Brighton are one point behind us, and have an absolute doddle of a run-in.
They've also won five of their last six games. Their patience in putting up with a load of draws mid-season as their new kids bed in always seems to pay off in the end. They have a patient crowd.

It's okay, Kevin, the interview is over, John, gave you the job yesterday and told you to start on Monday!
Fulham would have gone level on points with us, Christy, and now I'm beginning to worry about the form guide considering Liverpool beat them last week and yet they have just gone and got a point at Brentford -- just like we did last week!
My own positive opinion is that we should be a lot fresher than Liverpool, and just needed that fixture last week to blow off the cobwebs and get us going again.

Man City v Arsenal tomorrow could well decide who wins the Premier League. If City win, they'll likely be level on Wednesday night; if Arsenal win, they'll be pulling away again.
Arsenal have an easier run-in on paper, but I reckon Man City win tomorrow, then they'll win the league.
And that's obviously the 2nd most important match on the Sunday schedule.

I thought it was just the liberal minded people who were softer on drugs like cannabis, Kevin, but maybe you're correct because I remember reading an article years ago saying that Thailand might have the best growing conditions in the world. The next time I went to that beautiful country, they were legally selling it in the shops.
Thinking about it logically, it was Ecstasy combined with cannabis that helped to get rid of football hooliganism in this country for a little while, so if the authorities aren't happy, then maybe they should consider this!!

Looking at the Championship makes me realise what could have happened to Everton if Sean Dyche hadn't kept us up. Then had we faced a points deduction the very next season whilst in the Championship, when I look at what has happened to Leicester City.

The conspiracy theory I think Steve is referring to is that the god awful mess the world currently finds itself in did not happen organically, but by design. That there is a powerful billionaire class manipulating and undermining sovereign governments, and removing steadily the freedoms of the populations of the world.
This is shown through impositions on free speech, the incoming Digital ID, borderless borders, mass migration, constant war, endless debt and the over promotion of pornography, gambling, abortion, assisted dying, and constant war.
Soon, there will be one shop, one app, no jobs... and if you want food or to go travelling 5 miles beyond your front door, you'd best make sure you've been a good boy or these 'privileges' may be denied you at the drop of a hat.
Denial of banking services alone can be catastrophic and can be done at the whim of the US, as Francesca Albanese has found out recently to her cost.
Darker interpretations speak of population reduction through such things as the Covid jabs, and the famines which may now be weeks away. History is littered with these 'accidents'.

Michael, if you're truly curious about the subject and not simply sneering out of rote or deliberately flashing your breathtaking ignorance, you might pick up
A History of the Jewish People by Paul Johnson, the legendary British (yes, Michael,
British) historian who passed just a couple of years ago.
He extensively discusses the evolution of the term "globalism" (in multiple languages, not just English) as it first related to the early debates over Zionism in the early 1880s (that's nearly 150 years) and became a mainstream term in Nazi propaganda of the late 1930s. And today can find the word being used in an antisemitic context by every fucking far-right media source from 4Chan to your own Nigel Farage, whose frequent utterings of the name George Soros are never without the "globalist" addendum.
Therefore your snotty condescension about the proper use of a highly charged English word is directed at a world-renowned English historian and founder of New Statesman magazine, not some Yank you don't like.
So "have you no fucking shame?" makes you look pretty fucking stupid, doesn't it, Michael?

Mike - 73:
'Paul Johnson does not use the specific term "globalism" in A History of the Jews (1987), as the word only gained widespread political and academic currency in the 1990s and 2000s. However, the book is deeply concerned with the global impact and internationalist role of the Jewish people throughout history.'
Did you read a different book of the same name written by a man of the same name?
Regarding the term 'Legend':
For readers of history and fans of intellectual debate, Paul Johnson was a "legendary" figure known for his prodigious output of over 50 books and his dramatic political shift from the socialist left to the Thatcherite right.
While fans see him as a "monument of genius," many academic historians are hostile toward his work, citing a perceived neoconservative bias and lack of scholarly rigor.
Things to look at in the above are...
'intellectual debate' (This is a football forum not generally known for that sort of thing, no offence, it includes me)
Thatcherite I need not say anymore, especially in a forum where the majority of people are from or live in the city of Liverpool!
Results going well so far with Untied going one up!

Brent @62, I am another who never had a clue, and as much as I don't like bullying or racism, I often think that when people use the race card, they are actually creating division on purpose simply because it suits their own agenda.

"Globalist" is frequently used as a coded, anti-Semitic slur, particularly within far-right, alt-right, and white supremacist ideologies. While the term has a legitimate dictionary definition referring to international economic or political policy, it is often employed in modern political discourse as a dog whistle — a term meant to convey a hidden meaning to a specific group — that echoes historic prejudices against Jewish people.“
BTW - I'm not anti-Semitic but I am anti-Israel. Netanyahu is turning Israel into the bad guys.

Decent, Mark, very decent of you. I didn't want to rekindle the fire by saying the wrong thing.
It is one of the weird challenges of the 21st Century: Do you abandon a word or brand when it has been adopted by an ill-motivated contingent.
Some people may not be aware of the sub-context, or the brand may not actually support its adopted symbolism. I think New Balance had that problem 10 or 15 years ago. More currently, I see many people, clearly on the right, wearing Patagonia brand stuff when they know the owner is vehemently against their philosophy.
It is a type of cultural takeover of a space, to overpopulate it to modify its meaning or significance. Google-bombing, remember Santorum?, was also an aspect of this type of cultural space takeover.
It's complicated, maaaan.

There's no credibility to be afforded any racist person, but for our chief Jewish fan to interpret a non-explicit comment from a fellow fan as anti-Jewish is just bonkers as far as I'm concerned.

I reckon the teeny tiny percentage of Spurs fans who are actually Jewish wouldn't mind the banter... because it's exactly that.
The historical wrongs the Jews have been on the receiving end of is diabolical. I'm sure we don't deny it. But this is football, entertainment, storybook back pages.
Leave the politics to the geniuses like Trump, no??
Sorry if I've overstepped or been niave.

I wonder if I say kopites are gobshites, Will I be considered anti-scouse?
It's all silly. Leave the policy to the politicians.

@michael Kendrick: really?
You're prepared to have this drunken, political nonsense on your site on the eve of one of the biggest Merseyside derby games for a long time?

Many words have multiple meanings. The same word in different contexts can be offensive or legitimate. We should pay attention to that.
Tap most people today, and ‘globalist' would mean exactly that for them – e.g. global economic policy or, Heaven forbid, Mike Gaynes, what is now called in some circles ‘Global History'. So, there is a certain arrogance in claiming that the word ‘globalist' matters for one reason only and means one thing only.
‘Therefore your snotty condescension about the proper use of a highly charged English word is directed at a world-renowned English historian and founder of New Statesman magazine, not some Yank you don't like'.
Sorry, Mike Gaynes, this is where your own grasp of some of the issues at hand is thin. Unlike some others, I would never slam you for your sensitivity towards the term ‘globalism' and what it means to you. However, your sense of its history and historians is far from convincing.
Paul Johnson, 'the legendary British (yes, Michael, British) historian and a world-renowned English historian and founder of New Statesman magazine, not some Yank you don't like'.
Erm, The New Statesman was founded in 1913 – Johnson was born 15 years later – by prominent Fabian socialists and deeply consequential historians Sidney and Beatrice Webb, with a lot of financial backing from George Bernard Shaw.
Johnson, on the other hand, did his five-year-stint at The New Statesman (1965-70), as you noted, a heated time to say the least as Johnson has his Road-to-Damascus moment turning on his colleagues and expressing ever more right-wing views.
The parting of ways was – diplomatically – acrimonious, and before long Johnson fell into the cliched role of the new convert, praising Thatcher to the highest heavens, expressing admiration for Pinochet – who he actively defended in his extradition case – and also for the rabid antisemite Franco.
In the early 1980s, Rupert Murdoch got Johnson on board to write for the right-wing rag, The Sun, yes the same rag that blamed the victims for Hillsborough.
I think you made a somewhat strange choice when summoning Johnson to be your main source of ‘academic' support, Mike Gaynes. Johnson became and was a committed neoconservative whose work was disparaged by academics not necessarily for that, but for its ideological bias and motivation and woeful academic standards, and much else besides. No ‘historian' who writes over 50 books can ever be rigorous and attentive across the board. It's not possible.
Johnson is ‘legendary', Mike Gaynes, but not for reasons that you would want him to be batting for your team. A History of the Jewish People is a much-derided book, taken apart and rightly slammed by historians, including Jewish historians. I might also suggest, Mike, that the key terms for the Nazis were not ‘globalism' but ‘internationalism', ‘cosmopolitanism', ‘international finance' and ‘global Jewish conspiracy'.
Written with respect, Mike.

Was it Wilde or Shaw?' The answer appears to be: both.
In The Canterville Ghost (1887), Wilde wrote: ‘We have really everything in common with America nowadays except, of course, language'. However, the 1951 Treasury of Humorous Quotations (Esar & Bentley) quotes Shaw as saying: ‘England and America are two countries separated by the same language'.
Of course, it is axiomatic that any unattributable saying will be attributed to Wilde, Shaw, Churchill, Shakespeare or Confucius.

A very interesting read early on this Sunday morning, Paul. I found history boring until I got a teacher who made it very, very interesting, because I enjoyed that he taught without bias.
That's my worry. Mark M, quoted something from AI, I know this because I read the same thing after Mike posted, and although I delved a little bit deeper and found out a little bit more, my worry is that it's not going to be long before history is re-written because nothing is sacred in this ever intense world.
It's all about speed now and standards don't seem to be improving because of this, but never forget that we can learn more about life from history than anything else imo…. And with it being derby day, let's hope we are all singing about knowing our history, at 4 pm today.

Mike G doesn't need to apologise for anything.
Some internationally obtuse comments on here all the lines of “we're British, the term doesn't have the same meaning.”
I knew what the term meant as an anti-Semitic code word. More importantly, Kevin definitely did. He used it with intention before retreating into his usual bluster and fake innocence.
It is pathetic and shameful that he is allowed to get away with it.

Claiming Antisemitism is a political tactic claimed worldwide to gain sympathy and reduces its effectiveness against actual incidents of hatred toward Jews (see the wonderful Rabbi Shmuley for many examples)
Weaponising the use of the word antisemitism weakens the term and is antisemitic in itself. Happy Derby Day, Blues!

Steve this is the second time you've accused me of being a racist. You are actually an arsehole mate.
I mentioned cannabis and globalism specifically as I had the Canadian situation in mind, the fact that that awful country was pushing this appalling drug on its citizens. There may be a significant Jewish cohort in Canada, but if there is, I'm not aware of it.
I am aware that criticism of Jews can be framed using a globalist framework. So what? Are we not supposed to talk about the clear problems of globalism, just because there are certain racists who use these codewords?
That's like saying we can't talk about mass migration cos all the racists oppose it.

Caused the usual chaos, the use of the word.
It is used as a political tool by some. The go-to answer when any criticism is aimed.

Enough for today about racism
just today. I would be amazed if there is one racist on here.
Though the exchanges.makes me why I love TW Paul...was nice to be educated and you and MG made me spend an hour looking into it.
My view? Well I have/had a decent intellect and all bits and bobs of DSC/MSC and other work ones.
But to be frank, it was to pass time with my beau who is a Liverpool fan.
Next? Absolute fear. Garden? Pub? Exercise?
She will say they "woz robbed' when we win folks.
So..Garden. Then pub and exercise?
We will see.
Stay hopeful folks.
Hope is a crushing thing.

I must be careful not to use the expression 'Red Shite' again

My gawd... the Emptihad.
Loads of empty seats at the back of the upper stand.
And Cherki just dribbles through, brilliant.
Now that is what I want to see every single game from Ndiaye.

MK, the wonders of AI -
'The upper tier of the North Stand at the Etihad Stadium is currently empty due to ongoing construction for a major £300 million expansion project, which is adding 7,000 seats and is not yet fully completed or officially opened. While sometimes mocked, these empty seats are a consequence of the redevelopment work rather than lack of demand, with the new capacity expected to exceed 60,000 upon completion'

The expansion of the Etihad for £300M for the addition of 7000 seats is incorrect, it also includes a hotel.
More revenue for Man City.
