The 2026 World Cup - Day 25
Sunday night's World Cup action features some fascinating clashes, including England's visit to the iconic Azteca Stadium.
First up, it's Brazil vs Norway, as the five-time world champions take on Erling Haaland and co. Brazil have not quite convinced under ex-Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti and were fortunate to sneak past a valiant Japan side in the Round of 32.
That said, Vinicius Junior has finally come alive in a major tournament for the South Americans, with Matheus Cunha and Bruno Guimaraes providing able support.
Norway are back on this stage for the first time in 28 years, but have impressed to date. It helps, of course, to have Haaland in your ranks, with the Manchester City goal machine making a push for the Golden Boot.
In the early hours, Jordan Pickford and England must handle altitude and a hostile home crowd if they are to progress to the quarter-finals.
Mexico are unbeaten in 13 years in competitive games and the Azteca, and have lost only twice in 89 games since its opening in 1966. However, the calibre of opposition has somewhat shewed those statistics...

Balogan's suspension lifted. Every country needs to walk out of the tournament right now.
Under FIFA rules the US membership should be suspended due to Government interference.

It has always been corrupt - and the annoying thing is how quiet everything is kept - take 1966 as an example. I attended all 3 Group games at Goodison and all 3 at Old Trafford (Brazil, Hungary, Portugal and Bulgaria - Pele, Eusebio et al). Went to the North Korea v Portugal with the Asian going 3-0 until Eusebio scored 4 in their 5-3 win. Great team and Goodison/Merseyside took to them warmly. England next - at Goodison...hang on though, let's switch it to Wembley for "safety" reasons - Englishman Stanley Rous was FIFA President, makes me wonder how and why that decision came about, eh? So, England fans, stop whinging and whining about cheating, or ground problems - you are even more guilty regarding this WC cheating crap - I often wonder why the media, etc., never mention anything other than how great Ingerlund were in 66!!!!!!!!

The Portugal v England semi-final was scheduled to be played at Goodison Park. However, on the day before the game was to be played, English officials decided to change the venue to be Wembley Stadium, with the reason being Wembley's larger capacity.
This forced the Portuguese National Team to get back on the team bus and make the journey from Liverpool to London. The Portuguese players ended up only getting 2-3 hours of sleep, heavily decreasing them from their peak performance.
During the match, it was evident the Portuguese weren't playing to their full strength due to the lack of sleep, which eventually caused England's star striker Bobby Charlton to net two goals. The game finished 2-1, with Eusebio getting a late goal.

Stanley Rouse was quite up front about why he switched the World Cup Semi-Final in 1966.
He never said it was for safety reasons. He said he did it for "commercial reasons"... in other words, he wanted to generate more money. There's never been any secret as to how and why the decision came about.
There was clearly a measure of greed involved in the decision, but the England players had no say in it, neither did the manager. They too had their plans disrupted.
Portugal were exhausted after their lung-bursting efforts to turn around a 3-0 North Korean lead but the fact is they were just not up to beating that England team. The late consolation goal they got from a Eusebio penalty was about as much as they deserved. They were pretty much a one man team and England were better in just about every other position.
I don't see any England fans whinging and whining about cheating.
The US can't be accused of cheating simply because a controversial decision has gone their way.
The players and the managers have no say in these decisions. They simply have to live with the rough and the smooth.

Stop embarrassing yourself. You accuse others of Whinging and whining about cheating. Yet here you are SIXTY years on. Still bitching about a conversation between Ramsey and Rouse that exist only in your head.
I don't care about England winning the world cup, but it does make me smile how much it upsets you.
Both teams had to adjust to a decision based on pure greed - England couldnt train either and also had to change hotels at less than a days notice.
The game has always been run by rich greedy men who have a vested interest, but I wont be buying into the idiotic notion that the team that benefits most from their decisions (England in this case) are the cheating party.
I've seen the tackle by Balogan, I think its stinks that the suspension is overturned but the suggestion that the Yank team has somehow cheated is for the birds A little like your claim that England cheated in 1966. That team won it simply by beating everything in front of them. Your 60 years of bitterness will never change that,

First loss at the Azteca for Mexico in 13 years. Have 'merica ever won there?
Magnificent Bellingham and magnificent Pickford.

Henderson booked & injured in a game in which he played no part, must be some sort of record?

Jordan Henderson getting stretchered off after falling over the advertisement board.
The gormless twat managed to get himself booked from the sidelines as well

I can't see England losing to Norway. Tonight was the match more likely to be lost. Likelihood of an Argentina semi-final and France/Spain semi?
What a gormless twat Darren.
Get some zzzzzzz mate,

That was no good for the blood pressure!
Battling performance with smatterings of real class. Saka looks a shadow of what he can be when full of confidence but put kept it simple and put in a brilliant cross for the first goal.
Quansahs technique for the sending off was diabolical for what should have been a pretty routine sliding challenge.
Thought JP was trying to coax Jimenez into going the way he did for the penalty but then gave himself too much ground to make up. Glad hes getting so much support from the pundits for this game.
To go all the way is going to require a lot more 100% full blooded effort as the route is looking to be exceptionally difficult. This squad looks like it might have enough with the required mentality to make that happen.

Quansah:
Ooh I can't kick wi me weaker foot. I'll just tap it there. Ohh who are we playing? Are they in green? Ohh he bit that a bit ard, no need for that. I'll get me one back, take that! Who me ref, red card, what for? I'll go and stand next to J H, I like him.

I like how Tuchel looked all composed and calm, then a call went against late and he immediately went completely ballistic, arms waiving and dagger eyes.
Starting to like that guy.

Only watched the highlights.
Pleased they've won, and it looks like Pickford had a very good game.

The lifting of the ban is indicative of the corruption rife at FIFA.
I hope Belgium knock them out next round

I want the USA to beat Belgium and I want to see a bit of consistency with FIFA. I don't think the England player deserved to get a red card.
I know it's subjective but it won't be long before I totally give up on a game that has always been in my blood because the game has now been tampered with way too much.

Shouldn't we ask for Quansah's suspension to be suspended?

The World Cup is corrupt. Belgium will have no chance tonight. Trump and Infantino will see to that.

Well done England, I have to stop making predictions on football and stick to the horses.
I thought Mexico would win, having said that only because of the altitude which in fact didn't seem to bother England much.

Paul 57.
Yes the Harlech is still going, I pass it everyday on my way home from work.
How long for is anyone's guess but there always seems to be a few locals in there having a tipple.
One of our watering holes straight after every home games for many years.

America has given us a lot - the movie industry, rock nroll and the great American art- Jazz to name but a few. There are a lot of good and great people in America but unfortunately the current regime of Maga maniacs and their corrupt leader make me want Belgium to thrash them tonight. FIFA is again living up to its reputation as the most corrupt sporting body in the world by overturning the red card decision.

Cheers Andy -141 - good to know and may its doors be always open. From a young lad County Road was always the artery stretching from the church (we got the bus to the flyover when kids or train to Bank Hall) to the Oak. Best of luck to everyone in that community.

Relatively early on I wrote that I was enjoying most, if not all of the games due to the lack of VAR involvement, asking was this lack of involvement due to, in these early rounds, the fact that 'nobody' had any real vested interest in the results due because they were only early group games while all the recently added 'new teams' got absorbed into the mix during the neverending group stages.
Now we're getting to the meat of the competition and the also rans have run...nobody mention Germany, Holland and Brazil...we have bent Infantino, batshit Crazy Trump sorting the red cards and Lo and Behold VAR is popping up again on a regular basis like its Everton playing in every game...and something must be done about them.
Any hint of favouritism and Belgium should do a Senegal.

Under FIFA rules the US membership should be suspended due to Government interference.
