Match Preview: Everton vs Manchester Utd

Everton host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday for their third game of the new season. 

Amid all the angst over the shambolic transfer window, it seems almost strange to be getting back to the game played on the pitch, but that's what we have lined up for Sunday afternoon.

The mood of Evertonians in the stadium could reflect the chaos and disappointment of the transfer window, and the seriously threadbare squad David Moyes has been left with. But with the 1878 Group having 'stood down' their efforts to show coordinated support for the team in the stadium, things may be a little muted. 

However, it is Manchester United who are coming to town, and we owe them one after they stole a win in their first visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

EVERTON TEAM NEWS

It's bad. Everton have only 17 senior outfield players fit to participate after the transfer window debacle saw a number of departures, although the only regular starter among them was fan favourite Iliman Ndiaye, who's imminent departure was no secret. At least David Moyes will now be fully justified in bulking up his bench by naming two goalkeepers.

Christian Nørgaard remains the one crocked player we have, whose prognosis remains mysteriously vague, with Moyes only confirming that he's going to be out of action for longer than anticipated.  

Barry is obviously the only choice to continue up front until Moyes is forced at some point to adopt a different attacking approach that might utilise some of the younger, speedier players he has at his disposal, if only for a short portion of the match after Barry has run out of steam. 

The only new player from the shambolic transfer deadline day transactions is Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who should get a start at right-back... unless he needs to be integrated into the small squad for a few weeks before he can be risked there. 

Of course, there is another 'new' player in Jack Grealish returning for another loan spell. Given the love affair with Moyes, he seems certain to start, leaving some glum faces amongst the other midfielders sitting on the bench... Maybe than can look forward to getting a short run-out during the final stages of the game?
