Dean Delaney joined Everton as a schoolboy in 1997, and went on to be a key
part of the successful 1998 FA Youth Cup Winning team.
By the end of the 1999-2000 season, the writing was on the wall for the
Youth Cup hero; he was released – just at the time when the members of a successful Youth
Cup side should be making the step up to the first team. But his way s
blocked by three other more senior players, and as the story so often goes,
he must leave in order to gain vital experience of first-team football at a
lower level in the league.
In June 2000, Delaney joined Port Vale. Delaney is also an Eire
Under 21 cap, and then spent four years at Port Vale after being released by
the Everton. He made sporadic first team appearances before getting a
chance to claim a regular spot when his rival for the jersey was injured.
However, despite playing 15 games for the first team, he was allowed to go
on loan for a month to Maccelsfield, and when his contract ran out, he was
not offered a new deal.
