Born in Liverpool, Barlow was signed during Colin Harvey's managerial tenure from Sunday League outfit Sherwood Park at the relatively advanced age of 21.
Though he played almost 90 times for the Toffees over a five-year span and was part of the triumphant 1995 side that made its way to Wembley and won the FA Cup against all the odds under Joe Royle, he didn't ever fully convince as an Everton centre-forward. He was also injured for the semi-final game against Tottenham and wasn't selected to play in the final against Manchester United.
While he was a willing runner with plenty of pace, he struggled in front of goal and earned the nickame "Jigsaw" for his propensity to "fall to pieces in the box" when chances fell his way.
He was eventually sold to Oldham Athletic as Royle sought to rebuild the team following his successful first season in charge and went on to play for nine different clubs up and down the football pyramid.
His most successful years were spent at Boundary Park where he scored at a rate of a goal every three games and at Wigan where he notched 40 goals in 84 appearances before joining Tranmere where he played almost another 100 times.
After joining Bamber Bridge in 2007, Barlow eventually retired in 2009.
