Season › 2024-25 › News Phil Jagielka and Steven Naismith score in Everton Legends’ victory over Roma Legends Anjishnu Roy 10/08/2025 5comments | Jump to last Everton Legends put the finishing touches to the historic curtain-raiser at Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-0 win over AS Roma Legends. Played immediately after the men’s team lost 1-0 to Roma in their first match in front of fans at the new stadium, Phil Jagielka and Steven Naismith scored to send the near-53,000 Toffees in attendance back home happy. Jagielka, wearing the captain’s armband, got his name on the scoresheet after meeting Leighton Baines’ corner after 22 minutes. Naismith doubled the advantage less than 10 minutes later after substitute Jose Baxter did the hard work. It was a day of celebration for the club and their fans who got to see many of their heroes, including Jagielka, Baines, Steven Pienaar, Tony Hibbert, and Yakubu, among others, wearing the royal blue shirt one more time. The loudest cheers of the day were reserved for Peter Reid, the manager of Everton Legends, in this friendly. Towards the dying minutes of the game, the two-time league winner took off his jacket to reveal an Everton shirt and subbed himself on. Every touch of Reid received a delightful response from the crowd. The Toffees will return to the new waterfront stadium once again on August 24 when Everton face Brighton on the second matchday of the Premier League. I can't get over how much younger Steven Pienaar looks than when he actually played for us - I will have a few pints of whatever he has been on! Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 2 Posted 10/08/2025 at 13:38:54 I thought it looked like he had gone from Pie,nah to Pie,Ja.There again, I an bigger, older and less fit so it was just a cheap shot - something you can't get at BMD. Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 3 Posted 10/08/2025 at 14:01:30 And if anyone is interested.Youngest in the starting XI - Walcott just 36Oldest? Marcus Bent 47Average age? Just over 42.Lost track of the subs - Jimmy Mc, Baxter, Vaughan, Yak, Gibson, Nais, Oumar and of course Peter Ried.Baxter 33, Oumar 35, Jimmy V and Darren G 37, Nais 38.I think we took it more seriously than Roma! Mike Gaynes 4 Posted 10/08/2025 at 14:41:55 Just think how you're feeling if you have guys like this in your over-35 team on Saturdays! Ed Prytherch 5 Posted 10/08/2025 at 15:04:08 I bet it was a lot of fun, particularly with Reidy on the field. I bet he had to pull in some of his aggression. There are certainly some characters among that bunch. My lasting memory of Jimmy Mac was when he got a red card within minutes of coming on as a sub. The ref reported that Jimmy called him a fucking cheat. Jimmy appealed and said that the ref did not understand his accent and he only told him that he was fucking shite.
