On Field Leadership – Where is it?

Whilst focus on off-field leadership clearly merits attention in these darker days, I think a lack of on-field leadership is also a real issue and doesn't seem to have had enough attention. It has meant that Seamus Coleman has played games this season that perhaps he wouldn't have – just for leadership reasons.

Looking at the squad, leadership seems to be in very short supply, notwithstanding the number of points gained from losing positions this season. Someone who might have had obvious attractions in this regard when he signed, Michael Keane, would seem to be clearly lacking in the necessary resilience.

Does Ben Godfrey have potential as skipper? Perhaps Dominic Calvert-Lewin even?

I know that financially we are moving to recruit players with potential for resale value (a good long-term policy), but there is now a pressing short-term need. We are desperate for some experience (with quality) currently – especially in central defence and midfield.

If it's okay for Chelsea to bring in Thiago Silva (now age 37), we should look and see if we can get a half-season or more out of the right veteran from somewhere (on loan or a free). Suggestions are welcome.

ps: Is Gbamin now a lost cause? How about loaning him out somewhere to see if regular game time can restore some of the potential he was thought to have pre-injury. What's there to lose?

When Gbamin came on against Chelsea and Hull, he was no worse than anything else we've fielded this season. He should be played alongside Allan and Doucouré in a midfield 3.

It's got to be worth try... surely!

Just put this in another thread Ashley.

We need a 3 man midfield!
Davies, Delph, Doucoure all injured
Gomes and Allan not in the best of form.
Gbamin still can’t get a game! Should we offer him a pay off? Is his place on the bench hindering the likes of Warrington?

My own opinion is I think he could be worth a run in a 3 man midfield?
