Leeds and Leicester playing tonight. So the pressure will be on Thursday's game one way or another after it.

Jerome, I'm thinking a draw is the best result here, or failing that a Leicester win. From the games I have watched recently, Leeds look the more vulnerable and likely to capitulate, their defence is very dodgy.

Makes me feel sick thinking about it…

Yes, Tony, A 0-0 with ten cards or a 0-5 to the Foxes. Leeds could really tighten up another home disaster when they desperately needed 3 points.
And I guess I'll go along with the happy clapper are that just joined in. ;)

Make that a goal-less draw, Rob. We don't want either of them adding to their goals-scored tally.

Joe, in fairness Villa have put together a tidy side since they got promoted back to the PL. Having spent a couple of seasons in the championship they looked to have learned from past lessons. IF the worse was to happen to us, then that's a model we have to look at emulating.

The depressing thing is even if we stay up it 'll be more of the same next season minus a couple of saleable assets and no money to improve the squad with a very basic limited manager in charge.
Posted
25/04/2023 at
20:40:35
Yep, Emery is good manager, didn't get a fair crack of the whip at Arsenal, but they were battling relegation the season they came back up and have built on from there. The seasons leading up to them going down had all the hallmarks of what we currently are. Gambling massively, backfiring and selling of your assets season upon season. They got found it in the end. Oh and owner who hadn't a scooby of running a football club.

We need at least 2 wins before the Bournemouth game imo.
That means pulling something unexpected, be that wins against Newcastle, Brighton, or Wolves. It also requires an absolute do not lose against Leicester.
Seems, as things stand, as unlikely. But if we up the intensity, we can do it. Bournemouth managed some unexpected wins when they had been written off. A couple of Calvert-Lewin goals and powerful energetic midfield performances from Gueye, Doucoure and Onana.
We're not down till we're down.
Win against Newcastle, Draw Leicester, Draw Brighton, Win Wolves, Win Bournemouth 11 points. End the season on 39. We could even surprise everyone, get a point against City and turn the title race. Finish on 40.
COYB, end the season 7 games unbeaten and rebuild.

Soren,
Sam took over West Brom when they were in 19th in mid-December. He couldn't save them and it burst his bubble as unrelegatable.
Funnily enough, West Brom made a mess of January and couldn't get any transfers over the line so, in that respect, he was in a similar scenario to Sean.
I am not saying Sean is some kind of Svengali but I think he has as much chance of saving us with this squad as anyone else does.

If we lose to Newcastle, then Leicester v Everton is the biggest game of the season by a country mile.

Leeds still to play Bournemouth, that could go any way.

A draw is a good result. Neither leaving daylight between us and them. Leeds also have some really tough games coming.
Thursday under the lights is where Escape to Victory starts for us. Newcastle can afford to lose a couple and still comfortably get Champions League football next season.
Looking forward to it.

I think that is the best result.
Beat Newcastle on Thursday and we leapfrog Leicester and Leeds, with the same games played.
Beat Leicester and we are, in my opinion, one win away from safety on 34 points.
With Brighton, Wolves and Bournemouth to play.
I forgot Man City. A point at home. Osman to get the equaliser.
We are doing this.

Danny @99,
We're relying on a TV pundit to get us an equaliser against Man City, well I suppose we are in very desperate situation. We do have to beat either Newcastle or Leicester to give ourselves a fighting chance; we need a victory somewhere, somehow and the sooner the better.

Martin, we have a decent chance now with some better players back, it will also give one or two better options from the bench which could be important too to change a game. I am waiting on news of Seamus as him being back will be a major plus at right-back.
I've watched Leeds, and I think they will continue to struggle so it's all up for grabs and probably going to the last day.

That Leeds result was good for us. It keeps them both in touch with us and with Leicester still to face us it could be a real decider.
It's in our own hands now and if we can get something against the Barcodes it would be a bonus.
The return of some players could be just the thing as we face these crunch games.

Bit strange to me…
Initially Stones looks offside but the VAR gives him onside. Thing is, the VAR line is drawn from a camera angle on the goalline which shows he's onside by gnat's hair.
If the VAR line would have been taken from a camera in line with Stones, I doubt it would have been given.

The play has to be clear and obvious to overrule the call on the field.
Anyone looking at the line drawn by the VAR can see it's not near at a right angle or perpendicular to be 100% sure Stones was onside.
Stupid overruling! I mean, are these people even remotely educated making these calls???

It's not the Fulham result in isolation – it's the losses to Southampton and Leicester at home and the draw with Forest at home too.

Why would anyone expect any favours in the first place?
Football is life, and life is all about taking care of yourself. I'm going to Goodison tomorrow with the same feelings that I've had since the Crystal Palace game finished. We have got to go and win, so if Everton lose, then I'm certain they will be slaughtered.
Some people want to start criticizing our team just because other teams are fighting for their lives, which is exactly what they should be doing!
Football is hard enough, especially when you're struggling, so if people don't want to try and get behind the team whilst they've still got a massive chance of getting out of this horrible relegation battle, I don't understand why they even follow us.
On 31 April 2022, Everton were in the Bottom 3 and 5 points from safety. On 1 May, Everton beat the European Champions and started clawing themselves back towards safety. It wasn't pretty… but it was raw, it was passionate, and this is how we must approach tomorrow night.
I'm looking forward to it, although I'm hoping posters on ToffeeWeb are negative before the game, because we always seem to do better when they're negative rather than positive. We will see…

Brighton will be on the beach now until Everton go down there, of course.
Losing to Southampton at home, Wolves at home, Leicester at home and Fulham at home is criminal. Our home form has saved us in years gone by but, since that crazy season in lockdown where we were good away but awful at home, we've been rubbish at Goodison.
I hate to say it but we are one of the worst teams in the Premier League and have been for a while. We aren't in a false position.

I'm extremely concerned about the future of Everton Football Club. This could be the end, it's that serious. The drop in revenues next year for a club that is operationally leveraged will be crippling. And if we don't bounce back - which I doubt - it gets even worse. The entire (overpaid, underperforming) squad will be let go in a fire sale. I can't see this pathetic management team doing a Burnley. More like a QPR or a Sheffield Wednesday.
All to feed one man's ego.

Ian @156,
I agree with you. I can't remember the last time we've gone away from home and tried to win a match. Personally, I've stopped looking at away fixtures thinking we can win any of them because we never do.
It's always been about just not losing, has been for over 20 years... the attitude of a draw away from home is good enough.
The dialogue is always about managing expectation, about stopping the opposition from playing because it is they who are so strong.
I have to get my head around the state the club is in under Kenwright and Moshiri and the annual lack of drive and motivation from the players at home instilled into them from the boardroom. I'd be in a strait-jacket if I expended the same level of emotion on the away games too.
I don't honestly know how our superb 3,000 - 5,000 travelling fans manage it. I'd need to double the dose of my heart meds, Kenwright & Co should be kneeling at their feet.

I don't "fancy" us (great term, Brits) to get anything tomorrow. Newcastle are excellent and we've been, well, poor.
Looking at the remaining fixtures, we have to beat Leicester, Bournemouth, and one of Brighton / Wolves who will be on the beach. That's 9 points, and 37 will keep you up this year.
If we get points tomorrow, it's massive. But even if we don't, we have winnable games in front of us to keep us up.

I bet Southampton fans aren't giving up yet and they're in a worse position than we are. I've never known such a constant chorus of 'we're rubbish', 'we're going down' from Evertonians so often.
What is to be gained from it? Does it make you feel better? Do you feel superior for stating it over and over again, as if you've discovered the meaning of life?
I totally admit, that I'm far more nervous about our situation than I was last season, but I refuse to give up until it is decided one way or the other.

Colin -
This morose tone is killing me.
Everton will not go down with a "whimper". From all I've read and seen since 2007, this is not the Scouse way. Everton will not quietly fade into the sunset. They'll fucking go down fighting, if they go down at all.
Last season:
Iwobi goal, Keane goal, Richarlison goal, Calvert-Lewin goal. A literal mob of humanity in the streets with blue flares greeting the team coach. Pitch invasions. Pink fucking sweater guy killing time. Chants and songs loud enough to break my eardrums while watching on TV in America. The list goes on.
Fuck this attitude. Fight like hell goddamit. If you're there, don't let the players give up!
We're not going down. Just because things look bleak doesn't mean we capitulate. When it's dark, do you raise the white flag, or go to war?
I've never, ever seen an Evertonian raise that white flag. Sure, they'll bitch a lot and use (absolutely brilliant) dark humo(u)r. But give up? Go out with a whimper?

Geoff @205,
If I was a complete realist, I would have given football a swerve; however, I am realistic but refuse to give up just yet.
I never once said that other people couldn't have an opinion, I was merely highlighting how disheartening it is to be constantly told what most of us already know, that we aren't very good. Fans of Forest were apparently up for it tonight, and I don't know whether their players responded to that or whether it was the other way around,
Many thought we were dead and buried before the turn of the year, yet here we are with an opportunity to leapfrog a few sides and then another opportunity on Monday to gain some momentum. We may not win either game or indeed another game this season, but we don't actually know yet and I just find it unproductive to keep saying it's all but over.

Shame on Brighton for losing after scoring first but they did have a tough game against Man Utd. However, we are now almost rock bottom and, with Barcodes on tap tomorrow and the Foxes away at the weekend, we could never have been in a more direr situation for points.
However, with maybe a few guys back, Dyche might be able to get something extra from them (as if they couldn't do it themselves).
We just need an early goal and some stalwart defending as I am sure the Barcodes will be all out to get into the Champion's League and it will be a nervy game once again but let's hope it's a hell of a lot better than the Fulham game.

We do desperately need to find a route to goal. Calvert-Lewin gives us some hope (that's if he plays – when does he ever play consecutive games?) but there's more to it than pumping it long and hoping.
Our striker woes have clouded the issue that we're not trying to solve that problem in our way of playing. We're the lowest scorers in the Premier League and that's been the case for a long time – including when we appointed a new manager and came up with a guy who could make us 'hard to break down' when our defensive record was half decent!
Dyche has brought a bit of fight. What we needed was a bit of an attacking plan. I hope to God that a bit of fight ends up being enough. We are incredibly fortunate that the bottom end of the table is so poor that a points tally in the mid-30s will probably be enough.
It's only a low bar that gives us a chance. We really should be gone.

The bottom line is that the majority of supporters are up for it with a positive attitude.
The major problem is the 11 players on the pitch; we expect them to become in tune with the supporters and up their game. They have let us down before and it has now become a time that we can't be let down, as there is very little time remaining if we do not get a positive result.
We have had too many must-win games that the players have not turned up to. The fans will have done their part; it will be up to the players to do theirs.

Barry
"The number 555 is often seen as a symbol of positive change and new beginnings, as well as a message of encouragement and support from your angels. It can serve as a reminder to trust in the journey and know that you are being guided and supported on your path."

Never gonna give, Never gonna give it up, never gonna give it up, Everton.
Rick Astley on repeat ShitAstlery
