s never match fit

Derek Knox

Kieran, I didn't say what size the shirt, he may hold up, would be XL, XXL, or XXXL ? 😂
Tony Everan
39 Posted 30/04/2021 at 19:59:44
It’s all making sense now, he wants out of Barcelona because the shithole is devoid of a decent chippy. Messi thinking of moving to a posh part of Stockport for the same reason.
Colin Glassar

Right now, I'd take any defender who can defend and use the ball with intelligence. Something our current bunch seem incapable of.
Matthew Williams
41 Posted 02/05/2021 at 00:43:53
No thanks, let's try young Branthwaite instead next to Godfrey,a young, balanced centre half pairing at long last who can learn together for the long term future of the club.
Danny O’Neill

But inexperienced Matthew.

Koulibaly rumours again today.

Too young, too raw, nowhere near ready Matthew.

Justin Doone

We need top class players for next season, not the next potentially top class player ie Moise Kean!

So forget age, forget investing for the future, please can we sign at least 4 top class players.

A forward / winger. A defensive midfield general, a play maker and a right back.

All need to have top basic skills ie ball control, passing, reading of the game, and pace, strength, energy, high work rate, team player, love for Everton.

What could be easier?

Kieran Kinsella
45 Posted 10/05/2021 at 00:30:37
Juve down to 5th, they made need to sell to raise money for the ESL. They may also reconsider the criteria and invite other historically great clubs like Preston and Notts County if they hope to win.
Jay Harris
46 Posted 10/05/2021 at 01:20:41
Isn't Rabiot rumoured to be a bad egg in the dressing room who criticises everyone and everything?

I haven't seen much of Demiral but apparently he is a good last-ditch blocker in the mould of Jagielka. I can't, see Carlo building a team around him.

Personally I would like us to stop buying mid-level players and go out for top-class players like Leon Bailey.
